Secret Obsidian-made CryEngine MMO is called Armored Warfare; is more World of Tanks than Warcraft

If South Park: The Stick of Truth was a departure for Obsidian, with its 2D willy-bum comedy and turn-based JRPG combat system, then this is a defenestration: a tactical vehicular MMO that crushes dialogue trees beneath the tracks of “incredible, modern destructive machines".

Furrowed brows all round, then. But if you’re looking for an explanation, it’s probably worth remembering a fundamental part of Obsidian’s business: they’re contractors.

Crytek announce "royalty free" CryEngine "as-a-service" subscription to undercut Unreal 4

Blimey: engines haven’t changed so dramatically since ‘lectrics replaced steam locomotives. Just hours after Epic announced their monthly subscription for Unreal Engine 4, Crytek have revealed their own “engine-as-a-service" initiative for indies.

They’ve only gone and halved the price Epic are asking for, and all.

Arkane adopt CryEngine for their new thing

One of the consequences of not really understanding how game technology works is that we talk quite a lot about the feel of things. So it was last year that the PCGamesN chatroom became briefly preoccupied with Dishonored’s modified Unreal engine, and how it really felt like Source. Like Half-Life 2 - Episode 4 of which Arkane were once rumoured to be working on - Dishonored’s look was lean and economic. Its energy was spent in all the right places.

Hopefully Arkane will manage the same with their new adopted platform, the tech with all the tessellated toads, CryEngine.

Crytek reveals new CryEngine, doesn’t bother to number this one

Crytek have announced that they’re to release a fourth version of their CryEngine, but they’ve decided not to slap a number ‘4’ at the end of it. The studio have said that future iterations of the engine will simply be called ‘CryEngine’ without any of that bothersome numerical business. Watch it in action in a trailer right here.

Timesplitters mod given go-ahead by Crytek; “If I manage to get a group together, then they may let us use assets from the original TimeSplitters game!”Remember Timesplitters developers Free Radical? They were swallowed up along with the rights to their greatest success by Crytek three years ago, saved from financial ruin and rebirthed as Crytek UK. Since, they’ve worked on multiplayer for the Crysis series and on upcoming US invasion complex sim Homefront 2.

What they haven’t worked on is Timesplitters 4 - a fact of which series devotees are vocally aware. But Crytek have just okayed a CryEngine mod made by those same devos.

CryEngine SDK 3.4.3 update is free and comes with a change list as long as your arm and your leg and your other arm

Comment
CryEngine SDK 3.4.3 update is free and comes with a change list as long as your arm and your leg and your other armCrytek, like Epic and Valve, have been extremely good about releasing a version of their engine to be used by the community in any way they see fit. They've been less good about updating it though. The free version of the CryEngine has been sitting at the 3.4.0 release since April, just after they added DirectX 11 support. Well, Crytek are making up for that seven month abscence by releasing the 3.4.1, 3.4.2, and 3.4.3 updates all in one go and they fix a lot.
