The Mouth of Blizzard has shown up at the gates of their Irvine fortress waving an approximate figure for digital and physical sales of Heart of the Swarm during its launch. It has loads of zeros attached.

Heart of the Swarm shifted about 1.1 million copies in 48 hours – only 400,000 less than Wings over Liberty did over two days in 2010.

“We want to thank the global StarCraft community for the incredible passion and support they’ve shown for Heart of the Swarm,” said CEO Mike Morhaime.

“In addition to a brand-new single-player campaign, we added a ton of enhancements with this expansion to make StarCraft II even more fun to play, and more exciting to watch. We’re pleased to see gamers and eSports fans around the world enjoying Heart of the Swarm.”

Another 1.1 million, presumably at least partly comprised of some of those same buyers, tuned in to watch all-day Heart of the Swarm launch events on Twitch. Concurrent viewing peaking at 125,000.

“StarCraft II has always been one of the most popular games on Twitch, and we’ve noticed a wave of new viewership since Heart of the Swarm launched last week,” said Twitch COO Kevin Lin.

“Viewer numbers are up just about across the board for the most popular StarCraft II pro-gamers and personalities who stream on Twitch.”

We’ve two opinions on Heart of the Swarm’s first week to offer you: Blizzard’s, and our Rob’s. What’s yours?
