Joe Danger and Joe Danger 2: The Movie coming to Steam with new features; "We can’t just do a quick and dirty port."

Hello Games! That’s the exclamation I begin every morning with, and also the name of the tiny Guildford studio behind ace loop-de-loop biking series Joe Danger. Cursèd console exclusivity means we’ve been forbidden from liking them for years. But now I’m sure we’ve going to be bosom friends, thanks to the announcement of two PC ports boasting new levels and enhanced graphics settings, as well as Steam Big Picture and Workshop support.

TF2 Steam Workshop sales “broke Paypal”; Gabe Newell explains

TF2 Steam Workshop sales “broke Paypal”; Gabe Newell explainsTen times as much TF2 content comes from its users - the hats, the guns and the brogues of the Steam Workshop - as comes from its creators. Such is its success that professional game developers make more selling TF2 gear than they do in their day jobs; that the Workshop moved beyond Paypal’s comprehension within two weeks of its launch.

Says Gabe Newell: “We’ll go up against Bungie, or Blizzard, or anybody, but we won’t try to compete with our own user base."

Left 4 Dead 2 Steam Workshop is go, hundreds of new campaigns await

Left 4 Dead 2 Steam Workshop is go, hundreds of new campaigns awaitClick! You’re playing a campaign through Zelda’s usually bloodless Kokiri forest. Click! Nick is now sporting a black goatee. Click! You’re mashed into the earth by a modified Tank.

That’s the idea, anyway. While Left 4 Dead 2’s Steam Workshop has crawled out of beta, it’s only been up and about for a day and is consequently a little bare. Assorted items, skins and some of the 1,000 existing community campaigns have already begun to trickle in, however, and Valve are confident we’ll see a steady stream flow through the Workshop’s doors in the coming days and weeks.

Play Civilization V on an Elder Scrolls map

Tamriel is uniformly about the second or third fictional realm to drift into the ambitious heads of prospective mod makers, just behind permanent mind’s-eye fixture Middle-earth. As such, just as there’s a Westeros in Minecraft, you can bet there’s an Elder Scrolls mod for Civilization V. As it happens, there are at least three good ones knocking about Steam's Workshop.

Red Orchestra 2 gets Steam Workshop support, new map and streamlined Countdown modeI can’t tell what colour the orchestra soundtracking the trailer below are, but they are very good, lending a contemporary Romantic feel to proceedings. But there’s scant romance to be found in Red Orchestra 2’s peculiar brand of long distance murder, as evidenced by goings-on in its new map - an update of Red Orchestra 1’s Barashka.

Indies can now make games using GameMaker and release them on Steam Workshop for freeSteam has started selling software as of yesterday, which is cool but of no direct consequence to PC gaming. Except, maybe it is. Amongst its first ranks is GameMaker: Studio, the all-over development tool used to build recent indie notables Spelunky and Gunpoint. Using GameMaker’s free version, indies will be able to develop and release games direct to Steam Workshop.

Steam Workshop added to Killing Floor, Red Orchestra to follow, both bundled, discounted this weekendTripwire Interactive have just updated Killing Floor with Steam Workshop support, which means and the grindhouse shooter is already filling up with new maps, mods, monsters, and other user-created horrors. Torchlight 2 developer hopes for Diablo 2 remake mod; how Runic is a "Steam-based company"

Torchlight 2 developer hopes for Diablo 2 remake mod; how Runic is a "Steam-based company"Torchlight 2 is a little bundle ARPG goodness that's heading our way later this week (huzzah!). One of the many reasons it promises to be excellent is that it's coming fully-equipped to support and encourage modding. What with the game's similarities to the Diablo games - a number of the development team worked on the series - it's unlikely to be long till there's a remake made in the Torchlight engine, at least that's what Runic's CEO hopes.

What effect does the Steam Workshop actually have on concurrent player numbers?

Comment
What effect does the Steam Workshop actually have on concurrent player numbers? We always take it as read that mods are good for PC gaming - that giving the gaming community tools to create new content for their favourite game should extend the life of that game. The problem with mods previously is that distribution and installation of the final content was a hard problem - one that Steam’s Workshop has made a good stab of fixing. Now, installing a mod is as easy as clicking a link.

I wanted to investigate what effect the Steam Workshop is having on the games that have adopted it. To do so, I’ve used SteamGraph to track player numbers over the past year for most of the Steam Workshop games. The only game that isn't included is Naval War: Arctic Warfare, as there too few players online for it to be tracked.

The hypothesis is, surely, that Steam Workshop will bring more players into your game, and keep them playing for longer. Is that true?
