Moscow 5 wins League of Legends Intel Extreme Masters at Gamescom

The Intel Extreme Masters took place in Cologne during last week’s Gamescom, with eight teams duking it out to see who’ll take home the big prize and also secure themselves a slot in the grand finals of the League of Legends Season 2 Championships, which have a prize pool of over 2 million dollars. Moscow 5 managed the feat, securing their dominance over the League of Legends competitive scene, and also protecting their IEM title, after winning it in Hanover last year.

League of Legends will be at Gamescom for IEM, stage shows, and probably cosplay

League of Legends will be at Gamescom for IEM, stage shows, and probably cosplayAlthough it’s hardly surprising with the Intel Extreme Masters tournament kicking off in Cologne, Riot have stated that they’re going to be headed to Gamescom, bringing with them hourly stage shows, Cosplay events and an entire booth dedicated to the game, down in Hall 8.

Previously events have had unique skins available to those who attend, with the likes of PAX Svir and Riot Singed being exclusive to attendees. I’m not saying there’s going to be something like that at Gamescom, but I’d be surprised if there weren’t at least a few perks for showing up in person to wave a friendly hand at the people who make and moderate such a ridiculously popular game. You’ll have to head on down to Cologne between the 16th and 19th of August to find out, though. You can’t find out from your bedroom. Because Gamescom isn’t in your bedroom.

Intel Extreme Masters kicks off at Gamescom with both Starcraft 2 and League of Legends tournaments

Intel Extreme Masters kicks off at Gamescom with both Starcraft 2 and League of Legends tournamentsThe opening few bouts of the seventh Intel Extreme Masters will be taking place in Cologne for this year’s Gamescom, before touring around Europe, stopping off in four different cities before ending up at CeBIT 2013 in Hanover in Germany. The tournament showcases both Starcraft 2 and League of Legends, and Intel is estimating that almost 2 million visitors are going to spectate the event live, while a further 20 million will watching on www.esl.tv. That’s a lot of people. Which kind of validates the $2.8 million they’ve put up over the previous six seasons.

The questions that start to fly around are why it’s just Starcraft 2 and LoL, when Esports is broadening at an alarming rate. Dota 2, Counter Strike, even fighting tournaments of Street Fighter or Tekken are becoming increasingly popular, and while SC2 and LoL bring in the heavy hitters, I’d be surprised if that’s all that shows up at IEM next year.
