Kathy Rain saddles up on a Harley for some noir investigations

Kathy Rain

What feels like the golden age of revived classic-style adventures continues with Kathy Rain, a new point-n-click from indie studio Clifftop Games. With a thick noirish atmosphere and 90s references a plenty, the first trailer introduces us to our attitude-heavy hero Kathy, and her pink-rimmed Harley chopper.

The story will follow Kathy as she returns to her childhood hometown after her grandfather dies. But as with all good mysteries, someone dying is just the start.

“As she follows a trail of clues he left behind, questions emerge,” say Clifftop Games. “What was Joseph Rain really looking for that night all those years ago? What turned him into a mere shell of a man, confined to a wheelchair? What secret did a suicidal young artist take with her to the grave, and why are so many people in Conwell Springs going mad? The truth is dark and sinister…”

While not uncommon for adventure games to still be made in pixel art graphics, Kathy Rain’s 90s setting makes it feel all the more authentic, and the stuttered animation on the TV with classic moments from Pulp Fiction and US politics is a great touch.

Clifftop Games is made up of just one man: Joel Staaf Hästö. Right now Kathy Rain has no release date, but we’ll that pass since we’re sure Joel has a lot on his plate. The game can be seen in action at PAX Prime’s Indie Megabooth though between August 28-31st.
