Diablo 3's Josh Mosqueria on launch failures, mistakes, and the road to redemption

Speaking at this year’s GDC, Diablo III game director Josh Mosqueira gave a post-mortem on the original Diablo III launch. In it, Mosqueira talked about how - even with estimate-smashing sale figures - the games initial design and systems, coupled with a disastrous launch, made for one of the “lowest point[s] for the team" during development. But nevertheless, the team pulled through.

“Even though we had the best of intentions, we know that we had let ourselves down, our teams down, and our players down." said Mosqueira. “But the really special thing about the Diablo team, is that instead of fracturing, or bickering and losing faith with one another, we rallied around and told each other ‘we can do this’. And that’s exactly what we did."

Blizzard to prevent permanent immunity in Diablo 3; gives them "more freedom in designing new and powerful items"

The application of Diablo III’s patch 2.2 on the PTR service has had an interesting side effect: enabling permanent player immunity with the use of some new legendaries. While attaining that status is an achievement - using the new Cooldown Reduction affix to bring ability cooldowns below their duration, Blizzard are tweaking some abilities to prevent this from happening; in fact this very outcome has been on their radar for a while now.

And in case you think this is an “anti-fun" move, the change will allow Blizzard to bring in some “new and powerful" items that can do the same, albeit in a more balanced manner.

Diablo 3 could be getting microtransactions in non-US areas

Update: It looks like Korea and Europe are safe, too. Forum posts on Battle.net show Blizzard denying that microtransactions will be implimented in the EU and the Korean/Taiwan server. It looks like the Asian markets are the main intended audience, specifically China.

Blizzard have spoken about some interesting features that may be discovered in Diablo 3’s 2.2.0 patch. Specifically, features that appear to allude to microtransactions. Before information is data mined and featured at the top of every forum web-wide, the developer decided to clarify what these features would mean.

Microtransactions are coming, it would appear. Just not in America.

Diablo 3 Season 2 will begin as early as Feburary; patch 2.1.2 still in public testing

Update: Season 2 has started! We've added all the new Season 2 items below for you to salivate over.

As Diablo’s first season comes to a close, Blizzard are keen to get started with the next. Season 2 will be coming as early as February 3rd, and with it comes a lot more than just a fresh start. Current seasonal characters will be transferred to the non-seasonal pool, and any items and paragon experience will also be carried over.

There’s also a new patch on the horizon, which is currently being tested on the Public Test Realm.

Diablo 3's got a new Lord of Terror: really bad lag

It’s hard to kill demons and gather up mountains of loot and gold when you’re faced with lots of horrible lag. Since the weekend, Diablo III players have been reporting “major lag" that renders the game unplayable, even in the single-player mode. And it looks like it’s not been restricted to just one region.

Blizzard is looking into it, and hasn’t ruled out some shady plan being carried out by minions of the Lord of Terror.

Diablo 3 week long community buff starts today; double Treasure Goblins for all

Diablo III has been enjoying the fruits of patch 2.1.2 this week - bringing with it Ancient Items, Greater Rift rebalances, and more. To celebrate the new features, as well as the conclusion of the first ever Season, Blizzard have seen fit to reward players with a week long buff, which causes their bountiful Treasure Goblins to spawn in pairs.

Diablo 3 patch 2.1.2 is now live. It adds Ancient Items, rebalances the Greater Rifts, and much more

Blizzard have proven themselves again to be one of the studios most dedicated to supporting their games post-release. Diablo 3’s 2.1.2 patch goes through each class and feature of the game with a tiny weighing scale to make sure everything is balanced.

Most exciting in 2.1.2 are the new ancient items that are even more powerful versions of some of the game’s best legendary gear. The Greater Rifts have been rebalanced, too, so now they are more fair and pay out more gold.

Diablo III 2.1.2 patch notes speak of even Greater Rifts and ancient items

In a world where angels and demons throttle each other on the regular, things don’t age in quite the same way. In Sanctuary, ancient items don’t pale and wane or dissolve on exposure to sunlight: they benefit from stats up to 30% better than their legendary equivalents.

Ancient rarity items are just one pillar of a characteristically far-reaching Diablo III patch announced at BlizzCon 2014 - and now taking shape in the public test realm.

Diablo 3 patch 2.1.2 introduces a new zone, ancient items and Greater Rift changes

Diablo 3 might not have seen some prime time in the opening ceremony, but that doesn’t mean Blizzard haven’t got anything to show for it. Patch 2.1.2 is already well into development, and brings with it a bunch of new features and additions.

A new zone is coming to rifts that’s a throwback to the The Ruins of Sesheron, the Barbarian homeland from Diablo 2: Lord of Destruction. There’ll also be a new rarity type: Ancient quality. These legendaries will be up to 30% better than their standard counterparts. With new Greater Rift changes, a new Rift Guardian, new items and more deadly enemies; there’s plenty to look forward to for Diablo 3.

Diablo 3 patch 2.1.1 arrives, bringing big changes for gamblers

Diablo III patch 2.1.1 is upon us, bringing with it a slew of changes including class and pet tweaks, bug fixes and an increase to the amount of crafting materials dropped by Rift Guardians in Adventure Mode.

Notably, the cost of gambling by spending Blood Shards at Kadala, the Horadrim merchant in Adventure Mode, has increased. But to balance this out, the chances of getting a legendary item from her have increased. Blizzard says it’s a quality of life improvement, though it’s been the cause of many threads popping up on the forums.

Our best Diablo 3 builds

I’ve been playing a lot of Diablo since Reaper of Souls released back in March. Having accumulated many shiny legendaries since then, I’ve put together my favourite builds for each of the six classes in Sanctuary. They’re all certified for the hardest difficulties Diablo has to offer and will work in both standard and hardcore.

Each build has a link to their skill calculator in the build name, as well as links to any key legendary items. All you need to do is go find them, which is the easy part… right?

Diablo 3's pets are getting buffed; to scale with players toughness

Diablo 3’s pet classes - mainly that of Witch Doctors - have been lamenting at their super squishy pets: especially so with Rift Guardians from Greater Rifts where it’s quite competitive. Thankfully however, game designer John Yang has previewed upcoming changes that will help pets survive, but only be as tough as the player themselves.

“Pets should be roughly as survivable as the player" said Yang. “Pets should take reduced damage on how avoidable the monster attack normally is for the player."

Patch 2.1 for Diablo III is nearly fully deployed, as the new Seasons game mode is launching in less than half an hour here in the EU. If you’re like me in that you sat there anxiously waiting for the floodgates to open, then I have some good news: PCGamesN has its own clan so you don’t have to go it alone, with both softcore and hardcore players.

If you’re looking for some companions to watch your back as you venture into the breech once again, here’s how to join.

Watch Blizzard explain the Diablo III ladder system new in Reaper of Souls 2.1

Diablo III is unprecedented, which is an odd thing to say about a sequel to anything. But it is: an action RPG with the post-release support of an MMO. That means it’s warped into a substantially better game since it was first, briefly finished two summers ago - and even now, after its wildly successful Reaper of Souls expansion, the game grows.

Over the course of a seven-minute video, Blizzard rummage through the new junk in Diablo III’s trunk.

Diablo III gains ladder-like Seasons system in Reaper of Souls 2.1

On the face of it, Diablo III is a cooperative game - but it’s always been played competitively, with one eye on the wider Blizzard community. This first major patch for Reaper of Souls will finally acknowledge that tendency in-game, with a Seasons system that starts players at the bottom, brigand-bothering rung of demon-hunting and compares their performance on leaderboards.

Diablo 3 patch 2.1.0: monster-slaying is always in season

Blizzard’s already teased quite a few details on the upcoming patch 2.1.0 for Diablo III. Just the other day the source of the Treasure Goblins was revealed, and back in June the developer gave a brief overview on the new features coming to Diablo.

But now it’s time to get into the nitty gritty of seasons, where new characters can compete with each other by gathering achievements like they were sweets, all in an attempt to get a coveted spot near the top of the ladder.
