Far Cry 4 has a lot of tools for destruction

The Far Cry series has always done guns better than the average shooter. It’s not just the selection, but the feel and mechanical love that goes into each one. They’ve all got lovely little notches cut out from years of use, solid kick-back, and a sense of presence that really sells the open-season experience.

Far Cry 4 doesn’t look like it’s bucking the trend anytime soon. This new trailer shows off some of the game’s guns and other death-dealers that will soon be available for hire.

Far Cry 4 trailer reintroduces Pagan Min with kidnapping, torture and an absurd chase sequence

I’m not especially interested in Far Cry 4’s dapper antagonist, Pagan Min, and wasn’t planning on posting this trailer that reintroduces him. Ubisoft makes more trailers than I can keep up with, anyway. But then I decided to watch it, and I changed my mind.

The tiger and elephant attacks certainly look like a good time, but they are topped by a high speed chase involving a quad bike, a plane and a wingsuit. Oh, and of course an explosion. Direct your eyes below for the turned up to 11 silliness.

Far Cry 4 trailer elephant is more like an angry tank than a majestic mammal

The elephant, nature’s shark: 14 metres long, its back ridged with razor sharp, poisonous spines, and armed with six tentacles, each strong enough to bend tungsten bars. It’s not difficult to see why Ubisoft included them in Far Cry 4 as your main enemy.

We too would face destruction in the face of the elephants if it weren’t for the work of the WWF and PETA (Pet Elephants are Traitorous Arseholes). Those wrestlers and activists have kept the elephants numbers down for decades.

In Ubisoft’s alternate history simulator we see a world where the elephant menace wasn’t kneecapped long ago.

The latest trailer profiles this monster.

Watch a man and his elephant go clay human shooting in Far Cry 4

There’s a feverishness to Far Cry that seems to seep from the games into the Ubisoft staff making them. Executive producer Dan Hay has been working on the series for three and a half years, and has finally reached the Heart of Darkness. Or should that be Far Cry 4’s Shangri-La?

“You get to this point in the game where you leave the dev behind and become the player," he intones.

“You can pick up a grapple, you can grab a piece of meat and you can basically become a hunter, and you can climb on top of an elephant, you can get on top of a mortar and you can nuke guys from above."

There’s a little of that madness in the footage below.

Meet Shangri-La: the mystical and fantastical land of Far Cry 4

If you thought Far Cry 4 was just more men with guns embroiled in a savage civil war, you’d only be half right. Outside of Krayt lies the majestic land of Shangri-La, but it’s a land that’s under captivity by an evil demonic force.

Here you’ll toss aside your boomsticks, instead opting for a more natural attire of dagger and bow. And with the help of powerful ancient guardians - notably that of an armoured white tiger - you’ll help cleanse Shangri-La one voodoo-like cultist at a time.

Far Cry 3’s islands were lovely, but most of the world was tropical forests and pristine beaches. In Far Cry 4, there are three distinct areas with their own challenges beyond chaps with guns.

Ubisoft’s been showing off the diverse locations at Gamescom, but you can get a glimpse of the killing grounds without going to Cologne.

Far Cry 4 trailer reveals elephants to be murderous monsters

If Far Cry 4’s soundtrack is anything like the one in the latest trailer, I’m pretty much sold. Yeah, murderous elephants and junkyard helicopters are cool, but they need catchy tunes.

Ubisoft’s showing off some new shenanigans from the explosive, open world romp, in between a bombardment of praise and hyperbole from E3. It looks like good times.

How to take over a Himalayan base using just one of Far Cry 4's elephants

Far Cry 4 might well be about false passports and terrible public transport and “tearing shit up", but it’s also still very much about stumbling into a fortress that isn’t yours and deading every last mother’s son inside.

The way you go about that is up to you. Two methods are on show in this playthrough: there’s your traditional stealth approach, which involves alternately offing very nearby and very far away enemies with knives and sniper rifles. And then there’s the elephant.

Every single second in Far Cry 4 is a story say Ubisoft

Far Cry 4 was recently revealed to be a thing, but other than a couple of box artwork shots we’d seen nothing of the game so far. Ubisoft broke that footage silence with their E3 conference opener, where they showed off the first five minutes of the game.

Lacking in any real ‘gameplay’, the cutscene was nonetheless remarkably pretty and filled with the series milestones we’ve come to love: armed checkpoint patrols, chunky shooters, and a deranged villain with superb hair.

Uplay jumps the gun and reveals Far Cry 4 Limited Edition details

Someone at Ubisoft his the big red button that says “DO NOT PRESS", because who wouldn’t? The result was the posting of Far Cry 4’s store page on Uplay. Whoops!

Thanks to the error, we now know a few details about the Himalayan adventure. You’re climbing around the mountains for your dear old dead mum, for example. My mum usually just asks me to fix her laptop, and that rarely involves fighting yetis or psychopaths, but it is still a bit stressful.

Far Cry 4's first trailer makes the case for returning hang-gliders without showing any UPDATE: it's also a fake

UPDATE: It's a fake - sorry, gang. Turns out the windswept peaks were nicked from a BBC Winter Olympics advert. Sigh.

Far Cry 4 was announced last week. Not because a nondescript Thursday evening is the most visible time to announce a game, because it isn’t. Nor because it was E3, because it wasn’t. But Ubisoft were about to ring their investors, and really wanted to tell them about how well Far Cry is doing.

This moment can be ours, though - Far Cry 4’s first trailer.

Cry Harder: Ubisoft announces Far Cry 4

Ubisoft have announced that their Montreal studio are working on a fourth Far Cry game, and that it will release later this year. As previously rumoured, Far Cry 4 will be set in a region of the Himalayas mountain range.

There will also be elephants, which should make Far Cry 3’s bears seem laughable in comparison. Elephants are rad.

Far Cry 4 really very likely to exist, with a little help from Ubisoft Shanghai

Shanghai by night. It’s raining. Everywhere’s a film noir set in January. A slender figure, framed against neon, runs as if pulled by his nose. He reaches the postbox, thrusts something inside, and slumps; assailants close over him like a venus fly trap.

Four days later, a dossier falls across my desk. From our man in China, it spills the beans on a Far Cry sequel. The case, it is blown wide open.

Oh, alright. It was a LinkedIn profile.
