Na'Vi CEO goes back to school to explain recent drama

Na'Vi CEO goes back to school to explain recent dramaIt’s been a hectic couple of days for Na’Vi. Here’s a catchup: first ARS-ART leaves and is replaced by Funn1k from Team Empire. The very next day LighTofHeaveN, announces he is to go inactive, himself being replaced by none other than the captain of rival team Mousesports, KuroKy.

There are questions are behind each of these decisions; why did Na’Vi decide to replace their squad members? Did disagreements or bad blood factor in on the decision? Why Funn1k and KuroKy? And what can we learn about Na’Vi’s future?

All are answered by Alexander Kokhanovsky, CEO of Na’Vi, in this unusual video. Check it out after the break.

Na'Vi Dota 2 squad changes: ARS-ART and LightofHeavan have been replacedIt’s official: Sergey “ARS-ART" Revin has left the Na’Vi Dota 2 squad and has been replaced by Gleb “Funn1k" Lipatnikov from Team Empire. Meanwhile Dmitriy “LighTofHeaveN" Kupriyanov will take a some time off to be replaced by Kuro “KuroKy" Takhasomi from Mousesports. We knew of the changes a couple of days ago thanks to various tweets from Na’Vi CEO Alexander Kohanovsky. Rumours were in abundance over who was getting the axe and who Na’Vi might be picking up, resulting in some very educated analysis from some of Dota’s most prominent figures.

Dota 2 at Dreamhack - day two highlightsWhat a day for Dota 2 at Dreamhack. Every single best of three hasn’t gone beyond the second game. The teams at Dreamhack know how to capitalize perfectly on their first victory, sealing the deal in the second game. And while big names have been knocked out, the upstarts from No Tidehunter continue to blow our minds.

Dota 2 at Dreamhack Day One: Fresh blood take on the champions

Dreamhack Winter 2012 feels different to its summer counterpart. Major teams have vanished from the scene. Some weren’t able to stand being defeated at Valves International, while others just needed a break. Well known teams such as Na’Vi, Evil Geniuses, Absolute Legends and Team Dignitas are facing fresh blood from the likes of No Tidehunter, 4 Friends + Chrille, Out Of Tangos and We haz Asian.

It was a great start for the tournament, quelling most peoples fears of a one sided competition. Even if Na’Vi won all of their games, unsurprisingly, we have seen some great potential coming from the newer teams.

And everyone loves the underdogs, right?

How Na'Vi kept The International a global event

How Na'Vi kept The International a global eventOn Sunday, The International came to a close with a final that almost felt like an anti-climax; after so much drama, and so much upset, in the previous two games, it would have to do something pretty spectacular to keep the curve of excitement on the upwards. Ultimately, it was just two very good teams playing very good games of Dota 2.

‘Just’. Like it was boring. It wasn’t, in the slightest. Na’Vi and iG were on the top of their respective games, and when the style of play between the Ukrainians and the Chinese was so very different, it was a genuine pleasure watching them clash to see which was dominant.

The Dota International Grand Finals: Na'Vi vs iG

Comment
The Dota International Grand Finals: Na'Vi vs iGI couldn’t do it. I couldn’t stay up til 8am watching Dota. My mind was willing, but my body is weak and frail and far too pale to surrender sleep to the day. And so I’ve been relegated to watching replays, like some sort of plebeian. Regardless, this is it, the game that we’ve spent the last week looking forward to. The last year, really. Natus Vincere against Invictus Gaming.

And yes, that is a bit of deja vu you’re feeling. They’ve already played one another, and Na’Vi gave pulled out all the stops to show them exactly why you shouldn’t pick Naga Siren against them. A sublime Juggernaut ruined their day, and send iG down into the Loser’s Bracket, where they had to dispatch of DK, and then LGD, before getting another shot at last year’s Champions.

Watch the matches here. Or read the words. Read the words. They’re below.

The Dota International Semi-Finals: Pubstomp and The Big Upset

The Dota International Semi-Finals: Pubstomp and The Big UpsetYou’ve got a little time left. Just a little, before the finals start to emerge, these thrashing, unruly beasts that could go either way, in matchups that no one could really have predicted, a week ago. The International is wide open, and last night the Semi-Finals pretty much rewrote everything I thought was going to happen in this tournament.

And so, naturally, I headed straight for the pub before anything started. The Star of Kings, up near King’s Cross, was the host of the inaugural Pubstomp, a meeting of Dota fans cramming together in a single room in the upstairs of a London pub, with all the curtains closed and the heady musk of excited spectators hanging in the air. Dota 2 was projected on the screen, and after the Quarter Finals the day before, excitement was palpable.

The Dota International Quarter Finals: Na'Vi vs DK

Comment
The Dota International Quarter Finals: Na'Vi vs DKMy eyes drifted southwards, heavy with the knowledge of so many teamfights, burdened by the weight of so many ganks. The brilliant back and forth of EG vs iG. The utter devastation of LGD against Orange. The incredible prescience of Zenith’s Iceiceice with every Sunstrike against CoL. I had to sleep. I didn’t have 3am spectatorship inside me. It was just a game too many.

But I’ve now seen Na’Vi against DK. I’ve witnessed the games. I know who’s going through to the Semi-Finals, and who’s been relegated to the Loser’s Bracket. I know what this evening will look like, and I’m already fidgetting in my seat. It’s going to be big.

Normal rules apply. Watch the games here, or read my breakdown below.

The International Day Three: What to watch

Take a breath. No, it’s ok, you’ve got a moment. Like six hours, that’s more than enough to have a little break and maybe a nap. Relax into it, man. You deserve it. But seriously, you should probably sort yourself out because today’s the last day of the Preliminaries. Which means that there’s even more on the line for all the teams, to see if they can cause some upsets, dethrone iG and LGD from their seats of dominance, and surge into the Winner’s Bracket rather than being relegated to the Losers.

International Day 2 Standings: Global Upset

International Day 2 Standings: Global UpsetMan. MAN. Two days of International goodness, and I’m reeling. I’m staggering around my room mumbling ‘Black Hole Black Hole RIKI WHY DID THEY PICK RIKI Black Hole Black Hole’ and pawing at my screen in the hope it’ll produce more delicious competitive Dota goodness. There have been so many games. There have been so many upsets. And there’s still more. Thank goodness for that.

mTw take home the Dota 2 Vengeance trophy at Dreamhackmortal Teamwork have come away from this weekend’s Dreamhack with the Dota 2 Vengeance trophy after a three game marathon against Natus Vincere. Losing the first match, they managed to pull it back in the second to go on to win the third in an upset that’s unseated Na’Vi as the premier Dota 2 team in the world. This now sets the stage for them to meet again in the International this August, with a score to settle.
