Final Fantasy XIV’s final beta is live now for veterans, tomorrow for newcomers

The rebirth of Final Fantasy XIV is live, and you can read all about it in our A Realm Reborn review.

Squeenix’s salvaged Final Fantasy MMO lives for the weekend. Sorry, is live for the weekend. Crucial difference. Old hands who participated in phase three in June and can probably ride a Chocobo with no hands already have instant access; the rest of us can hop over to join them from 2am PDT / 6pm BST tomorrow.

Now we’re in open beta, progress will carry over to release servers – making this the perfect time to get grinding.

Square are stress-testing their housing zones this weekend, which means the town of Mist in Limsa Lominsa – accessible from Lower La Noscea – will be open to explore. Clearly there’ll be no player houses to ogle yet, but the dev team have filled the area with sample homes as if they’re selling a new property development or something.

What’s more, once players complete a quest entitled Bowl of Embers, they can clash for the first time in PvP arena The Wolves’ Den. But there’s a catch: you’ll need to be level 30 or over – and if you haven’t ported character data from Final Fantasy XIV 1.0, you won’t be.

Still: more time to revel in that New House Smell, if that’s a thing, and hack at mobs in the wilderness. Beta veterans: how’ve you found the A. A. Milne-ishly named Eorzea thus far?
