Fraser and Matt have a little chat about Far Cry 4

Matt and I have been holidaying in Far Cry 4’s lovely Kyrat for the last week, and we return with enviable tans and only a few bullet wounds. It’s a dangerous place, so we got off lucky. But is it a destination we would recommend? Should you take your Christmas holidays there, or even bring the family? Far Cry does have co-op after all.

Read on, and enjoy the sort of enlightenment you can only get in Shagri-La.

Far Cry 4’s director given go-ahead by Ubisoft for a personal project

The last year has seen Ubisoft kick out some unusual games, from the absurdity-loving 80s homage Far Cry: Blood Dragon to the tear-inducing Valiant Hearts. They’re all personal labours of love for small teams, and it looks like the next unique project from Ubisoft may be coming from Far Cry 4’s creative director Alex Hutchinson.

Along with members from the Far Cry 4 and Assassin’s Creed 3 development team, Hutchinson has had a pitch for his game idea greenlit by some head honchos at Ubisoft.

Port Review - Far Cry 4

Far Cry 4 has been out for a couple of days now, so I’m taking a break from my sojourn in Kyrat, and my mounting body count, to condense my thoughts on how the game fares on PC. I’m still relatively early in the game’s narrative, but I’ve put Ubisoft Montreal’s hunting and killing sequel through its paces. And I’ve got good news.

While Assassin’s Creed Unity was inconsistent and has required a lot of post-launch attention from Ubisoft, Far Cry 4 is significantly more stable, with better performance on less beefy PCs. They recommended system requirements are the same as Unity's lowest. And it’s absolutely stunning, from the snow and mist-shrouded mountains to the verdant forests lousy with animals.

Far Cry 4 pirates accidentally reveal themselves to Ubisoft

Far Cry 4 has an FOV slider, which is lucky - an iffy aspect ratio can cause nausea and leave PC shooters completely unplayable. But the option was added in a launch day patch, and you know who doesn’t download launch day patches? A pirate.

Ne’er-do-wells hammered Ubisoft’s Twitter accounts complaining about the missing feature - an act tantamount to admitting in public that they hadn’t bought the game.

Far Cry 4's map editor won't allow you to make competitive multiplayer maps

Ubisoft’s had a hard time making friends, lately. News that Far Cry 4’s map editor would not support competitive multiplayer inspired a 17-page thread of anger on the official forums.

The lack of multiplayer map editing came to light on Twitch, when a streamer played a leaked copy of the game. Before this, Ubisoft had not mentioned its absence.

Swot up on Far Cry 4 with the 8 minute launch trailer

Far Cry 4 is out in less than a week, and just in case you missed the barrage of trailers detailing every single aspect of this rather large game, Ubisoft has put together yet another, teaching you everything you need to know about the open world shooter.

It’s eight minutes long, which is quite long for a trailer, but not very long for a class.

Far Cry 4 isn't getting a Blood Dragon spin-off, but don't count out another surprise expansion

Far Cry 3: Blood Dragon was a whole lot of stupid fun, a game where - just in the first 30 minutes - you punch a nuke, unleash dragons on enemies and stab, shot and fling shurikens at Daft Punk lookalikes. Ubisoft Montreal won’t be making a sequel.

Unfortunate, sure, but the reasons behind the decision make sense and are extremely unexpected for Ubisoft.

Far Cry 4 has a lot of tools for destruction

The Far Cry series has always done guns better than the average shooter. It’s not just the selection, but the feel and mechanical love that goes into each one. They’ve all got lovely little notches cut out from years of use, solid kick-back, and a sense of presence that really sells the open-season experience.

Far Cry 4 doesn’t look like it’s bucking the trend anytime soon. This new trailer shows off some of the game’s guns and other death-dealers that will soon be available for hire.

Far Cry 4 trailer reintroduces Pagan Min with kidnapping, torture and an absurd chase sequence

I’m not especially interested in Far Cry 4’s dapper antagonist, Pagan Min, and wasn’t planning on posting this trailer that reintroduces him. Ubisoft makes more trailers than I can keep up with, anyway. But then I decided to watch it, and I changed my mind.

The tiger and elephant attacks certainly look like a good time, but they are topped by a high speed chase involving a quad bike, a plane and a wingsuit. Oh, and of course an explosion. Direct your eyes below for the turned up to 11 silliness.

Far Cry 4 trailer elephant is more like an angry tank than a majestic mammal

The elephant, nature’s shark: 14 metres long, its back ridged with razor sharp, poisonous spines, and armed with six tentacles, each strong enough to bend tungsten bars. It’s not difficult to see why Ubisoft included them in Far Cry 4 as your main enemy.

We too would face destruction in the face of the elephants if it weren’t for the work of the WWF and PETA (Pet Elephants are Traitorous Arseholes). Those wrestlers and activists have kept the elephants numbers down for decades.

In Ubisoft’s alternate history simulator we see a world where the elephant menace wasn’t kneecapped long ago.

The latest trailer profiles this monster.

Watch a man and his elephant go clay human shooting in Far Cry 4

There’s a feverishness to Far Cry that seems to seep from the games into the Ubisoft staff making them. Executive producer Dan Hay has been working on the series for three and a half years, and has finally reached the Heart of Darkness. Or should that be Far Cry 4’s Shangri-La?

“You get to this point in the game where you leave the dev behind and become the player," he intones.

“You can pick up a grapple, you can grab a piece of meat and you can basically become a hunter, and you can climb on top of an elephant, you can get on top of a mortar and you can nuke guys from above."

There’s a little of that madness in the footage below.

Meet Shangri-La: the mystical and fantastical land of Far Cry 4

If you thought Far Cry 4 was just more men with guns embroiled in a savage civil war, you’d only be half right. Outside of Krayt lies the majestic land of Shangri-La, but it’s a land that’s under captivity by an evil demonic force.

Here you’ll toss aside your boomsticks, instead opting for a more natural attire of dagger and bow. And with the help of powerful ancient guardians - notably that of an armoured white tiger - you’ll help cleanse Shangri-La one voodoo-like cultist at a time.

Far Cry 3’s islands were lovely, but most of the world was tropical forests and pristine beaches. In Far Cry 4, there are three distinct areas with their own challenges beyond chaps with guns.

Ubisoft’s been showing off the diverse locations at Gamescom, but you can get a glimpse of the killing grounds without going to Cologne.

Far Cry 4 trailer reveals elephants to be murderous monsters

If Far Cry 4’s soundtrack is anything like the one in the latest trailer, I’m pretty much sold. Yeah, murderous elephants and junkyard helicopters are cool, but they need catchy tunes.

Ubisoft’s showing off some new shenanigans from the explosive, open world romp, in between a bombardment of praise and hyperbole from E3. It looks like good times.

How to take over a Himalayan base using just one of Far Cry 4's elephants

Far Cry 4 might well be about false passports and terrible public transport and “tearing shit up", but it’s also still very much about stumbling into a fortress that isn’t yours and deading every last mother’s son inside.

The way you go about that is up to you. Two methods are on show in this playthrough: there’s your traditional stealth approach, which involves alternately offing very nearby and very far away enemies with knives and sniper rifles. And then there’s the elephant.
