EVE Online player loses ship with $1,500 of PLEX inside; not a single PLEX survives

Earlier this afternoon, an EVE Online player transporting 84 in-game time cards, known as PLEX, was gunned down outside of the main trading hub of Jita. With PLEX being slightly higher than the price of a subscription, the bounty of the cargo was an estimated $1,500.

Unfortunately for the pilot that claimed the bountiful kill, not a single PLEX survived the ships destruction - it was all vapourised. Ouch.

EVE Online Input Broadcasting and Input Multiplexing become permaban offences

CCP have clarified their position on players using multiple accounts, saying what is and isn’t allowed. You’re still allowed to run multiple subscriptions - even playing them at the same time with the help of multiboxing software - but automating actions, using Input Broadcasting & Input Multiplexing, have been banned.

Getting caught performing either within Eve can result in a permaban.

EVE Online's "This is EVE" trailer uses player voice comms to capture the MMO

A couple of months ago, CCP put out a call to EVE Online players, asking them to submit voice comms for a secret project. At the end of the keynote at EVE Down Under in Sydney, CCP revealed how they’d used the player’s voices and experiences.

EVE Online is a bit hard to describe, particularly in a trailer, but this is why CCP wanted the voice comms of fleets and players - to create a new trailer that shows off EVE in a way that professional voice overs or flashy cinematics alone can’t down. The end result is “This is EVE", and you can direct your eyes towards it below.

Assuming direct control: CCP is experimenting with manual controls for EVE Online

The very first time I played EVE Online, in 2004, I was immediately bamboozled by the controls. Not because they were obtuse - though they were - but because I expected to be able to control my ship just like I could in Freespace or countless other space and flight sims, which EVE Valkyrie now employs.

CCP has observed that this is a common experience among new players, who are surprised to find that EVE’s control scheme is more tactical and automated. This has led to the designers donning their lab coats and starting up an experiment: keyboard flight controls. An opt-in beta version will hit the MMO in the Rhea mini expansion, next month.

EVE Online's Phoebe update might make you change your travel plans

EVE Online’s fifth mini-expansion - which doesn’t sound all that mini - launched today. Phoebe’s arrival marks the halfway point in the first year of CCP’s new expansion model, where it will release 10 expansions annually.

Phoebe’s biggest changes affect travel and supply lines thanks to the introduction of jump fatigue. After making a jump, ships will need to wait for a timer before they can jump again, discouraging long-distance jump travel. It’s the first phase in CCP’s attempt to rejuvenate Nullsec.

Here's what's coming in EVE Online's Phoebe expansion, and beyond

CCP have just dumped a megaton of information about the new features in the upcoming EVE Online "Phoebe" expansion, as well as what’s to come as we head into 2015. Phoebe will introduce the long awaited “unlimited skill queue", allowing players to queue up year’s worth of skill training at a time. There’s also new exploration content aimed at rewarding skilled probers, and new tech II weapons - dubbed “glass cannon weapons" - that offer considerable firepower, but at a cost.

Meanwhile, CCP have big plans for December’s “Rhea" patch. A lot of it is top secret stuff, but CCP teased two new ships - the “TUG" freighter-sized ship hauler and Tech III Tactical Destroyers - with a slew of major model reworks.

EVE Online is altering the laws of physics to allow capital ships to fit through stargates

Big changes are coming to EVE Online in terms of long-distance travel. Moving between two distant points, particularly with jump drives and jump gates will take significantly longer. Why? Well CCP think the practical dimensions of New Eden have “shrunk considerably", all to the “detriment of the game".

Pilots will now accumulate “jump fatigue" every time they make a jump of any kind. This value persists over time and between play sessions. This will limit your ability to make rapid successive jumps in a short amount of time, especially over long distances. Also with this update, capital ships will gain the ability to use stargates, but they’ll still be unable to visit high-sec.

Green Man Gaming to give away Eve trials with pre-orders of Far Cry 4 and more

Green Man Gaming to give away Eve trials with pre-orders of Far Cry 4 and more

The other day, PCGamesN friends and digital distributors Green Man Gaming launched their Welcome Pack initiative. New sign-ups would yield free copies of Gun Monkeys and Sanctum, 30 days of Eve, and a decent discount to help fund further Steam key purchases.

Those of us with long-established accounts were in no position to benefit. But GMG have rectified that oversight by offering the same pack as an incentive to pre-purchase one of six PC games - Civ: Beyond Earth, Shadow of Mordor, Borderlands: The Pre-Sequel, Assassin’s Creed: Unity, Far Cry 4 or Alien: Isolation.

Green Man Gaming give away Gun Monkeys, Sanctum and an Eve trial with sign-ups

Gun Monkeys is an underappreciated side-scrolling simian disassembly simulator for two players. Sanctum is first-person tower defence from the people who latterly discovered the joys latent in goat physics. And our world, the so-called ‘real world’, exists only so that Eve Online can host its conventions without bloodshed.

Green Man Gaming is a digital distributor of PC games willing to acquaint you with all three - if only you’ll register an account under their Welcome Pack initiative.

Clarion Call 4 is an impressive player-made EVE Online propaganda film

EVE Online's players never fail to impress. CCP are caretakers - it's the players that drive everything, and that's never been more clear than when watching Rooks and Kings: Clarion Call 4.

It's a sprawling account of Rooks and Kings' development of a new - at the time - battle tactic: pipe bombing. Part historical documentary, part propaganda piece, it employs in-game battle footage from different perspectives, player comms and a slew of fan art and cinematics to tell the story.

Watch it, and then - if you haven’t already - reinstall the game.

CCP rework wormholes in Eve Online's third mini-expansion: Hyperion

The appeal of a wormhole is its mystery: what will you find when you come out of the other end, if you come out at all? But Eve players have had wormholes for yonks, and nowadays publish guides about the best wormholes to live in.

Yesterday’s Hyperion update is CCP’s attempt to inject a little of the unknown back into wormholes and their space game at large.

CCP producer wants to empower EVE Online players and bring in new ones

EVE Online has, since its inception, been a game where players are in control. While most MMOs are heavily scripted and players can only affect the world in fleeting, temporary ways, New Eden is filled with player driven stories and events.

But EVE’s new executive producer, Andie Nordgren - previously a technical producer - wants to empower players even more. In an interview with Polygon, she explained that she wants to give players even more of the universe, giving them more control and hopefully expanding the community.

Eve Online Crius expansion brings enough industrial change to yield "good-old fashioned space conflict"

Pew! Someone must have shot Eve Online’s next expansion with an Asteroids laser, because it’s split into ten smaller expando-rocks set to spin out across the next year. The first, Kronos, hurtled into one of the best PC space games last month. CCP’s radars indicate its follow-up is on a similar collision course. Named Crius, it’s due to make shockwaves in Eve’s industrial sector come July 22.

“As the fuel that powers the ‘infernal machine’ of harvesting, creation and destruction, the industry changes will catalyze player-driven action, create new opportunities for veterans and new players alike," write CCP. “And most likely start some good old-fashioned space conflict."
