Final Fantasy XIV: Heavensward expansion due out June 23rd; Mac version also in the works

Yesterday at PAX East, Square Enix stuck a release date on their next Final Fantasy XIV expansion: Heavensward. Releasing on June 23rd on PC, PS4 and PS3, the expansion will also mark the debut of a Mac version of the game.

Pre-orders will go live on March 16th, where three versions of the game will be available: a standard edition, collectors edition and a version that’s bundled with the base game.

Final Fantasy XIV is celebrating reaching 4 million accounts with free time for lapsed subscribers

Square Enix’s gamble, the shutting down and subsequent massive overhaul of Final Fantasy XIV, has clearly paid off. Today the company revealed that the MMO boasts 4 million registered accounts. The number of active subscribers is likely very different, but that still means 4 million sales.

Eorza’s not so busy that it can’t fit in some more folks, though. Square Enix wants to tempt lapsed subscribers back in for some celebrating in the Gold Saucer - only just added to the game - or whatever else takes their fancy.

Chocobo racing comes to Final Fantasy XIV with Gold Saucer update

It’s a fact universally acknowledged that a Final Fantasy game without chocobo racing is some kind of bullshit. That’s why today’s Final Fantasy XIV: A Realm Reborn update is so important: it adds chocobo racing and — let us give thanks — chocobo breeding. At long last, A Realm Reborn is a proper Final Fantasy game.

Final Fantasy XIV: A Realm Reborn is upgrading to DirectX 11 with Heavensward expansion

In the latest Letter From the Producer Live for Square Enix’s Final Fantasy XIV: A Realm Reborn, players finally got confirmation that the superior rendering platform that is DirectX 11 is finally on its way. The graphical upgrade - to an already stunning game if I may say so - will make its entrance with the games first expansion: Heavensward.

Final Fantasy XIV: A Realm Reborn is offering a free weekend to inactive players

If you’ve currently on holiday from Final Fantasy XIV: A Realm Reborn, Square Enix would like you to know that they miss you. In fact, they miss you so much, they’re offering a free weekend to play the Final Fantasy MMO.

The main attraction is the feature packed 2.5 update, which landed back on January 20th. Inside, players can pay a visit to the new Manderville Gold Saucer, three new dungeons, and progress a fresh batch of story-driven quests.

Final Fantasy XIV's huge 2.5 update includes the long-awaited Gold Saucer

Final Fantasy XIV’s impending 2.5 patch is massive; so massive, in fact, that it’s going to be split up into three parts over the next couple of months. New story quests, dungeons, extra dungeon difficulties, a new raid, the build up to the upcoming expansion, Heavensward - there will be a lot to get through.

What’s most important, however, is the Gold Saucer, finally arriving next month with mini-games and, yes, chocobo racing.

Only 50 teams have beaten Final Fantasy XIV's Final Coil of Bahamut raid

In the latest Letter from the Producer for Square Enix’s Final Fantasy XIV: A Realm Reborn, director and producer Naoki Yoshida revealed that only 50 teams across all servers had bested the games hardest raid. The Final Coil of Bahamut was released with patch 2.4 a month ago.

“For those of you still making your way through, or preparing to step foot into the Final Coil─only about 50 teams have cleared the entirety of the Final Coil across all servers," said Yoshida. “So there’s no need to rush."

Final Fantasy XIV London Fanfest reveals EU servers, flying mounts and Dark Knight job

If you thought that Square Enix were done with their initial reveal of the new Heavensward expansion pack for Final Fantasy XIV: A Realm Reborn, think again. Just a week later at this year’s FFXIV London Fanfest, director Naoki Yoshida announced that EU players can expect to see an EU datacentre put in place in the near future.

Yoshida also revealed a couple of Heavensward specific features, such as flying mounts, a new primal boss and the confirmation of the Dark Knight job.

Square Enix previews new Rogue class and Ninja job for Final Fantasy XIV: A Realm Reborn

Patch 2.4 for Final Fantasy XIV: A Realm Reborn is bringing with it a new class in the form of a Rogue, and a new “Ninja" job too. Rogues will use knives and daggers while they remain in the shadows. Ninjas on the other hand aren’t your stereotypical type: they’re able to use powerful energies through “signs" to manipulate the battlefield.

Final Fantasy XIV: A Realm Reborn begins its free two-week trial

The near enough fourteenth Final Fantasy game is throwing open its doors today and inviting buy-curious players to sample a fourteen-day trial of the MMO, free of charge.

The trial will limit dabbling players to level 20, which is still a fairly hefty chunk of Eorzea to get stuck into. Eorzea, in case you are wondering, is the random collaboration of syllables assigned to the world in which Final Fantasy XIV: A Realm Reborn is set.

Final Fantasy XIV: A Realm Reborn 2.3 calls on Eorzea's defenders today

Final Fantasy XIV’s chunky 2.3 update, complete with gargantuan beards and new dungeons, has just launched today. New questlines, challenging boss battles, chocobo raising and a mountain of other additions have being thrown into the MMO.

It’s come a long way since it was shut down and rebranded as A Realm Reborn, which our Nick became very fond when he worked away on his Final Fantasy XIV review, and called it one of the best MMORPGs on PC. Have you had a chance to dip into any of the new content?

Final Fantasy XIV: A Realm Reborn 2.3 adds new dungeons, chocobo raising and one hell of a beard

Final Fantasy XIV: A Realm Reborn’s 2.3 update, Defenders of Eorzea, is a big one, apparently requiring an 8 minute trailer. There does seem to be quite a lot to get through, including Chocobo rearing, new quests, a boss with the most magnificent beard ever conceived of by the human brain and a slew of new dungeons. It's come a long way since our A Realm Reborn review last year.

Direct your eyes towards the trailer below.

A Realm in Peril: villainy has an oddly-masked new face in Final Fantasy XIV

This trailer for A Realm Reborn’s next big plot twist ticks off plenty of JRPG stereotypes - a stellar soundtrack; unparalleled boss fights; unbearable cuteness; dialogue so unnatural as to be irritating, if the voice acting weren’t so entertaining.

But MMOs are the sphere where Eastern genre conventions meet West - storytelling standards are low, all battles are real-time, and a game like Final Fantasy XIV can be the best place to quest on any continent according to our A Realm Reborn review.

So, er - go easy on it, yeah? It's actually very good.

Final Fantasy XIV boasts 2 million registered accounts, causing moogle habitats to shrink

Some people have been playing Final Fantasy XIV: A Realm Reborn. 2 million of them, according to Square Enix, and it's, no surprise when you read our A Realm Reborn review.

This isn’t 2 million active players, instead counting every registered account worldwide. That’s still 2 million copies sold, however, since Square Enix’s MMO is one of the few subscription based MMOs left.

Deus XIV: the Illuminati arrive to populate hard mode dungeons in A Realm Reborn patch 2.2

After thousands of years pulling the strings from the shadows, the Illuminati have finally emerged in the guise of goblin scholars to overrun the swamp dungeon of Brayflox’s Longstop. The dungeon is situated somewhere in Eorzea, Final Fantasy XIV’s reborn realm.

If this was their long game, I didn’t read anything about it in any of those private emails dotted about Deus Ex.

Square Enix has released today a new video detailing the contents of the new patch coming to Final Fantasy XIV: A Realm Reborn - Through the Maelstrom. The headline feature: the appearance of the water serpent primal, Leviathan. Along with additional quests, more hard mode dungeons and gear glamouring, the patch will also introduce the The Second Coil of Bahamut: a continuation of the games end-game raid.

This is the second patch to hit Final Fantasy XIV since it's release; you can read what we thought in our A Realm Reborn review.
