Shadow Realms: BioWare teases a new game about losing your car keys

It’s been five years since BioWare released a game that wasn’t set in a pre-existing universe, but a new teaser trailer from the studio suggests something that has bugger all to do with lightsabers, dragons or space.

EA filed a trademark for “Shadow Realms" a while back, and the thumbnail for the teaser shares the name. Unfortunately this doesn’t make things any clearer, as the teaser is a live action trailer about a man in a hoody who seems to have lost his car keys. Take a gander below.

Star Wars: The Old Republic preps for largest story expansion since Rise of the Hutt Cartel

In retrospect, overarching MMO plotlines can sound like supervillain whack-a-mole. The Galactic Republic and Sith Empire might be at war, but together they’ve bopped the Hutt Cartel’s invasion of Makeb on the head, and given the Dread Masters of Oricon a good malleting.

For now, though, Star Wars: The Old Republic’s next major storyline is swathed in mystery, preceded by two new flashpoints that make up its prelude. It might be time to take another look at Star Wars: The Old Republic.

Dragon Age 3: Inquisition delayed into November

The Dragon Age demo at E3 already had us thinking October was too far away now we have to wait a whole other month for Inquisition. “This last bit of time is about polishing the experience we want you to see," writes executive producer Mark Darrah. “Ensuring that our open spaces are as engaging as possible. Strengthening the emotional impact of the Hero's choices. And ensuring the experience you get is the best it can be in the platform you choose to play on."

Take another look at Star Wars: The Old Republic. It's quite good.

Whatever it was that draws millions to Star Wars, many were unconvinced that The Old Republic had it. The feeling of adventure, heroism, mysticism and drama just wasn’t quite right. In the old days, SWTOR just didn’t feel “Star Wars-y" enough for core fans. It’s not an opinion I ever held, but I am an extremely patient person and SWTOR, in the early days, was tailored to a player like me. But I struggled to argue with the naysayers on a critical point, it was a poor MMO.

Over two years have passed since Star Wars: The Old Republic launched.  And it has changed almost beyond recognition.

Star Wars: The Old Republic made $165m in 2013, according to SuperData report

Despite Guild Wars 2, Wildstar, and its own efforts to split its playerbase into have-mounts and have-mount-nots, Star Wars: The Old Republic remains one of the best PC MMOs around.

That’s reflected in the findings of SuperData Research, who report that SWTOR made $165m last year. They say BioWare’s first MMO accounts for 8% of the market for MMOs with subscription options.

Mass Effect 4 survey suggests BioWare are paying attention to Dark Souls, Diablo and Dota

The Mass Effect series has always been better for the odd questionnaire. BioWare used console achievements data to work out what players spent their time doing in the original game, and set about its sequel with knives until there was nothing but good.

The new game looks to be getting a similar treatment. A year and half after longtime series custodian Casey Hudson asked Mass Effect 4 players whether they wanted prequel or sequel, his studio have published a survey.

Dragon Age: Inquisition E3 demo is chattier and more moustachioed than the last

BioWare’s just posted the second part of Dragon Age: Inquisition’s E3 demo. Part one showed off dragon-slaying and a spot of exploration, but the second part focuses on the Inquisitor's companions and they make their way through Redcliffe Castle.

We get to see an angrier, more savage version of Leliana, obviously hardened since Origins, and we’re introduced to the moustachioed mage, Dorian, who David Gaider says is the first gay character he’s written.

Dragon Age: Inquisition's E3 demo makes October 7th seem too far away

When Tim saw Dragon Age: Inquisition at E3 2014, he called the demo “absolutely stunning". Seeing it now, just posted today by BioWare, with Mike Laidlaw narrating, it looks like he was right.

The demo shows a mage and her party travelling through the Hinterlands and through Redcliffe, eventually facing one of the titular dragons in a flashy, but still rather tactical, battle. Take a gander below.

There's never a dry moment in Dragon Age: Inquisition's audio booth

BioWare takes voice acting pretty seriously, as do the folk lending the games their vocal talents. But sometimes you just need to have a laugh and spit water in a miserable man’s face. That’s how Alix Wilton Regan -  one of the Inquisitor’s voices in Dragon Age: Inquisition - makes her spit-takes sound so authentic, apparently.

Watch below, as a poor man becomes a victim of method acting.

Dragon Age: Inquisition followers are scared of horses, won’t be sold as DLC

Mass Effect fans were less than pleased when AI companions were packaged off and sold as DLC, so there’s been a worry for a while that Bioware may do the same with Dragon Age: Inquisition. Mike Laidlaw, creative director for the game, put that fear to bed over the weekend but raised another.

Followers disappear at the sight of horses.

BioWare's David Gaider: more inclusive games make sense from a "business perspective"

“Why are so many people demanding AAA titles to be all feminist and stuff when women don't even buy those games?"

That’s the question one anonymous user took to the Ask A Game Dev Blog - and which prompted a lengthy response from Dragon Age: Inquisition writer David Gaider. Gaider pointed out that with AAA costs rising every year, the question should be why fewer women buy those games.

“Hint: the answer may require more self-examination than you are, strictly speaking, comfortable with," Gaider told the anonymous asker.

Dragon Age: Inquisition at E3 2014: stunning

Let’s get it out of the way: the E3 demo of Dragon Age: Inquisition is absolutely stunning. It is rolling blunderbuss of highlights, a demonstration of the game’s massive open world, a chance to understand how Dragon Age’s pause based combat has been refined and improved, and a first glimpse of the weight of the game’s story choices.

The warm, rapturous applause the demo received was richly deserved.

Dragon Age: Inquisition wants you to feel, but not for the dragons

I know that the latest Dragon Age Inquisition trailer shown off by Microsoft at E3 is meant to be a bit sad and tragic because the piano music and slow motion walking and running informed me of this.

But Dragon Age is really about killing dragons. Well, it is this time. Origins, Awakening and the now unpopular sequel had a surprising lack of dragon slaying given the franchise’s name. No more, though. BioWare’s chucking in loads of dragons. Take a look at some of our scaley chums below.

Dragon Age: Inquisition now at the stage where the "big cuts happen", says Gaider

Dragon Age: Inquisition is a huge game, we’ve been told. Ginormous. But inevitably, it’s about to get a bit smaller. Six months out from a finally-confirmed release date, it’s about to hit alpha - and then the topiary begins.

“This is a pretty stressful time for everyone," writes BioWare Edmonton chief writerman David Gaider on his blog. “Every cut feels like it’s reducing the overall quality of the game, until there are so many of them you feel like you’re producing a piece of crap - until you remind yourself that every game goes through this, and the alternative is shipping late or not at all.

“It’s not a process that any fan will truly understand."

Star Wars: The Old Republic celebrates May the Fourth by showering players with free droids and bonus XP

With Sunday being May 4th, Star Wars Day, BioWare’s no longer canon Star Wars: The Old Republic is planning a celebratory weekend. The jedi won’t be participating, of course, because fun probably leads to the dark side like every other damn thing. Bloody jedi.

BioWare’s celebrating with an XP bonus weekend and a free mini-pet for all players.

Star Wars: The Old Republic's Galactic Stronghold expansion delayed until August

Star Wars: The Old Republic’s housing expansion has been delayed. As anyone who has ever watched Grand Designs can tell you, it always takes longer than you think it will to build a house. And BioWare is building a few.

“We have been listening to what you, our players, were hoping to see from the Galactic Strongholds expansion," said senior producer Bruce Maclean. “When playing early builds of Galactic Strongholds it became that clear that our June Early Access date was simply not enough. For this to truly feel like an expansion, it needs to include the full set of features, including those originally coming later in the year.“

Dragon Age: Inquisition to lob demons from the sky beginning October 7

Dragon Age: Inquisition is aptly named. It feels like the result of an internal investigation at BioWare: into how Dragon Age II’s streamlining squad managed to cut quite so close to the bone; into why the team abandoned the cleverly-scripted encounter design that had served them so well since Baldur’s Gate; into where their mojo went.

The appearance of a firm, final release date suggests they’ve found satisfactory answers to all of those questions - as does this all-too-short trailer.

Pyramid scheme: The Old Republic's PvP Huttball to get a vertical makeover on April 8

One of those things that must have made KOTOR seem such a prime candidate for MMOification - besides its cooldown-based combat system and setting in bloody Star Wars - was its proclivity for minigames.

In 2003, a player might have interrupted their journey of extraordinary self-discovery to play a few rounds of pazaak and watch the pod-racing, before decamping to the Ebon Hawke for a spot of turret target practice.

These are precisely the sort of embedded distractions MMO players like to get involved in. In SWTOR, that’s manifested as something called Huttball: “the most brutal game in the galaxy", funded by its slimiest residents. To date it’s had a single PvP warzone to its name - but BioWare Austin have built a new one in portrait, on the atmospherically poisonous adopted homeworld of the Hutt: Quesh.

Star Wars: The Old Republic's 2014: two new expansions and a storyline to span "the whole year"

SWTOR’s 2013 wasn’t anything at all like its 2012: last year its live team witnessed the game’s playerbase shift from subscription-only to primarily free-to-play; instigated the release of its first proper expansion; and oversaw mammoth construction of an all-new PvP dogfighting mode to banish the memory of on-rails space combat.

In 2014, BioWare Austin hope, there will be no paradigm shifts. Free-to-play will continue to draw in thousands every day, and there’ll be another two expansions - one about the size of a Hutt Cartel, the other as big as a Galactic Starfighter.
