Final Fantasy XIV new player guide

Final Fantasy XIV is one of my favourite MMORPGs. We think it’s one of the best MMOs ever created. It has an incredibly engrossing story, engaging combat, and is arguably one of the prettiest MMOs around.

But some of its best and unique features are also hard to stomach for a lot of new and potential players, through a combination of ambiguous terms and intimidating depth. I’m here today to tell you that this doesn’t have to be the case. We’ve dissected and de jargoned FFXIV’s unique systems so that it’s easier to digest for people still on the fence, and new players alike.

So: here’s what you need to know to play Final Fantasy XIV. And you definitely should.

Welcome to my review in progress for Final Fantasy XIV: Heavensward, Square Enix’s first expansion to their self-redeeming Final Fantasy MMO. This blog will be regularly updated, so be sure to check back often for my latest thoughts and adventures, and be sure to get involved in the comments section for discussion and questions alike.

Last update - levels 50-52: launch day and Ishgard.

Square Enix reminds us that Final Fantasy XIV: Heavensward is days away with a launch trailer

Square Enix’s E3 conference may be over, but there’s still plenty of games to show off. Final Fantasy XIV: Heavensward is only a couple of days away from entering Early Access, before launching on June 23rd. I’ve played it, and it’s great - you can read all about it in my hands-on.

But for now, whet your mouth with this launch trailer. If you’re interested in the new Limit Break abilities for each job, you’ll want to check this out.

Hands-on with Final Fantasy XIV: Heavensward

I like Final Fantasy XIV a lot; it’s one of the most polished MMOs you can get your hands on, and it’s getting its first expansion next month: Heavensward. It’s all about a war between dragons and some knights, and you’re put right in the thick of it. It’s teeming with new content too. Ten additional levels, over 50 hours of quest and story content, a new race - the reptilian Au Ra - and three new jobs: the tanky Dark Knight, gung-ho Machinist and star-wielding Astrologian.

After spending a good few hours with the new content, I can’t help but be excited. Here’s why you should be too.

Naoki Yoshida on the success of Final Fantasy XIV; "The most important attribute is not giving up"

The success story behind Final Fantasy XIV is far from a fairy tale. It was deemed a catastrophic failure shortly after its launch five years ago, and it wasn’t even clear that it could still be salvaged when Square Enix put a fresh face in charge: game director and producer Naoki Yoshida - a man with no prior experience working on MMOs, nor with the Final Fantasy franchise.

Tearing down the old game and rebuilding it from scratch, Yoshida managed to do the seemingly impossible - refuse turning to free-to-play, and relaunch the game as Final Fantasy XIV: A Realm Reborn. It revived the flagging MMO, earning both critical success and over 4 million subscribers.

We sat down with Naoki Yoshida at a preview event for the game’s upcoming debut expansion, Heavensward, to find out how exactly Final Fantasy XIV defied a seemingly inevitable fate.

Square Enix transform Final Fantasy XIV into a fighting game, because why not

I’ve checked, double checked and triple checked the date - it’s not April 1st, but Square Enix sure did miss a golden opportunity here. To demonstrate the versatility of the engine behind Final Fantasy XIV, the developers have created a special trailer, reimagining the MMO as a fighting game.

And before you begin to think this is an upcoming release, regretfully, it’s just for show - but it’s damn cool nevertheless.

Final Fantasy XIV is celebrating reaching 4 million accounts with free time for lapsed subscribers

Square Enix’s gamble, the shutting down and subsequent massive overhaul of Final Fantasy XIV, has clearly paid off. Today the company revealed that the MMO boasts 4 million registered accounts. The number of active subscribers is likely very different, but that still means 4 million sales.

Eorza’s not so busy that it can’t fit in some more folks, though. Square Enix wants to tempt lapsed subscribers back in for some celebrating in the Gold Saucer - only just added to the game - or whatever else takes their fancy.

Chocobo racing comes to Final Fantasy XIV with Gold Saucer update

It’s a fact universally acknowledged that a Final Fantasy game without chocobo racing is some kind of bullshit. That’s why today’s Final Fantasy XIV: A Realm Reborn update is so important: it adds chocobo racing and — let us give thanks — chocobo breeding. At long last, A Realm Reborn is a proper Final Fantasy game.

Final Fantasy XIV: A Realm Reborn is offering a free weekend to inactive players

If you’ve currently on holiday from Final Fantasy XIV: A Realm Reborn, Square Enix would like you to know that they miss you. In fact, they miss you so much, they’re offering a free weekend to play the Final Fantasy MMO.

The main attraction is the feature packed 2.5 update, which landed back on January 20th. Inside, players can pay a visit to the new Manderville Gold Saucer, three new dungeons, and progress a fresh batch of story-driven quests.

Final Fantasy XIV's huge 2.5 update includes the long-awaited Gold Saucer

Final Fantasy XIV’s impending 2.5 patch is massive; so massive, in fact, that it’s going to be split up into three parts over the next couple of months. New story quests, dungeons, extra dungeon difficulties, a new raid, the build up to the upcoming expansion, Heavensward - there will be a lot to get through.

What’s most important, however, is the Gold Saucer, finally arriving next month with mini-games and, yes, chocobo racing.

Only 50 teams have beaten Final Fantasy XIV's Final Coil of Bahamut raid

In the latest Letter from the Producer for Square Enix’s Final Fantasy XIV: A Realm Reborn, director and producer Naoki Yoshida revealed that only 50 teams across all servers had bested the games hardest raid. The Final Coil of Bahamut was released with patch 2.4 a month ago.

“For those of you still making your way through, or preparing to step foot into the Final Coil─only about 50 teams have cleared the entirety of the Final Coil across all servers," said Yoshida. “So there’s no need to rush."

Yoshida also revealed a couple of Heavensward specific features, such as flying mounts, a new primal boss and the confirmation of the Dark Knight job.
