Following the interest in the Oculus Rift virtual reality technology currently in development at Id Software, using the Doom 3: BFG Edition as a tech demo, John Carmack has revealed plans to fully integrate the $300 VR headset into Doom 4.

Speaking to The Verge in an interview
at QuakeCon 2012, Carmack said “I’m excited for once Doom 3
ships, and gets out there, I’ll put all this stuff into the Doom 4
platform.
It’s going to be a fully supported
feature on there, because I think I could justify — based on the
response that we got from our 8-year-old re-release title”

The Oculus Rift kickstarter has already
far exceeded its $250,000 target, having raised over $1.3m with 25
days to go. Patrons receive a free copy of Doom 3 with their Oculus
headset as an encouragement for developers to begin working with the
technology themselves.
