It was precisely a month ago today that Bethesda released a new trailer, a chance to rub our eyes wetly across the white/brown wastes of Solstheim - the island destination of Skybox’s first major add-on. That one, longing look might have to last us for a while yet though - Bethesda tell us we won’t be seeing Dragonborn on PC until the new year.
At the time of writing, it looks like Dragonborn is the closest thing Skyrim’s going to get to a full, 15 lb expansion pack. No $5 crackling this; the next chunk of DLC will include new Shouts and spells, new weapon and armour types, new enemy types, and of course the new realm itself - Solstheim.
What’s that? Somebody said you were the dovahkiin? Oh man, this is awkward. I was a dovahkiin too. Me, Bethesda community manager Nick Breckon’s mum, and enough dragonborn to fill the maternity wards with tiny Nordic heroes. All dovahkiin. And then there was this guy with the nutcracker face, though I don’t remember him being there at the time. He’s the star of the new Skyrim DLC.
It’s possible you haven’t been keeping track of every name Bethesda’s two-noun fantasy moniker generator spits out, so let’s get you up to speed. For Hearthfire - Skyrim’s second DLC pack to date - think Fable 2 domesticity. We’ve got land-buying, cottaging, er, cottages, stables, gardening, and absent parenting.

Skyrim’s first official piece of DLC, Dawnguard, is out today on Xbox but we'll have to wait until July 26th to play it. But whatever Bethesda do officially, they face stiff competition; from their own players. The Steam Workshop currently hosts nearly 2000 mods; while the Skyrim Nexus carries a staggering 13,000.
With all that, what exactly can Dawnguard offer that we can’t already get from the banquet of free morsels that have been laid on in front of us, to pick and choose between?
The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim - Dawnguard (Dawnie to her friends) looks like a deliciously evil chunk of DLC, asking the player to choose between the fight between good and evil: be a vampire, or be part of the people that fight those twinkling, bitey jerks. We have a gallery of screen for you, but you must promise to only look at them after dark, or the vampy shots will complain.
Skyrim Dawnguard has been announced as the first piece of Skyrim DLC. We've taken a quick look at the rumours swirling around about it, analysed the trailer and what might be in it. It will probably involve a grumpy looking man in a hat. But there's much more to it than that...
