Win an EVE Source book by spinning us a yarn

The EVE universe is pretty big. Sure, a lot of it is nearly empty space filled only with floating space debris and mineral rich asteroids, but that black void is punctuated with thriving worlds, gargantuan space stations and swarms of ships going about their business like faster than light insects.

So the EVE Source book, which covers the history and lore of the universe with art and new information regarding the various factions and worlds is also pretty big. A 200 page tome, in fact. And we’ve got one to give away to our European readers. It’s weighing down our coffee table, so you’d be doing us a favour. Find out how you can get your grubby mitts on it below.

Become a recruitment mercenary with the EVE Online Recall Program

Space can be a lonely place: it’s big, most of it is empty of things larger than a particle and no one can hear you scream. If you’re an EVE Online player, and you lost a beloved wingman whose witty banter you miss, or you long for the days when you used to play games of cat and mouse with a wiley nemesis, you can now bribe them back into the game.

CCP has set up a Recall Program, allowing pilots, tycoons, miners and CEOs to send invites to a lapsed players, giving them seven days of free game time, potentially netting themselves rewards in the process.

Ship makeover: Paint your ships in EVE Online come March 11th

So you’ve saved up for a new battleship in EVE Online, and you’re eager to start blasting stuff into space dust, but there’s one problem: your battleship looks a little boring. How are you meant to strike fear into the hearts of your enemies if you can’t paint it hot pink?

CCP are aware that this is a concern, and to give pilots more creative control, the developer is kicking off a ship painting pilot program. Yes, you are one step closer to your rainbow monstrosity.

CCP to celebrate 10 years of Fanfest at Fanfest 2014, May 1st - May 3rd

CCP’s annual celebration of the EVE franchise, which now includes EVE Online, Dust 514 and EVE Valkyrie, and its players is going to be a pretty massive one, this year.

It’s the tenth anniversary of EVE Fanfest, taking place in Reykjavik, Iceland from May 1st until May 3rd. It’s going to be marked by the unveiling of a 16-foot monument with the name of every player’s main character etched into the stone.

Making EVE Online better than reality

Making EVE Online better than reality

“EVE is real," CCP’s Hilmar Petursson boldly stated at DICE last week in his presentation, “The Human Brain is the Platform: Gaming in the Golden Age". And he didn’t mean real in the way that every piece of media is real, that they exist. He was referencing the goal that CCP set themselves in 2008: create virtual worlds more meaningful than real life.

With countless wars, riots, political maneuvering and the millions of dollars worth of property damage that have taken place in EVE, he thinks they are on the path to achieving that.

EVE players to get a 16 foot erection (in their honour)

If you're playing EVE, there's a good chance that the name of your main character is going to be immortalised in Reykjavik, Iceland. CCP is constructing a 16ft-tall behemoth in its hometown to honour the players who have joined them on their decade long journey through space.

All active EVE players as of March 1st will have the name of their main character etched in stone, which is absolutely going to freak archaeologists out when they discover it a thousand years from now. "They named their children things like Bigbootypirateman?"

Watch the changing fortunes of Eve Online's corporate empires

The war within New Eden has been raging for a decade. Massive corporations go head to head over vast expanses of territory and assets. Some just like a good fight. Only this week, trillions of ISK were laid on the line after a corporation owner forgot to pay the rent. With 2013 now behind us, we can take a look into the very front lines of those skirmishes in a very pretty fashion. A video of last years battles has been stitched together into a beautiful time lapse, and you gotta see it.

Memoirs of an Eve alliance commander: Test veteran talks space diplomacy and The Mittani

In 2010, Leodavinci joined the fledgling Dreddit corporation, founded in Eve Online by users on an /r/gaming thread. By 2012, he was head diplomat and occasional leader of Test Alliance Please Ignore, then the largest alliance in the game.

“The best way to describe running an Eve alliance is like being a CEO of a major multinational company," he told users in a Reddit AMA. “Except nobody gets paid but a shit ton of work still has to get done."

Eve Online's largest ever battle is underway - because one corp forgot to pay their rent

More than 2,200 players are fighting a battle that dwarfs all previous contenders for the largest skirmish in Eve history. Hundreds of thousands of dollars are estimated to have been lost in destroyed ships since yesterday afternoon - and the back-and-forth is expected to continue for several hours yet.

The conflict began by accident, when one corporation failed to pay their station rent - and an entire sector promptly unravelled around them.

Macabre map shows real-time kills in EVE Online

For all of EVE's player-run economic and poltical systems, it's also a gargantuan battlefield, where ships are blasting each other into space debris every where at any time. It's a dangerous universe out there, and this 3D map revels in all of these deaths.

The zKillboard map highlights all the conflict areas, split into New Eden, Wormholes, Nul, Lowsec and Highsec along with revealing the players involved, linking you to their zKillboard page. There's a lot of killing going on right now, which makes me glad I'm in the safety of my flat instead of a ship.

Motion sickness isn't a problem in Eve Valkyrie, say CCP: "It works out super nicely"

CCP CEO Hilmar Pétursson lives and works in Iceland. Eve Valkyrie, his studio’s latest project, is in the works in Newcastle. That doesn’t necessarily make him the best person to tell you about the day-to-day twists and turns of development - but he is distant enough to judge the effects of its 3D virtual reality for nausea. And he’s confident that the dogfighting spectacular won’t need to be bundled with a wastepaper basket on release.

The Yule Lads come to EVE Online bearing gifts

Everyone's always going on about this Santa fellow at this time of year, but let's face it, the old chap's become a bit passe. In EVE Online, its the Yule Lads, with names like Pot-Licker and Door-Slammer, sons of a naughty child-devouring troll, who give out gifts (while also stealing milk and licking pots).

Just log into EVE, open a door on your advent calander, and grab your lovely present from these dirty Yule Lad scamps. And what better way to celebrate Christmas with some new guns - far superior to socks. Learn more about these Icelandic ne'er-do-wells and their intergalactic war against Santa below.

Eve orbital strike integration was "cautious"; CCP strengthen Dust 514 connection

“Orrrrbital STRIKE!", the missing arena announcer doesn’t boom whenever one of Eve’s pilots pokes a fiery finger into Dust 514’s snowglobe. We can only presume CCP are still in search of Street Fighter’s disembodied voice, which wisps about the world on the wind between games.

In the meantime, the developers will continue to fiddle with how their free-to-play PS3 shooter connects with the MMO universe which envelops it. From today, Eve pilots will have four more reasons to bomb shootymen on behalf of their factional fellows.

Eve pilots raise $185,175 for Icelandic Red Cross in PLEX for Good charity drive

A year and a half of the most entertaining PCGN news stories are testament to the fact that PLEX makes people do very bad things. Best was the spy who disbanded a major alliance from the inside and made off with 400 billion ISK (one of Ian Fleming's lesser-known novels).

But occasionally, PLEX sees a group of like-minded Eve fans do something very good. Over the last couple of weeks, for instance, they’ve raised 12,345 PLEX for the Icelandic Red Cross - $185,175 in real-world currency.

Capital: Eve Online fares well in sci-fi spaceship size comparison chart

Precisely how titanic is a Titan? It’s this question, among many others asked over half a century of terribly large ships in films and games, that deviant artist DirkLoechel seeks to answer with a big old chart. It’s the kind you might find on the bedroom wall somebody who’ll inevitably go on to be a Duncan Jones or a Chris Roberts or a Buzz Aldrin, and it’s marvellous.

CCP lead PLEX drive for Typhoon Haiyan victims

The Eve community have spent a decade betraying each others’ socks off, but their charitable work has been going on nearly as long. They’re raised more than $150,000 USD in donations since their first collection tin was rattled in the wake of 2004’s Indian Ocean tsunami. And the PLEX for GOOD initiative begun three years ago, in which CCP donate $15 for every PLEX pledged, has accounted for two-thirds of that total.

The latest beneficiaries of PLEX for GOOD are the Icelandic Red Cross, for their continuing efforts in alleviating the aftermath of November 8’s typhoon in the Philippines.

Eve Fanfest 2014 tickets go on sale with early bird ticket prices available

CCP have started selling tickets to their annual convention, Eve Fanfest. Last year marked a decade of the sandbox MMO so you might think this year would be a step down in festivities. Though, with the announcement that Eve Valkyrie, CCP’s virtual reality dogfighter, has gone into full-time development this will likely be the event where they reveal all about the game.

Plus, there will be a whole new Eve expansion for the developers to talk about and it will be nearly a year since the release of Dust 514.

It looks like CCP will be handling a packed schedule.
