GOG is offering free copies of STALKER to owners of DRM-riddled boxed versions

Reclaim DRM-free games at GOG

GOG’s crusade against pesky DRM has spawned a new, consumer-friendly initiative, where folk can “reclaim” their games, DRM-free. It’s starting off with only a few games, but GOG plans to expand the initiative with more.

Basically, you’ll be able to get a free, DRM-free copy of games you already own, side-stepping problems with boxed games that came with Gamespy’s now defunct DRM and online services.

Right now, the only games you can do this with are the STALKER series and, specific to Russia, Mount & Blade: Warband, Mount & Blade: With Fire and Sword, and Eador Genesis, but GOG is looking into adding more games.

All you need to do is find your Gamespy (or StarForce, for Russian customers) key and redeem it on GOG. You’ll get a new, digital copy of the game in your GOG library, DRM-free, including the free bonuses that come with it.

So far, over 9,000 games have been claimed, which comes to just shy of $150,000.
