Dishonored: Game of the Year Edition trailer tempts a return to Dunwall

There’s a great deal of love for Dishonored around the PCGN offices.* Jeremy and Rob, in particular, won’t speak to anyone who hasn’t walked the streets of Dunwall and tried to vindicate Corvo in the eyes of its denizens.

If you’re one of the types that they wouldn’t speak to then you still have a chance to redeem yourself. Next week sees the release of Dishonored’s Game of the Year Edition.

Prey 2 “was a lot more than a demo” claims ex-Human Head employee

Taking to Twitter to correct what he calls “a lot of old lies" being spoken about Human Head’s cancelled Prey 2 project, ex-Human Head narrative designer and writer Jason Blair claims that what the studio worked on “was a lot more than a demo" and that when Bethesda pulled the plug on its development it was “a full game. And a crazy fun one."

Dishonored: Void Walker Arsenal lets you buy preorder content post release

While preordering a game may be a slightly strange concept in this digital age where there is almost no worry of games stock ever running out and thus requiring copies to be put aside, companies have taken to rewarding the practice with added gubbins. An exclusive weapon here, a VIP map there, a statue of a dismembered woman’s corpse, what have you.

Though, if you weren’t into the whole preordering schtick you may have missed out on Dishonored’s miscellany. Have no fear Bethesda are releasing the extras as a DLC pack called the Void Walker Arsenal.

The Knife of Dunwall PC review - When the fall is all there is

The Knife of Dunwall’s defining characteristic is confidence. Confidence in its setting, the world that Arkane created with Dishonored. Confidence in you, the player, and your ability to navigate increasingly dense and dangerous levels that are as unforgiving as anything in the core game. Confidence in itself, in being able to break free from its predecessor and pursue a story with a character whose fate we already know.

From the outset, we understand that our character, the assassin Daud, is doomed. His godlike patron, The Outsider, tells him as much in the opening scene. He cannot escape what his assassination of Empress Kaldwin has set in motion, and it will be the end of him. But is he damned as well as doomed? It is possible, in this powerful expansion to one of last year’s best games, to find some redemption in the twilight of a long and bloody career. But you still have to face Dunwall.

Report: Half Life 2: Return to Ravenholm screenshots found; cancelled episode developed by Arkane StudiosValveTime are reporting that they've discovered screenshots and artwork from the cancelled Half Life 2 episode Return to Ravenholm. The project was being developed by Arkane Studios, makers of Dishonored, back in 2006 but was cancelled because Valve felt that the suburb overrun by zombies and headcrabs had been "pretty much played out".

Mercy Rules: what The Heart knows and the ethics of killing in Dishonored

There is this scene in Unbreakable where Bruce Willis’s awakening superhero, David Dunn, stands in the center of a train station and lets the crowd buffett him. With each touch, he sees the crimes perpetrated by the people around him. He eventually discovers a killer in the crowd, and sets off to stop him.

But what stays with me is all the crimes he let pass. He stood in a sea of malignance, letting thieves, thugs, and rapists go free. I always wondered how he could do that.

Dishonored ducked boss fights, calling them "dogmatic" tropes of video gamesSeeing the fuss kicked up surrounding Deus Ex: Human Revolution's boss fights must have gladdened Harvey Smith's heart, not because he's one to revel in schadenfreude - he may be for all we know, but he's not said words to that effect - but because Arkane Studios had decided to ditch the boss fight trope that's been embedded in games for eons.

What did he say exactly on the matter? Well, for that, you'll have look below.

Dishonored interactive trailer lets you play (and die) in, oh, so many ways

Comment
Dishonored interactive trailer lets you play (and die) in, oh, so many waysI'm quite the fan of this new interactive trailer trend. First we were shown a glimpse of XCOM, now Dishonored. It gives us a flavour of what the game will be like in action, not an FMV or carefully choreographed in game cutscene or, hiss, live action drama, but actual game footage.

So try out, and likely die in, Dishonored below.

The Dishonored demonstration: Arkane sneak and slash through demo level, hint at supernatural enemiesDishonored fans enjoyed a rare treat yesterday evening. At a developer session filled to capacity, they were able to watch one of the designers play through a section of the game. Stepping into Corvo’s shoes, Associate Producer Dinga Bakaba sneaked, shot and stabbed his way across one of the levels, before he and Level Designer Christophe Carrier took questions from the crowd.

Dishonored cartoon tells The Tales of Dunwall. It's a dark and bloody one.Dishonored's release is creeping ever closer and, like firing fireworks out of the window of your car as you drive into your hometown, Arkane are informing us of its imminent arrival with pretty lights and hints of danger.

Yes, the first video of Dishonored's cartoon series may be a piece of marketing fodder but it looks delectable and captures the dark, sickening tone of the game's world.

Check it out below.

Dishonored: everything we know

Comment
Dishonored: everything we knowI think it’s fair to say that Dishonored is one of the most keenly-anticipated video games in a long time, perhaps ever. Stepping into the well-worn shoes of a brutal and downright terrifying assassin named Corvo, a former bodyguard framed for murder, your task is to make your way through the city of Dunwall, exacting your vengeance by disposing of your targets through whatever means you deem necessary. It’s something of a marriage of Bioshock, Thief and Deus Ex, or perhaps better described as a beautiful baby born of all three of these parents...

Dishonored preview: GamesCom's best game

There comes a moment in every generational cycle where developers and publishers get it. When they understand what the technology they’re building for is capable of, what the audience wants, and how to pull together the real design innovations of the past few years. Dishonored, a brilliant magical shooter in which you play a vicious assassin in a weird steampunk alternate reality is that moment.

It’s stunning.

New Dishonored gameplay trailer shows off creative killing, and "death by rat"

Arkane have made a wise choice content-wise in their latest video: recognising that we're likely tiring of running and jumping by this point in the Olympic season, they've opted for showing off some of Dishonored's more unusual muscles: time manipulation, rat summoning, and possession. Something that you can usually only see on the pages of Obscure Sports Quarterly.

Dishonored voice cast is star studded, and the studs are many

Usually when there’s a big Hollywood name attached to a game, it’s on its own, a big star to draw in the crowds, but star singular, so that the budget of the game doesn’t go stratospheric. Dishonored has no such qualms, and not only have they got more than one big name, they’re the right big names, all actors who have proven voice actor experience, or at the very least providing some great versatility with their performances.
Some minor character spoilers likely follow, so close your eyes if you don’t want anything ruined.

Dishonored's E3 trailer has a whale of a timeThere’s no better way to advertise adult content than to put an innocent kids’ song over the top. Dishonored’s E3 trailer plays out to a child singing an altered version of traditional shanty Drunken Sailor while the haemoglobin liberally flows. It’s also the first video to show Dishonored’s gameplay, which has been richly documented but rarely seen.
