World of Tanks' average players spend three times as much as League of Legends players

Numbers, eh? Can’t live with ‘em - the angular limbs of ‘4’ and ‘7’ in particular would make bedtime a nightmare. But they can be absolutely fascinating. Take, for instance, the average revenue per user in the PC’s top free-to-play games. Can you guess how much people tend to spend in Dota 2, compared to LoL? Or in TF2 compared to Planetside?

Heroes of Newerth has a new motherflipping announcer. It’s motherflipping Samuel L motherflipping Jackson, motherflipper

S2 are putting money in all the right parts of development when it comes to Heroes of Newerth. They’re releasing new champions, working on optimisation and balance patches to keep the game fresh for players, and they’ve hired Samuel L Jackson.

Yes, motherflipping Samuel L Jackson.

(I want this motherflipping post to contain the most near-profanity of any sitting post on bucking PCGamesN, bawlsack.)

Heroes of Newerth head thinks RTS and MOBA "need to co-exist"

Mark DeForest is CEO of S2 Games, and plays their Heroes of Newerth at the expense of pretty much anything else. In fact, he’s spent the majority of the weekend just prior to our chat doing just that - slaughtering his unsuspecting customers in all three lanes over two-score matches.

He used to be just as dedicated to the RTS, though, so I have to ask: what does he think of where the genre is now, if it’s anywhere at all?

“Is it dead?", he replies. There’s a pause. “I’d never want to come off as a sour individual, or being salty about something, because negativity breeds negativity and I certainly don’t want to make other people negative by reading potential comments in the story.

“But I’ll say this - I’m really disappointed about where RTS went."

Heroes of Newerth's art director on breaking the MOBA's porny streak in Strife: "It’s something we've been really careful of"

We write a lot about League of Legends on this site, and I often find myself choosing the third or fourth potential header image to attach to a post. Some days, it seems I’m more likely to come face-to-screen with an anthropomorphic sex kitten or come-hither tree nymph than not. It’s a pervasive problem with the genre - and so when I talked to Heroes of Newerth’s art director Jesse Hayes, I asked whether S2 thought about how female characters were presented when working on art and animation for their new MOBA, Strife.

S2 eSports head on WCS and International clash: "We need to all work together"

Sam Braithwaite is three things: head of eSports at S2 Games, Heroes of Newerth pro, and non-stop consumer of all things electronic and competitive.

“When I first heard about the conflict between the International and the WCS, I was a little bit disappointed," he told PCGN. “Could they have done something about it? Probably. But at the end of the day, there is so much going on."

In fact, as the eSports goings on continue going on, Braithwaite predicts that developers will have to begin collaborating to produce a mutually-beneficial, clash-free global event calendar.

Introducing Strife: How S2's Heroes of Newerth follow-up intends to save the MOBA from itself

If League of Legends is Blu-Ray, then Heroes of Newerth is HD-DVD. Once, one couldn’t be mentioned without reference to the other. But today, in the comment threads where the relative merits of LoL and Valve’s Dota 2 are picked over at length, HoN is rarely mentioned at all.

S2 Games ultimately lost the race for Dota’s audience. But by any other yardstick, Heroes of Newerth is a success that needs no qualification.

Why Riot think Dota Bloodseeker's ultimate is ultimately a bad idea

You’ll know Bloodseeker, even if you think you don’t - it’s his ugly mug Valve use to promote Dota 2. Big bloke, awful teeth; imagine the Mouth of Sauron packed in the day job and turned quarterback.

Like all Dota heroes, Bloodseeker has an ultimate. His is Rupture - a ranged attack that splits open its target’s skin, causing massive damage if they try to move. It’s popular - but League of Legends developers Riot have no plans to implement it, or anything like it, in their game. Here’s why.

Heroes of Newerth accounts hacked, passwords breached; “I guess I’ll do LoL next”, boasts hackerS2 Games revealed that runner-up MOBA Heroes of Newerth was hacked early yesterday morning. The developers have reset all passwords, and strongly recommend players do the same for any and all accounts that might share details with HoN. What's more, if you changed your password on Monday before 3pm EST / 8pm GMT, you’ll need to change it again as a precaution.

“Disregard any out-of-game sources of information at this time," said S2 when the news broke. There’s one source we’re going to make an exception for, though. The hacker has conducted a Reddit AMA, and plans to hack HoN’s servers again on Christmas Day.

Riot squash rumours of Season Three team exclusivity demand: “We believe our initiative and investment in eSports will help every competitive game.”

In the last few days, Riot Games have been accused of pushing teams to pick between League of Legends, Dota 2 and Heroes of Newerth; both Dignitas manager Odee and Riot themselves denied the rumours. Now Riot have sought to end what they describe as “a big miscommunication between Riot and a few teams".

“We are not requiring team organizations to be exclusive to League of Legends, period," said the developer.

League of Legends to get ARAM Mode in next patch

League of Legends to get ARAM Mode in next patchThose of you familiar with Heroes of Newerth might also be familiar with ‘ARAM’, a player encouraged game mode that turns out to be quite a lot of fun. It stands for ‘All Random, All Mid’, and features everyone on the team, err, going random, and then going mid. It’s not really all that complicated. But it is an awful lot of fun. And it's coming to League of Legends.

Is it worth paying for the Dota 2 early access bundle?

One hundred and sixty five pieces of equipment. Twenty nine bundles. Eight tools. Six couriers. That’s Dota 2’s store, right now. It’s quite an impressive haul, especially when you consider that the majority of all the items you can slap onto your favourite heroes right now are community made. But there’s one item that’s very much Valve’s own, and very much Important with that capital I. Because it’s you that needs to pay attention to the fact that, right now, you can buy Dota 2, and play it.
