Crytek "didn't have to sell" Homefront: The Revolution to Deep Silver

News that Crytek had dealt with their money troubles coincided last week with the sale of Homefront: The Revolution and its team to Deep Silver. But correlation doesn’t mean causation in this case.

Crytek CEO Cevat Yerli said that the company didn’t need to sell their promising new shooter to stay afloat - but rather made a strategic decision to focus on free-to-play games.

Crytek sells Homefront: new studio, Deep Silver Dambuster, now developing Homefront: The Revolution

Last week, Crytek attempted to put to rest rumours that the company was in trouble. For months, reports had been coming from sources allegedly within Crytek that employees had not been paid for some time, and that around 100 employees actually walked out.

While the Crysis creator did not touch on the subject of unpaid staff, a statement was made that explained how the company was going through a transitional phase from a developer to an online publisher and that it needed more capital, which it had secured. Where did the capital come from? Today, it looks like it came from the sale of the Homefront IP, which has just been acquired by Deep Silver and Koch Media.

Deep Silver would like you to decide what goes in Dead Island 2's collector's edition, please

Care to fly the Zombie Flag of California from your car window? No? Maybe you’d rather wear a beer hat controlled using a dismembered arm? Or perhaps endure a radio alarm clock that groans you awake?

Deep Silver have come up with a whole page-worth of tat like this for Dead Island 2’s collector’s edition. Which particular tat ends up in the box is up to you.

Mercifully, there’s no Zombie Bait option.

Deep Silver parent company Koch Media responds to claims that it's for sale: "We are not for sale"

On Friday, Handelsblatt - a German business newspaper - published an article reporting that Koch Media was for sale, and the media company had enlisted the aid of investment bank UBS to look for a buyer.

Two people “familiar" with the deal informed the newspaper, but Koch Media denies that this is the case. The company - which owns Deep Silver - used the publisher’s Twitter to assure people that Koch Media is not for sale and is, in fact, looking to expand.

Escape Dead Island is the spin-off nobody saw coming: a stealth-driven survival mystery

Whoever thought Dead Island would get so franchisey? Techland’s ambitious but flaky first-person Diablo has become a multi-limbed monster. There’s the servicable expandalone in Dead Island: Riptide; the unasked-for MOBA in Dead Island: Epidemic; the outsourced sequel in Yager’s Dead Island 2; and now the obligatory comic-vignette psychological stealth thriller in Escape Dead Island.

Er, hang on.

Goat Simulator's upcoming retail edition is motivated by comedy

With PC retail coughing up its lungs, only kept alive by life support, it is rather peculiar to see Coffee Stain’s joke prototype turned commercial game, Goat Simulator, get a retail release. But it’s happening, though only in North America.

It’s being brought to stores next month after Dead Island and Metro publisher Deep Silver acquired distribution rights.

Dead Island 2: “Internally we call it the world’s smallest MMO”

“I didn’t realise when I first played Journey that the other people turning up in the game were other players," Dead Island’s game director, Bernd Diemer, told GameTrailers. “The elegance of that stuck with me. The first game was really good, you just pressed a button and someone would join you but we wanted to get rid of even that.

“Internally we call it the world’s smallest MMO."

Dead Island 2 comes from Spec Ops: The Line's Yager, sees the disease hit the mainland

When you really think about it, every landmass is an island, isn’t it? For the purposes of designing a sequel to your first-person Diablo, even the Americas are potential water-bordered dead zones.

While Techland busy themselves with Dying Light and Hellraid, Yager have taken up the reigns for Dead Island 2. Their zombie apocalypse makes a “vast" open world of California, where “paradise meets hell once again".

Dead Island: Epidemic Early Access review

Dead Island: Epidemic Early Access review

It’s difficult to stop your inner-cynic sighing at the idea of Dead Island: Epidemic. Branded as “The world’s first ZOMBA", it’s the combination of Dead Island and Dota that nobody asked for and no-one wanted. This can’t be anything more than a filthy cash grab based on the fact that MOBAs are totally in right now, can it?

Not so. Unlike its undead population, Dead Island: Epidemic dares to have an original thought. What could have been yet another clone of the three-lane 5v5 design is actually a frantic to-and-fro capture point game. Not only that, but it also packs in a co-op mode and the original games’ weapon crafting for an exceptionally robust package.

I’m a little bit stunned. Dead Island: Epidemic is genuinely good.

Dead Island: Epidemic hits Steam Early Access and isn't free-to-play yet

Dead Island: Epidemic is out on Early Access: here's our Dead Island Epidemic review.

The latest addition to the list of Steam Early Access titles is Deep Silver and Sunlock Studios’ Dead Island spin-off, Dead Island: Epidemic. It hit the service today and is currently in closed beta, as well as being “fully functional," according to the devs.

The free-to-play MOBA is not free-to-play on Steam right now. While those invited into the closed beta don’t have to pay, others have to cough up some cash for an early look.

"Hold on to your butts": two weeks of Humble Daily Bundles have already begun

The groundswell goodwill that accompanied the launch of the original Humble Indie Bundle could never last forever, though its impact on the way games are sold might. The gratitude has since subsided into grumblings about bundle saturation - but an emphasis on quality control has ensured Humble themselves have managed to keep their heads above a sea of rival bundlers.

If there were anything capable of threatening that level of quality, it’d be a move from weekly to daily bundles. But the current Deep Silver deal suggests we can expect the usual standard.

Deep Silver confirms existence of Metro Redux, but is keeping quiet about what it is

With leaked images of a Metro title for PC and next-gen consoles, Metro Redux, doing the rounds, Deep Silver has decided to eschew the “no comment" malarky and actually say something about it. Not much, though.

Deep Silver confirms that Metro Redux is a thing, but that it’s not ready to give out more information. The leaked images are, it states, placeholders and out of date. Direct your squishy eyes below for the statement.

Everything explodes in the first Sacred 3 gameplay trailer

In the rush to find an appropriate dungeon to slaughter monsters in, most of the cast of Deep Silver’s Sacred 3 gameplay trailer forgot to put their clothes on, but it’s okay I guess, because we’re watching them from very far away. It’s also hard to spot people amid the fireworks display of magic and explosive attacks. But they are there. Killing things. Wearing not a lot.

I’m sensing a theme.

Moobs and boobs: Sacred 3 gets a reveal trailer

Hack n’ slash RPG Sacred is getting another installment, Deep Silver revealed today. Players can return to Ancaria for some fantasy co-op shenanigans, with drop in, drop out local and online multiplayer.

“The paramount development goal for Sacred 3 has been to create a seamless online and offline co-op experience", said Remy van Leeuwen, Brand Manager of Deep Silver. “By creating a game built around the central concept of co-op gameplay, we’re expanding the series to new audiences without compromising the rich lore and fantasy of the Sacred universe."

Dead Island Epidemic is bloody, cartoonish, and quite different from Dota

We cringed when we first heard that Deep Silver were calling Dead Island Epidemic a ZOMBA. The whole thing sounded like a cash grab, taking a well-known (though, not that well-respected) zombie franchise and stuffing it into a MOBA mould, cracking its FPS skeleton and resetting it to look a little bit more like Dota.

Deep Silver have now loosened their grip on the game’s details and what they’re saying actually makes DIE sound pretty darn enticing.

Metro: Last Light DLC guide

WIth Metro: Last Light going on sale today, it’s worth looking at the grab-bag of DLC associated with it. While all of it is pretty cheap, time is not, and only some of Last Light’s extra levels are really worth investigating. Some of these DLC packs are cringe-worthy, the kind of schlocky, half-baked ideas that give DLC a bad name and make things like season passes a bad value. On the other hand, some it is almost inspired, adding some of the systemic depth that Last Light’s campaign lacked.

So as you consider the Steam Autumn Sale, and are looking to return to the Metro, let’s look at what’s actually worth your time.

Evil in the Metro - The peculiar morality of the Metro series

I’m always surprised when I get the bad ending in Metro games.

In both the original Metro 2033 and now Metro: Last Light, I’ve played what I thought were pretty “moral" games. I’ve not killed lightly, though I’ve definitely gotten my hands dirty when I had to. I defended myself as best I could, helped people out when I could. But in the end, that’s not good enough. My character is not evil. The Metro games don’t really let you be evil. I’m just... human.
