My first night in SimCity: the wasted time, the good time, the giant fire-breathing lizard time

My first night in SimCity: the wasted time, the good time, the giant fire-breathing lizard time

I am torn between two reactions to SimCity. On the one hand, my experience last night wasn’t really all that bad. I saw the US servers were slammed, waited 40 minutes to try and get into one while I caught up on emails, and then gave up on the US servers and played on a western European server. I played for about three hours, and while I did have two momentary connection glitches, I was able to get right back to my game without any trouble and no lost progress. On balance, SimCity was only slightly inconvenient and quite nice to play. But what rankles is that it still shouldn’t be anywhere near as inconvenient as it is.

Centaur Warrunner first impressions

Comment
Centaur Warrunner first impressionsCentaur Warrunner is the most manly of all centaurs. Calling him a tank would be a true understatement. He can shrug off punishment and then turn it against foolish enemies. Even the most dangerous of heroes should be careful when going toe to toe against Centaur: it could spell their own doom. If your team needs someone to man the front lines and take a beating, Centaur is your man man/horse hybrid thing. Just don’t feel bad for him. He excels in being beaten up. Here's why.

Magnus first impressions

Comment
Magnus first impressionsMagnus is a gigantic magnoceros. He’s also the newest addition to Dota 2’s roster. With a passion for dominating team fights, whenever the enemy picks up Magnus, things get a little tense. I see “Magnus missing", I start to fear the fog of war. At any moment a huge, behemoth of death could be charging through the trees and give me a quick trip back to the fountain. Played correctly, Magnus could be the best initiator in the game. Here’s why.

Ezalor, Keeper of the Light, first impressions

Comment
Ezalor, Keeper of the Light, first impressionsAlong with Nyx Assassin and Visage, Valve have released Ezalor, Keeper of the Light, out into the wilds of Dota 2, to fend for himself and use his flashlight/staff to make the scary things go away. The good thing is he’s kind of good at it, and the bad things tend to start running the instant his staff starts glowing extra bright. The bad thing is he’s kind of weird. In a creepy old man way, sure, but also in the way his abilities work.

Nyx Assassin first impressions

Comment
Nyx Assassin first impressionsWe knew he’d been coming for a while. All the model additions and particle effects smuggled in with patches, and the sneaky additions in other hero’s splash arts, but perhaps we weren’t ready for him to sneak in with another two heroes at the same time. Either way, Nyx Assassin is now live on the Dota 2 servers, and he’s just as terrifying a ganker as we might have hoped. Perhaps more so.

Naga Siren first impressions

Comment
Naga Siren first impressionsNaga Siren is a lithe looking serpent with talents and abilities that can leave you speechless. I’ve seen team fights come back from the brink of failure, ganks be utterly negated and enemies who think they can run meet their inevitable death. Of course all of these things require extensive knowledge of how she works and items she absolutely must have. After playing a few games with her (spectating even more), here are my first impressions.

Templar Assassin first impressions

Comment
Templar Assassin first impressionsComing in a patch that's likely out tomorrow, Templar Assassin is the latest hero to be added to Dota 2, and she’s playable, right this very second, on the test server. Taking her for a quick spin against the bots, I’m coming away grinning like a loon. Sometimes a hero just clicks. Sometimes they’re the one for you. Sometimes they can deal lovely amounts of damage, place permanent wards wherever they like, and mince through creep waves in a matter of seconds, all the while harassing the hell out of your opponent. That last one is probably going to be a one-time-only sometime.

After a bit of reading and two games against bots, these are my first impressions of Templar Assassin.

EVE Online Inferno first impressions: New Eden is set to burn

EVE Online Inferno first impressions: New Eden is set to burnWar... War never changes. Except in EVE Online, where it tends to change with every new expansion. CCP's latest, Inferno, has just landed on Eve's only server. There’s a lot of new features to take in for the residents of the New Eden star cluster. Inferno follows up on last winter’s Crucible, which was the most beloved expansion released for EVE in a long time - in other words, it has a lot to live up to. It looks like it will do just fine.
