H1Z1 will be a massive sandbox, where you can farm, build a town or drive around hunting zombies

H1Z1, SOE’s post-apocalyptic MMO, was unofficially revealed yesterday when details emerged from the Game Talk Live podcast before it aired. What we knew was vague, though - there’d be forts, PvP, zombies and burning stuff down.

Now that the cat’s out of the bag, SOE head honcho John Smedley has taken to Reddit, providing a plethora of details about the upcoming MMO. It’s now sounding like less of a zombie MMO, and more of a humongous multiplayer survival game that just happens to also have zombies. Like DayZ, admittedly, but perhaps more ambitious.

Sony Online Entertainment’s newest title, H1Z1, is a post-apocalyptic MMO that’s lousy with the walking dead. SOE president John Smedley made the reveal on the Game Talk Live podcast, which goes live later today.

"H1Z1 is an MMO that allows players to take on the role of an apocalypse survivor who is in a world that is filled with zombies," Smedley said on the podcast. "A world! Not just a little tiny server."

Why every PC gamer should try Planetside 2

Why every PC gamer should try Planetside 2

Planetside 2 is like one big Michael Bay movie; a massively multiplayer first person shooter with explosions as far as the eye can see. It’s a brilliant mix of troop combat, vehicle warfare, and ridiculous aerial assaults. Sometimes you need to take a step back from the front lines and admire the carnage. Thank Auraxis, then, for YouTube.

Here’s what we think are the best videos to demonstrate why Planetside 2 is just so exciting. There’s glory, failure, rage, and bombers falling out fo the sky. And don’t forget: you can join in the action. Planetside 2 is free to join, and free to play. There's no reason not to try it.

Planetside 2 roadmap shows plans for the next six months of development

Planetside 2 roadmap shows plans for the next six months of developmentThe teething problems of an MMO can be many. The teething problems of a free-to-play MMO can often go unforgiven by its fledgling community, and once they’re gone it can be awhile till they come back, if ever. When the free-to-play MMO is Planetside 2, unique on the PC in its many-playered first-person shooteridge, all these problems are compounded.

SOE’s recently introduced roadmap should do wonders then to show which game problems the developer is aware of and in what order they plan on addressing them. Similarly it’s reassuring to see some of the new features we can look forward to.
