Left 4 Dead 2 Review

Which is your favourite character in Left 4 Dead 2?

No; Left 4 Dead 2's characters are all simply just avatar skins with unique dialogue. There's no 'class' system, so it doesn't matter who you choose, the game remains the same.

Left 4 Dead 2's four characters play identically, and differ only through cosmetics and the lines they spout during quiet moments. That's reason enough to pick a favourite, though: they are each three-dimensional personalities, though not intrusive enough to intrude on their roles as avatars.

How good an FPS is Left 4 Dead 2?

154

Oh, yes. There's an argument to be made that Left 4 Dead lost some of the exquisite balance of its tiny armoury by expanding it for the sequel - filling the world with impromptu melee weapons and special ammo types. But it's an argument soon drowned beneath the racket of the chainsaw or the insistence of the combat shotgun.

Very much so. It's sense of pace is remarkable, and the escalation of panic over the course of a campaign provides a very distinct and unique shooting experience. The combination of guns and close melee weapons adds variety to the combat, which is brutal and ugly.

How does Left 4 Dead 2 reward you for playing tactically?

With your ongoing survival. Even on default difficulty, you're going to need to communicate and stay together. Players can never hack it as lone wolves - when incapacitated by special infected, there's no way out without the assistance of a fellow player. That's a series design principle reflected across the game.

With victory: Left 4 Dead is designed as such that you will almost always fail a mission if you don't work together. Special infected enemies can pin you down and you're unable to escape without the help of another player, and even if you manage to respawn you'll be locked in a cupboard until someone rescues you. Practically every mechanic is constructed with teamwork in mind.

How much fun are the weapons in Left 4 Dead 2?

154

The sheer variety of weapons in this sequel could keep you interested for hours. The guns benefit from the organic pacing of the thing: you get to enjoy taking potshots and practicing with the scattered (and mostly dormant) infected dotted around the flats and parking lots of the levels - and then push your weapons to their limits against the waves.

Really fun, thanks to Left 4 Dead 2's grotesque enemy damage models. Shotgun blasts rip chunks of flesh from a zombie's ribcage, the hunting rifle causes heads to burst like red goo-filled water balloons. It's this gory feedback that offers a morbid sense of satisfaction to your shots.

What strategies have you learned to survive in Left 4 Dead 2?

Stick together, and keep moving. There's caution, and then there's just inviting the game to spawn ever more waves before you.

It's better to find zombies than let them find you. The worst thing is to be caught off your guard, so keep moving and keep your eyes open.

How bleak is the end of the world in Left 4 Dead 2?

154

Fairly bleak. Some post-apocalyptic scenarios default to a familiar version of zombie-dom we've long been desensitised to, Left 4 Dead presents a world in which normality is all too recent. Though the cities have emptied out after waves of evacuations, humanity feels close enough to touch. Of particular note are the messages scrawled, crossed-out and rescrawled on the walls of safehouses - missives from loved ones who never found each other, or nihilistic bickerings about the precise nature of the end of the world.

That's a hangover from Left 4 Dead 1: new is the cultural influence of New Orleans and its environs, which seeps from the swamps to the streets and into the soundtrack. There's a kind of warmth there. But in general, Left 4 Dead 2's connection with humanity leaves it extra-bleak.

The game's famous wall-scrawlings paint a picture of a pretty bleak world. This is not a place that you want to be. Yet, unlike a game like DayZ, Left 4 Dead 2 doesn't feel post-apocalyptic, more so it feels like just the start of an epidemic that could decimate itself as easily as the world.

How gory is Left 4 Dead 2?

154

Gory enough that it was available only as a censored version in Australia until the very recently-implemented R18+ rating. Boomers explode into red mist, the wandering witch detaches her jaw for maximum unsettlement, and sniped enemies do the watermelon thing. For net gore it's no worse than, say, Half-Life 2, with its scattered gibs and headcrabs. But the frequency is higher. Constant, even.

Really gory. The first game was bloody and had a little head-popping, but L4D2 goes all-out on the blood, guts, and gore. Shooting a zombie in the abdomen will cause their entrails to leak out. The new melee weapons carve off limbs and heads, whilst the chainsaw reduces everything to a red haze. It's grotesque, basically.

How scary are the zombies in Left 4 Dead 2?

154

In the original, the standard creeps were made scary by their speed - though perhaps that fear's faded as the running zombie has become the cultural default. The special infected remain terrifying, however - archetypes that almost seem to reflect the people they once were - the behooded hunter; the bloated boomer; the rasping smoker. They're all recognisible in silhouette - or, worse, as a distant, distinctive noise - and the more terrifying for it.

Left 4 Dead 2's zombies are some of the most genuinely scary in the business. There's few things more chilling than the shriek of a witch, and nothing that can quite match the sense of panic the cries of a horde stampeding through the streets can bring.

How good are the graphics in Left 4 Dead 2?

Functional. Economical, in that way Valve shooters tend to be. It's ageing well, but doesn't have your fancy physically-based rendering or global illumination.

Despite its age, Left 4 Dead still manages to look its best. The cartoonish nature of the art design works as a nice anti-aging creme, and that flat matt look that the Source engine provides doesn't feel as dated as early glossy Unreal games. There's no flashy new effects, but you'll likely not miss them.

How good are the sounds in Left 4 Dead 2?

154

Not just good - iconic. Left 4 Dead veterans can't help but spend the intervening time between sessions recreating the boomer's bubonic bubbing and the smoker's cough. The witch's cry has become one of the most terrifying noises in gaming, inviting an almost pavlovian reaction.

One of Left 4 Dead 2's real high points. Blood-curdle screams and shrieks really set the atmosphere, and the unique sound design on every enemy type means your situation is always identifiable from what your ears pick up.

How does Left 4 Dead 2 run on your PC?

Like a dream dressed as a nightmare. Nothing here should trouble an even vaguely contemporary PC.

Like all of Valve's games, Left 4 Dead 2 is beautifully optimised, meaning pretty much any PC designed for gaming from the last five years will have no problems at all.

Why do gamers stop playing Left 4 Dead 2 after playing for many hours

My player group gradually disbanded after running through the levels again and again and again. For everything good that Left 4 Dead 2 does, you will eventually get bored of seeing the same levels.
