League of Legends minion XP bug fix coming today; “We understand that this problem is a potentially significant issue”

Minions are the river on which the good tub League of Legends floats. The currents and eddies they create are the subject of constant debate, so it’s small wonder that players have picked up on an XP bug that’s seen one side favoured over the other this last week. Today, thankfully, Riot will deploy an update to remedy the problem.

Blue minions have been relinquishing two more XP upon death than their purple equivalents, which obviously won’t do. While that’s a small fraction of the 50-something base XP normally doled out by a melee minion (subject to match length), Riot have recognised the potential for the numbers to add up to a major levelling advantage for one side.

“We understand that this problem is a potentially significant issue,” wrote the developers yesterday. “When we attempted a solution on Wednesday, additional complications arose.

“Currently we have a confirmed fix for the bug, but given that server stability is of high importance to us, deploying it over the weekend just isn’t viable.”

As such, the dev team will release the hotfix “as soon as possible” today. Tournament servers had already been patched ahead of the World Championship Group Stage games played yesterday.

“Thank you for your patience, summoners, and we apologize for the inconvenience,” concluded Riot.

Game systems designer Alexander Brazie said that the fix would increase the XP of blue minions “so that purple team gains the missing xp per melee minion”. But I think he means the other way around, doesn’t he? Ah, I’m sure they’ve got it right.

Thanks, Reign of Gaming.
