The Bureau: XCOM Declassified trailer intersperses in-game footage with god-knows-what

The Bureau: XCOM Declassified is out now; here’s our The Bureau: XCOM Declassified review.

Are you still excited to play The Bureau: XCOM Declassified, formerly known as XCOM, not to be confused with XCOM: Enemy Unknown, the remake of X-Com, known in the UK as UFO: Enemy Unknown? Or are you, understandably, a bit muddled on the whole thing?

Thankfully, this here’s a gameplay trailer, which means we can squint a bit, purposefully faux-click at the mouse, and try to imagine what it might be like to play the game.

Phew. gg everyone. gg.

While I was pushing furiously at what I imagined might be hotkeys and taking care not to hit the escape key (lest I ruin the illusion), I almost believed I was playing the permadeath Ghost Recon: Advanced Warfighter I’d very much like 2K Marin’s game to be. But our Steve, who’s actually had his hands on The Bureau, talks of “casually browsing” for cover in a mostly-linear shooter more reminiscent of Mass Effect 2 or 3.

I don’t know what to hope for. I only know that if you pre-order from the right shop you’ll receive the Codebreakers bonus mission, in which “a communications facility responsible for intercepting and interpreting the enemy’s transmissions has gone dark,” and your squad must make contact with any remaining personnel. Does that help?
