History Respawned: Historians vs. Video Games

History Respawned: Assassin's Creed IV

Combining my twin loves of history and video games, History Respawned plonks historians in front of a game and gets them to chat about the periods that titles set in the past attempt to ape. A noble endeavour, if ever there was one.

The first episode is a 40 minute look into the world of Assassin’s Creed IV: Black Flag, with Dr. Bryan Glass, a professor at Texas State University who teaches a class on piracy, discussing the historical realities of high sea adventures and swashbuclking with host Bob Whitaker.

Despite ostensibly being a sci-fi series with an alternate history, Assassin’s Creed has always managed to fit in a significant chunk of historical accuracy, only really deviating from reality when dealing with the Assassins vs. Templars conflict. And it seems like Black Flag continues this tradition, by peppering the game with facts amid all the secret wars and impossibly fast ships.

Cheers, RPS.
