Planetside 1 is going free-to-play

Since the announcement of Planetside 2 - then entitled Planetside Next; it’s nice to live in the future - SOE have kept relatively schtum on plans for the original Planetside. Yet the endless war goes on, its three factions slugging away at each other for all eternity until somebody turns out the lights.

But nobody is going to be turning out the lights on Auraxis MK1 any time soon, says SOE head John Smedley. Instead, Planetside 1 is going free to play.

Planetside 2 rate of fire is faster at higher FPS

Planetside 2 rate of fire is faster at higher FPS“It ain’t easy," sang David Bowie and, much later, The Sugababes. “It ain’t easy running humongous servers, each hosting hundreds of twitch-based firefights simultaneously." Just how complicated SOE’s endeavour was became very much evident to the Thin White Duke in the original Planetside, which saw damage calculated server-side in a manner closer to Morrowind than Battlefield.

Fast forward to Planetside 2, and the ongoing march of technology has seen those issues all but disappear. All but one, discovered by players in the last couple of days. But it’s a biggie.

Planetside 2 will be on Steam

Planetside 2 will be on SteamAs much as it might be tempting to lament the stranglehold that Steam has on PC gaming, it’s also for a few very good reasons; the community aspects, and the auto-patching are just a few, and when a highly anticipated MMO comes along, everyone who uses Steam is going to add it to their library anyway. Either way, the news that Planetside 2 is definitely coming to Steam, according to SOE President John Smedley, can only be a good thing.

Planetside 2 Beta imminent

Comment
Planetside 2 Beta imminentUpdate: The President of SOE, John Smedley, has tweeted that the Planetside Beta is going to be starting on Monday at 2pm, if everything goes to plan. That's sooner than sooner than soon. That's only a weekend away! It's time to start dusting off those bespoke driving gloves that make piloting a Galaxy such a joy. And make sure your hands still fit in them.

The Planetside 2 Beta, that holy grail of shooty bangs with many men on three different sides, is looking like it’s right around the corner, just a few formalities away from becoming a reality. John Smedley, the President of Sony Online Entertainment, stated that “Some bug to fix but tech test will begin in the next 2 days followed by beta (assuming all goes ok)." Which means that, Vanu willing, we’re going to be playing Planetside 2 Beta in some form or another in the next month or two.
