Plants vs. Zombies: Garden Warfare is free for 72 hours with Game Time

There was a time when articles I wrote about EA would begin with me choosing another Elder God name to call the publisher. But these days, I’m more likely to point out another game they’re offering for free on Origin. This is a change I very much enjoy.

Plants vs. Zombies Garden Warfare is the latest temporarily free game on Origin’s Game Time initiative. For 72 hours from when you fire the game up, you’ll have full access to the 24-player flora and undead war.

Plants vs Zombies: Garden Warfare now on PC - but it's "not a port"

Plants vs Zombies: Garden Warfare is a port. That is, it’s a new edition of a game released four months ago for Xbox One, developed specifically for PC. The definition is not up for dispute.

So why are PopCap saying that it’s not a port? I think they mean that it’s not a port in the derogatory sense - free of the poor framerates, low resolutions and iffy control schemes we’ve come to expect from console-first developers. Take a look for yourself.

Plants vs Zombies: Garden Warfare micro-transactions are cheap but pointless

Plants vs Zombies: Garden Warfare is due out on June 24th. It’s also grown micro-transactions, likely thanks to a change in water and plant food. EA announced the addition to the not free-to-play game last month, and it’s already come into effect.

The cost of in-game currency is not astronomical, nor is buying this stuff necessary to progress. But it’s worth remembering that Garden Warfare already costs money to buy.

The Origin Overmind wants you to know that Plants vs Zombies: Garden Warfare is out on June 24th

The PC version of Plants vs Zombies: Garden Warfare is due out on June 24th. I know this because it popped up at the end of an advert for Origin. In it, a zombie logs into Origin, has a chat with Origin or maybe just a zombie who works at EA, and then discovers that Garden Warfare is coming out soonish.

Presumably the zombie becomes terrified because that means he’s only got two months to live... well, remain animated. Poor wee guy.

Plants vs Zombies: Garden Warfare grabs capture point A in new mode

With EA holding custody over Plants vs Zombies, it’ll come of no surprise at all that the shootery Garden Warfare is paying homage to big boy FPS Battlefield. In a new mode under codename Gardens and Graveyards, the Plants and Zombies fight over capture points, much like BF players would in a game of Conquest.

Such a concept would be too simple and dull for Plants vs Zombies though, so there’s elements of Rush thrown in for good measure. Plus flying undead.

Plants vs Zombies: Garden Warfare sees you take the fight to the undead... in third-person

What’s the natural evolution of Plants vs Zombies, the tower defense game that had you defend your garden from waves of nasty zombies? A third-person four-player co-op shooter, apparently.

That said, as unlikely a fit for the series as Plants vs Zombies: Garden Warfare seems, it’s did look both wonderfully colourful and wonderfully silly.
