Randy Pitchford: “after consuming the narrative portion of Aliens: Colonial Marines, Alien 3 becomes a better movie.”

Gawd bless Randy Pitchford. He’s a bubble of enthusiasm and wonder. At E3, he’s busy promoting Aliens: Colonial Marines, Gearbox’s sequel to Aliens, made with 20th Century Fox’s blessing. He spoke to us at length on how their team are fixing and, in cases, continuity in the Aliens universe. And that includes welding together better the ending of Aliens and Alien 3.

“Colonial Marines is about scratching that itch we had after we saw Aliens,” says Randy. “We felt like there was some unfinished business. We saw Ripley’s fate. We know that the atmospheric processor blew. Bishop tells us that it’s 40 megatons. We know that the atmospheric processor is a crater and Hadley’s Hope is probably wrecked, so all those story threads got tidied up. But the derelict, with all the eggs, that’s still there.”
Randy and the team of Gearbox have been access to all the Alien universe creations, “to borrow from”, he says. “I’m not going to give away any spoilers, but there are some neat things about what we’re doing that are going to change the way we think about Aliens. But we’ve tried to be very careful – we’ve been trying to make more sense, and fit the pieces together nicely.”

Then he lays down the gauntlet. Here’s my bet with you: “after you consume the narrative part of Aliens: Colonial Marines, even Alien 3 becomes a better movie.”
