E3 preview: Star Wars Battlefront’s Hoth leaves us cold

Let’s be completely clear: Star Wars: Battlefront is, on the face of it, the most exciting game in the world right now. It is a hype train we are happy to board. Just look at it! There’s the AT-ATs and everything! Luke shows up at the end for some reason! Oh wait, he’s wearing clothes he doesn’t on Hoth in the canon, I’ll… actually forget that it still looks brilliant!

That hype train, at E3, turned into a hype queue: hundreds of humans waiting for their chance to touch the game. I was with them. And it was… okay.

Star Wars Battlefront Heroes vs. Villains mode confirmed according to official website

EA and DICE have been quite the tease when it comes to exactly what’s inside the highly anticipated return of Star Wars Battlefront, but today we can add the return of one of the best game modes that the series could muster: Heroes vs. Villains.

At least, according to the spanish version of the official website for the game, which mentions the game mode explicitly.

EA will delay Star Wars: Battlefront if it’s not ready in November

From a business perspective, I imagine EA are pretty set on making sure Star Wars: Battlefront releases on the November 20th date they’ve set. Star Wars: The Force Awakens releases in cinemas just weeks later, and Star Wars fever will be ripe. But EA has said that Battlefront will release when it's ready, and if that requires a delay then that’s what will happen.

Star Wars Battlefront glimpsed running on PC in Tatooine footage

Traditionally when DICE show off games they’re running on PC to show off all those glorious little details. But when demoing Star Wars Battlefront at E3 this year, DICE used PS4 consoles. Great to see what the game’s all about, but not what we PC buffs are really looking for.

Looks like DICE realise they need to offer a bit of bait for the PC crowd, so the studio has tweeted a short video showing the game’s Tatooine level running on a computer.

Star Wars: Battlefront Missions trailer shows rebels surviving incoming Imperial scum

At EA’s E3 press conference we saw some truly stunning action from Star Wars: Battlefront’s 40-player multiplayer. But grand-scale war is not the only thing Battlefront is offering. Missions are a series of single player or co-op modes that bring a little more campaign flavour to the game. EA and DICE showed off a little of what to expect at the Sony press conference.

EA reveals Star Wars Battlefront gameplay, affronts canon with playable Luke fighting Vader on Hoth

EA showed off the most extensive gameplay footage get of Star Wars Battlefront, with a five minute gameplay trailer capturing the Battle of Hoth reinterpreted as a military shooter multiplayer level.

With waves of advancing, player-controlled walkers, player-flown snowspeeders and TIE Fighters whirling overhead, and tons of stormtroopers and Rebel infantry battling in ice trenches, it was pure catnip to Star Wars fans.

Explore Mirror's Edge Catalyst when it launches in February

Mirror’s Edge Catalyst only got given a name last week, but here we are, gobbling up the E3 trailer. Contained within is the familiar, like protagonist Faith, a seemingly gorgeous city run by foul corporations and, of course, parkour; there’s new stuff too, like a man who fancies pigeons and what looks like no-guns combat.

Soak it in below.

EA officially christen new Mirror's Edge game "Catalyst", but don't call it a sequel

Today on "Adventures in Videogame Branding" we have EA and DICE formally christening the next Mirror's Edge game "Mirror's Edge: Catalyst". They're also keen to point out that this is in no way Mirror's Edge 2, it's a totally different game… unless you liked the first game! In which case, yes! It is just like that thing you loved!

See and hear Battlefield 4's new audio obstruction system in action

DICE is busy at work with the impending Spring Patch, but that hasn’t stopped trying out and testing new goodies to look forward to. On the CTE Servers, DICE are testing a new “Audio Obstruction System", which will more accurately detect and modify in-game sounds depending on their origins and travel path.

It all sounds very complicated, but the video below the break decodes the inner workings so you can wrap your head around it.

Star Wars: Battlefront has no squads or classes

The core fear spreading through the galaxy right now is that Star Wars: Battlefront will be nothing more than a sci-fi skinned Battlefield. But if the fact that the game won’t feature iron-sight aiming doesn’t calm your fears perhaps this will: Battlefront won’t have squads, not will it have classes. The two elements vital to Battlefield will be completely absent from Star Wars: Battlefront.

Visceral Games helps DICE get Battlefield 4 multiplayer working at 120Hz tickrate

Battlefield 4 players are buzzing with excitement today as DICE, with the help of Visceral Games, are testing servers on the Community Test Environment (CTE), that have a whopping 120Hz tickrate. In short, this means the game’s server are sending and receiving updates at 120 times a second, resulting in a much more responsive experience.

It’s in very early testing though, so don’t expect it to hit live servers just yet.
