The demise of streaming platform and Twitch competitor own3d will come in the next two weeks, says League of Legends streamer AdventSugar.
“Okay as far as urgent news goes,” said the streamer on Facebook, “Own3d will be shut down within the next 2 weeks.”
PCGamesN understands, via sources close to the matter, that own3d was close to a deal with LA based YouTube video service Machinima would buy the streaming service. The deal would allow Machinima and their content access to the lucrative streaming market, while own3d would receive continued funding to alleviate cash-flow problems. The deal collapsed as high profile streamers switched from own3d.tv to their rival, Twitch.TV.
AdventSugar streams on Athene’s channel, and isn’t the first own3der to speak out about the company’s dire financial situation. Last week, Steven ‘Destiny’ Bonnell admitted that missed payments left him barely able to afford food for his family after switching his stream to the service in 2012.
own3d CEO Oleg Kogut had reportedly told Bonnell in November that his company had received late payments from global partner CBSi, who in turn had reportedly been affected by Hurricane Sandy. Said Bonnell: “I don’t believe I will ever be paid for the last 5 months I streamed with them.”
Regular NaVi streamer PGG was recently spotted in a new feed on Twitch. The team had previously operated under an exclusive streaming deal with own3d. They’re joined at Twitch by other significant own3d signings, including PHant0mL0rd and Team Liquid’s Tranceh.
Popular Dota 2 streamer Singsing, says Tranceh, is in the process of tying up loose ends at own3d before making the jump to Twitch.
