Planetside 2, the free-to-play MMO shooter, is getting a boxed copy to be sold in shops and through online retailers.

Sony Online Entertainment’s game will be published in physical form by ProSiebenSat.1 and Koch Media. Launching on 16th August, the game will retail at £7.99, which is a bit steep for a game that’s free to download, surely? Not at all, dear reader, as that £7.99 bags you in-game items – some of which are exclusive to the retail edition – worth £40.00.

The disc copy will contain the most up-to-date version of Planetside 2, along with the 24 Carat Power Pack, which provides a golden SMG for each of the three empires, a 7-day +50% XP boost, and 1000 Station Cash. You’ll also be provided with Battle Buddy, a 3-day +50% XP boost for a friend to redeem.

If you’ve yet to get started with Planetside, this isn’t a bad deal if you’re willing to invest money into it straight away. Or perhaps you want to introduce a friend to it, but simply emailing a link to download the client doesn’t quite cut it as a birthday present. When you think of those kind of situations, a boxed version isn’t so mental after all. Stop crying for the all-digital future already!

Planetside 2 will be available at Amazon, Shopto, and Zavvi, and you can pre-order now.
