Planetside 2’s creative director has resigned

Last week SOE broke off from Sony and formed Daybreak Game Company, with the help of investment firm Columbus Nova. They retained control of Planetside 2, EverQuest, and H1Z1. Earlier this week a number of staff were laid off, including the Dave Georgeson and Steve Danuser, EverQuest’s franchise lead and lead content designer respecitvely.

Now Planetside 2’s creative director, Matt Higby, has resigned from the studio, saying “This is a move I've been considering for a while now, and the reorganization provided the right opportunity for me to exit."

It’s official: Planetside 2 holds the Guinness World Record for biggest FPS battle in history

Over the weekend you could have taken part in a small part of history. Planetside 2 was trying to reclaim the Guinness World Record for ‘Most Players Online in an FPS Battle’. The record was held by Man vs Machine, who had managed to get 999 players into a single game.

Planetside 2 smashed the record, bringing in 1,158 players.

You can help Planetside 2 get into the Guinness Book of Records

Some of us just aren’t that talented: I can’t pull a 188 tonne planeI can’t beat the highest score on Donkey Kong; and, until I grow a womb, get pregnant, and have triplets, it’s unlikely I’ll ever hold the Guinness World Record for heaviest birth. But everyone, even my crap self, can help break the record that Planetside 2 is aiming for. In fact, it’s essential that we do.

SOE want to break the record for ‘Most Players Online in an FPS Battle’ and they need you to do it.

Planetside 2 update adds activatable knives and spitfire auto-turrets for engineers

Planetside 2 update adds activatable knives and spitfire auto-turrets for engineers

A new update to the never-ending war game that is Planetside 2, has seen numerous new additions, as well as a winter holiday event. Each soldier in their respective factions can now equip their knife permanently, unlike their quick action counterpart, which allows much faster slashes in close combat. There’s also a new type of knife, that when activated empowers the knife to do increased damage, and also granting unique visual effects.

Engineers have also finally got access to spitfire auto-turrets. This nift war machine will auto-target enemy infantry in a respectable area, firing on the nearest thing that moves. While they’re super easy to kill, they’ll ensure your enemy thinks twice about running blind into those shield gen rooms.

Finally, being that time and year, Auraxis has seen a small incursion of snowmen. Players can select a new directive to go and hunt these meddlesome festive creatures.

Planetside 2 to receive deployable automated turrets; "the lethality of these turrets is still being discussed"

Systems and UI design lead, Jon Weathers, has revealed plans to add an automated deployable sentry turret for the Engineer class in Planetside 2. The addition could come as soon as next month, but not until extensive playtesting has been held on the PTS server.

“If our tests go well, we are aiming for auto-turrets to go live late November/early December." said Weathers.

Planetside 2 grows space pumpkins in today's update

Did you know? Space pumpkins boast a variety of medical and scientific uses over their plainer, earth-bound cousins. If you didn’t, not to worry: you’re about to become rapidly acquainted with the orange wonderfruit’s interstellar variant.

In a fortuitously seasonal mix-up, a ship-load of pumpkins has been spilled evenly over the surface of Auraxis. The galaxy’s fruit-pickers aren’t equipped with the necessary training to enter that famous warzone, so it’ll be up to Auraxis’ soldiers to send pumpkin seeds along their way.

PlanetSide 2 gets its first new aircraft since launch: the Valkyrie

In PlanetSide 2, I fly on instinct. This involves flailing around wildly while yelling “we’re all going to die!" It’s very relaxing. And now the dangerous skies of Auraxis are set to get busier, with the introduction of the first new aircraft to hit the game since launch: the Valkyrie.

Take a gander at the gunship in action, below.

Wind of Change: SOE adding weather to H1Z1 and PlanetSide 2

Auraxis, the location of PlanetSide 2’s global war, is a large, diverse globe - expanding still with the introduction of a new continent, Hossin. But it’s one where the weather never changes, unless you count drop pods raining down from above as a weather phenomenon.

Weather effects have been teased by SOE since before launch, and it’s one of the things the team’s been wanting to add for a long time. Amid all the new content, it’s still not been forgotten, as CEO John Smedley revealed on Twitter earlier this evening.

Hossin. If the name of Planetside 2’s new continent sounds familiar, that’s because it’s been bandied about since the game’s launch - and been in development even longer.

“We’ve figured out that creating a ‘good’ outpost in Planetside 2 takes about 2-3 weeks of level design, art playtesting and iteration time minimally, per outpost," said SOE’s Matt Higby. “Multiply that by 80 or so, and you’ll get a good idea of how much work is required for a high-quality continent."

Hit it: PlanetSide 2 hit detection problems encountered, fixed

You’ve got a sneaky Vanu soldier in your sights, and she hasn’t spotted you. You take a deep breath, look on either side of the ridge you’re perched on - just to make sure you’re alone - and then you fire, right at the Vanu’s skull. Nothing happens. She scarpers, and you’re left without a kill.

If this has happened to you, then you might have been a victim of dodgy hit detection. SOE’s John Smedley explained, on Reddit, that it may have affected up to 20 percent of players at one point or another. A fix is up on the public test server at the moment.

ProSiebenSat.1 and Planetside 2 part ways; EU accounts to migrate back to SOE

The division between the European Planestide 2 community and its international counterpart became much starker with the introduction of the game's Player Studio, which wasn't available on ProSienbenSat.1's EU servers.

So the atmosphere today is of quiet gratitude on the official SOE forums, and of sweary celebration over on the Planetside Reddit. SOE have announced the near-future migration of all ProSienbenSat.1 accounts for Planetside 2, DC Universe Online and EverQuest II back to SOE.

A new you: PlanetSide 2 gets implants and gives the medic class a fresh coat of paint

PlanetSide 2 has been in for a spot of surgery, and has come out with some implants. Not pert buttocks or enhanced pecs, but bits of tech implanted into soldiers that allow them greater flexibility, improving loadout choices.

Three tiers of implants are available to players, and everyone will receive a tier-1 implant: Enhanced Targeting to kickstart the body modification craze. More implants can “drop", a bit like a traditional loot system but absent the actual act of looting, or can be purchased for certs or Station Cash.

PlanetSide 2 in-game adverts went a bit wonky yesterday, so SOE has sent them to the ER

Along with the new Mission System, SOE implemented some changes to its in-game notification system in the latest PlanetSide 2 update. These notifications were directed at certain players, essentially serving as adverts.

Nobody wants to get pestered with ads when playing a game, and yesterday it all got a bit out of control. The changes to the system meant that on top of offers and special deals, players were being notified about events - which would normally be pretty convenient - but with multiple events going on, deals still being promoted, and a game update that reset who should get notifications, players ended up getting bombarded.

Our bad, says SOE.

Stop wandering around aimlessly: PlanetSide 2 Missions System is live

With the latest PlanetSide 2 update, the first phase of the Missions System has been introduced. Like the invisible hand of a friendly general, it nudges players towards objectives. Enter a new area, and the Mission System will assign you a goal based on your proximity to the various bases and fortifications, giving you the impetus to invade territory or shoot men in the face from behind the safety of walls.

There’s no end to these objectives - when you finish one, another will appear. And while there’s not tangible rewards for completion, you will still get a 15 percent XP bonus if you succeed while in a squad. Slap your eyes below for full Mission System details.

Planetside 2 vehicle revealed: the Valkyrie

There’s an itch in Planetside 2 that needs to be scratched. It’s helicopter shaped and there’s a tinge of Norse mythology to it. Yup, we didn’t know it but till this day we’ve been wanting the Valkyrie, a fast attack aircraft which is designed for dropping small squads of troops at the front line.

It’s coming this Summer.
