Call of Duty: Advanced Warfare gets all sci-fi at E3, but the DLC will still be old fashioned timed exclusives

Call of Duty: Advanced Warfare E3 trailer

Microsoft opened its E3 conference with a bang, some booms, a few jetpacks and Sledgehammer’s Call of Duty: Advanced Warfare.

Advanced Warfare continues the series’ tradition of impressive, large scale set pieces involving guns and lots of shouting men. Sledgehammer’s trailer has worked its way to the top of the pile though, because it’s got jetpacks and terrifying swarms of machines.

I always thought that those things were missing when I stormed the beaches of Normandy in Call of Duty 2.

While the future setting allowed for some interesting bits of kit, like different vision modes, drones and the aforementioned jetpacks, the trailer is otherwise what we’ve come to expect from the franchise. There’s shouting, screaming, a guy we’re meant to care about dying and a city in flames.

Unfortunately, Activision’s long-running series remains inextricably tied to Xbox, meaning that Xbox One owners get all DLC first, an announcement that received many cheers from drunk people in the audience.
