Steam Community Update update: closed beta invites for first 50,000 ‘Pillar of the Steam Community’ badge owners, new Friends tab

The final part of Valve’s slowburn reveal for the new Steam Community Update is all about Friends. You know what they say about friends – it’s best to keep them locked in one place where you can keep an eye on them. That’s presumably why Valve have invented a new tab, under which to perform all sorts of social networking guff.

Under the Friends tab, a feed will display all of the words, screenshots and other assorted content posted by members of your Friends list. It’ll now be possible to post status updates a la Facebook, with the option to tag the Hubs of specific games you might be mentioning.

Best of all, Friends’ profile names can be replaced with nicknames for convenience, meaning you can number your closest confidants like prisoners or rechristen each as a member of the Addams Family. Or, you know, whatever you like. The beta is available to the first 50,000 owners of the ‘Pillars of the Steam Community’ badge, with an extra invite to share. More invites will disseminate daily until the update goes live.
