Dota 2 update adds solo matchmaking and all the custom UI's

Another week, another patch. Valve are starting to make preparations for the biggest Dota 2 tournament ever, with The International prize purse getting even fatter. A new Interactive Compendium has already added another $200,000 to the 1.6 million dollar prize pool. In this week’s update, Valve have added a new solo matchmaking option. The new queue will only be populated by solo players; cutting out the chance of going head to head against pre made teams. Also in the update: a huge amount of unreleased custom UI’s that have been unearthed in the files.

mTw clears its Dota 2 roster, only syndereN remainsAfter a disappointing showing during the International a few weeks ago where they didn’t manage to make it past the first stage of the tournament, mTw has decided to clear the roster of its Dota 2 team, leaving behind only SyndereN, the captain. There’s an official statement on the team’s page, but it seems like that’s only half the story.

iG celebrate their Dota 2 International win with a massive party thrown by their billionaire ownerWang Sicong, owner of Invictus Gaming and son of the 11th richest man in China, Wang Jianlin, is more than a little pleased with his team winning this year’s International, and decided to throw them a party in celebration. And when you’re the son of the 11th richest man in China, that means you’re going to make it a proper party. With balloons and probably even a clown.

How Na'Vi kept The International a global event

Comment
How Na'Vi kept The International a global eventOn Sunday, The International came to a close with a final that almost felt like an anti-climax; after so much drama, and so much upset, in the previous two games, it would have to do something pretty spectacular to keep the curve of excitement on the upwards. Ultimately, it was just two very good teams playing very good games of Dota 2.

‘Just’. Like it was boring. It wasn’t, in the slightest. Na’Vi and iG were on the top of their respective games, and when the style of play between the Ukrainians and the Chinese was so very different, it was a genuine pleasure watching them clash to see which was dominant.

The Dota International Grand Finals: Na'Vi vs iG

Comment
The Dota International Grand Finals: Na'Vi vs iGI couldn’t do it. I couldn’t stay up til 8am watching Dota. My mind was willing, but my body is weak and frail and far too pale to surrender sleep to the day. And so I’ve been relegated to watching replays, like some sort of plebeian. Regardless, this is it, the game that we’ve spent the last week looking forward to. The last year, really. Natus Vincere against Invictus Gaming.

And yes, that is a bit of deja vu you’re feeling. They’ve already played one another, and Na’Vi gave pulled out all the stops to show them exactly why you shouldn’t pick Naga Siren against them. A sublime Juggernaut ruined their day, and send iG down into the Loser’s Bracket, where they had to dispatch of DK, and then LGD, before getting another shot at last year’s Champions.

Watch the matches here. Or read the words. Read the words. They’re below.

The Dota International Finals: iG vs LGD

Comment
The Dota International Finals: iG vs LGDAfter that game against Na’Vi, you can’t help but feel a little sorry for LGD. Not only did they have to slog it out with one of the best over three matches, now they’ve got to slog it out with another of the best, over another three matches, and win. And even if they do that, they’ve got another five matches to play against Na’Vi. Again. It’s enough to make you feel tired. Actually it’s 3am, so I feel pretty shattered right now anyway.

Either way, this is the Loser’s Bracket final, and it looks like the final we all predicted. iG and LGD, the two champions of the group stage, going toe to toe to find out who’s the best China has to offer, to go up against Na’Vi in the Grand Final.

Watch it here. Or don’t, and just read my words below. They were written for you, after all.

The Dota International Finals: Na'Vi vs LGD

Comment
The Dota International Finals: Na'Vi vs LGDHere we go, the main event, the big kabosh, the rumble in the jungle, and the lanes, and in that bit of water around Roshan. This is the final day of the Interantional 2012, where we will find out, once and for all, who the best Dota 2 team in the world is. Until next year when we’ll find out all over again. Things kicked off with iG vs DK to decide who’ll be heading into the Loser’s Bracket final, with iG losing the first game, before coming back with two solid victories to secure them the place.

Which brings us to the Winner’s Bracket final, and LGD vs Na’Vi, the strongest team of this International against the strongest team of last year’s. LGD have still not lost a game, and while Na’Vi went against everyone’s common sense and actually came away with a win against iG, they’d at least lost two games beforehand. They were shown to be fallible. LGD, on the other hand, seemed as untouchable as a Phantom Assassin with Butterfly and a BKB.

Details after the jump, so watch the replays here if you haven’t seen them, or carry on reading. Just don’t complain if I spoil the winner for you, because you’ve been warned.

The Dota International Semi-Finals: Pubstomp and The Big Upset

The Dota International Semi-Finals: Pubstomp and The Big UpsetYou’ve got a little time left. Just a little, before the finals start to emerge, these thrashing, unruly beasts that could go either way, in matchups that no one could really have predicted, a week ago. The International is wide open, and last night the Semi-Finals pretty much rewrote everything I thought was going to happen in this tournament.

And so, naturally, I headed straight for the pub before anything started. The Star of Kings, up near King’s Cross, was the host of the inaugural Pubstomp, a meeting of Dota fans cramming together in a single room in the upstairs of a London pub, with all the curtains closed and the heady musk of excited spectators hanging in the air. Dota 2 was projected on the screen, and after the Quarter Finals the day before, excitement was palpable.

The Dota International Quarter Finals: Na'Vi vs DK

Comment
The Dota International Quarter Finals: Na'Vi vs DKMy eyes drifted southwards, heavy with the knowledge of so many teamfights, burdened by the weight of so many ganks. The brilliant back and forth of EG vs iG. The utter devastation of LGD against Orange. The incredible prescience of Zenith’s Iceiceice with every Sunstrike against CoL. I had to sleep. I didn’t have 3am spectatorship inside me. It was just a game too many.

But I’ve now seen Na’Vi against DK. I’ve witnessed the games. I know who’s going through to the Semi-Finals, and who’s been relegated to the Loser’s Bracket. I know what this evening will look like, and I’m already fidgetting in my seat. It’s going to be big.

Normal rules apply. Watch the games here, or read my breakdown below.

The Dota International Quarter Finals: iG vs EGSecond only to LGD in terms of the sheer strength of their lineup and their performance so far, Invictus Gaming came out of Group B with a single loss to their name, and thirteen lovely wins. Evil Geniuses, on the other hand, weren’t quite so indomitable, instead emerging out of Group A with a respectable eight wins to six losses.

But they came up against one another in the third quarter final of the International. You can watch it here, or dive below the jump for our very own words.

The Dota International Quarter Finals: Zenith vs CoL

Comment
The Dota International Quarter Finals: Zenith vs CoLWe’re onto the second match, slotting Zenith, second place in Group A, against Complexity Gaming, who did awfully well in Group B. While both teams have had some losses (only LGD have a lovely unbeaten streak), they have both performed above the curve. America’s Complexity was on the Radiant side, where Zenith creeped into the Dire.

The results are below, so do the right thing and watch the replays if you want to keep it secret. Otherwise click below for a blow by gank account of everything that happened.

The Dota International Quarter Finals: LGD vs Orange

Comment
The Dota International Quarter Finals: LGD vs OrangeWe’ve been through the preliminaries, coming out of the other end bleary eyed, tired, shivering just a little bit and wondering what it all means, whether warding really is all that important and if anything can stop China from becoming the most powerful Dota force known to man. After a two day break, the International is back, and it’s kicked off in just about the biggest way possible, with LGD, the unbeaten champions of Group A, going up against Orange, one of Group B’s stronger teams.

If you’d rather not find out who won, don’t click on that big shiny link underneath these words. Because I’m going to tell you. Don’t do it, man.

And while he’s there, he’s only gone and snapped some shots of what look like upcoming Dota 2 trading cards. As if I didn’t spend enough time looking at my Dota backpack and sighing forlornly already.
