Make Something Unreal Live 2013: The Final Day - or Moly knows best

There were two ways it could go, really, bringing a man with Peter Molyneux’s reputation in to help judge Make Something Unreal. The Peter of the popular imagination would leave the final four teams scrambling for pens, I imagined, scrawling a torrent of new ideas on nearby desks, walls, faces. He’d swamp their polished, six-month genetics-themed demos with suggested new features - a real-time egg-hatching system there, a whispering genome there.

In reality, of course, he sat in studious attention as the exhausted students rattled through their final presentations, asking the odd question, before secreting himself in some corner of the hall to deliberate with today’s judges. As we waited, and waited, I heard one Epic staffer explain that we’d know the winners just as soon as the judges themselves knew, “like the Pope". And, eventually, we did.

Make Something Unreal contest winners announced

After months of development the winners of this year’s Make Something Unreal contest have been chosen by a panel of five judges - NVIDIA’s Phil Wright, UKIE CEO Jo Twist, T3 man Matt Hill, the Wellcome Trust's Iain Dodgeon and Epic's European territory manager Mike Gamble - with a little help from one Peter Molyneux.

First place went to the Quake-inspired Epigenesis, which Gamble described as a "potential eSport". Creators Dead Shark Triplepunch go on to receive a license to use Epic's Unreal Engine 4, allowing them to commercially produce games with the much-vaunted future-gen tecch.

Make Something Unreal Live 2013: Day 5 - or the science of stopping

What is finished? Nothing posted on this site is ever really finished. In the old days, a story was done when it hit the evening edition - cast in stone, for better or worse. Now that publishing is instant and changeable, there's always a new development to update you lot with; another mod to add to a list.

Today, the contestants of Make Something Unreal Live are deciding for themselves what finished means. In less than 24 hours' time, the four student teams will present their six-month genetics-themed prototypes to a panel of industry judges, and one team will be laurelled with a commercial Unreal Engine 4 license. All four teams are bright and ambitious. But how far is it safe for them to push their games before something breaks?

Make Something Unreal Live 2013: Day 2 - or how to get ahead with a good HUD

Something’s changed in the third-hand, convention-hall air at Gadget Show Live today. Yesterday, as the press wandered unhindered from stand to stand, Make Something Unreal’s four teams of student finalists were available for as many smiles and handshakes as needed. Today, it’s as if somebody left a people-tap on overnight. As Joe Public and all his mates fill up the National Exhibition Centre in Birmingham, a poor journalist has to fight for a spare minute with one of Epic’s chosen hopefuls. But fight I did, dear reader, for you. Here are my spoils.

Make Something Unreal Live 2013: Day 1 - Mendel’s Farm by Static Games

Epic Games’ annual UDK challenge is down to its final four teams of European students, all of whom would like to win a commercial Unreal Engine 4 license very much. Now they must iterate furiously on their genetics-themed prototypes in the runup to their final judging this Sunday. All aim to wear the code-crown previously donned by the nascent teams of Tripwire and Coffee Stain Studios, including Static Games - makers of warped management game Mendel’s Farm.

Meet the genetics experts consulting on Make Something Unreal 2013’s final fourThis year marks the many-th recurrence of Epic’s Make Something Unreal competition - the modding throwdown which once spawned Red Orchestra studio Tripwire. In December, a panel featuring games industry types and our Tim shaved a shortlist of 12 student prototypes down to four finalists, who will iterate on their creations in front of crowds of strangers at the Gadget Show Live in five weeks’ time. Development as performance!

You might recall that 2013’s theme centred around the fundaments of genetics and genomics - the Mendelian inheritance. No? Well, it did. The theme was set by biomedical research charity Wellcome Trust, who’ve also loaned out scientific mentors to each of the teams. More on them below.

Make Something Unreal Live 2013 finalists announcedEpic and co. have been whittlin’, whittlin’, whittlin’ away this week at the Make Something Unreal Live 2013 shortlist. So vigorously have they cut away student prototypes, in fact, that there’s only four left to compete in the Gadget Show Live final on April 2nd.

The shortlist of 12 games was judged by a panel made up of UKIE CEO Jo Twist, Fireteam CEO Stephen Gaffney, PCGamesN master and commander Tim Edwards and senior staff from Epic Games and biomedical research charity Wellcome Trust.

Make Something Unreal Live 2013 shortlist revealed; UK students dominate

For the last month, Epic have been whittling down entries to this year’s Make Something Unreal Live contest with the knife of game development experience and expertise. If you recall, entrants were tasked with pitching a game reflecting the theme of ‘Mendelian inheritance: genetics and genomics’.

170 European game dev students rose to the task, and 21 teams have now been chopped and diced to leave a shortlist of 12.
