Battlefield 4 will be set in "modern day", dog bites man

Conjure up an image of Battlefield 4 in your - stop, before you'd even finished reading that sentence you'd imagined a shinier version of Battlefield 3, hadn't you? And now you're feeling a little disappointed that your tired imagination couldn't manage to dream up an amazing new Battlefield 4 set in space, or in a Mushroom Kingdom, or set in the darkest and most secret recesses of the human psyche. With videogames, anything is possible - so where might Battlefield 4 actually take us, given that it's been placed in the hands of one of the world's greatest development studios, whose tools and budget give them near infinite creative potential? Where indeed?

When asked about Battlefield 4's setting, DICE could scarcely contain their enthusiasm, spraying Joystiq's interviewer with flecks of creative spittle (we imagine). "We still want to stay in this genre, the modern day as it is," admitted DICE general manager Karl Magnus Troedsson. "We feel this is a place we can be and continue with the series. Battlefield 4 can live in this space and be very successful."

Battlefield 4 will be a modern day shooter then, much like the excellent Battlefield 3 and the excellent Battlefield 2 before it. Oh commercial reality, you win again.
