War is cheap in Battlefield 4: it's free for a week and on sale

Battlefield 4 has really struggled to shake off its terrible launch. Even after countless patches and updates, it’s still got that reputation. If you’ve been put off snatching it over fears that it remains broken, then now might be the time to find out if it’s improved. EA is offering up the game for free, for a week. That’s from now until August 14th.

You can download it from Origin and play the core game and it’s multiplayer without dropping a penny

Battlefield 4 patch will put an end to adamantium shield

Battlefield 4 patch will put an end to adamantium shield

Battlefield 4’s DLC, Dragon’s Teeth, brought with it EA’s very own version of Captain America’s adamantium shield. The ballistic shield could deflect bullets, sure, but it could also deflect armour-piercing tank shells and, with a single hit, kill other players. Battlefield’s next patch will see an end to that.

It’s not the only thing being changed. DICE have been looking at “how to decrease the feeling of getting killed when behind cover." Hopefully they’ve managed this by preventing of you getting killed when behind cover. Just one of the reasons we put Battlefield 4 on trial for being a broken, bug-ridden mess.

DICE has a long leash when it comes to Star Wars Battlefront

While Lucasfilm and Disney could be forgiven for being extremely protective of the Star Wars IP now that a third trilogy is in the works, DICE head honcho Karl Magnus Troedsson says that the studio has been given a lot of creative freedom with Star Wars Battlefront.

Don’t expect that to mean you’ll be able to fly a tauntaun into the Death Star. If only.

Battlefield 4: Dragon's Teeth adds a floating restaurant and a vanishing lake

Battlefield 4’s upcoming expansion, Dragon’s Teeth, has nothing to do with the Argonautica. There will be no soldiers sprouting from canines or hunts for golden fleeces. Knowing this, as I do, makes me extremely sad.

It will, however, feature gunfights on a floating island and the ability to drain a lake. That makes the lack of Greek mythology easier to stomach.

Battlefield Hardline "doesn't necessarily" signal annualised Battlefields, says EA's Söderlund

Battlefield Hardline "doesn't necessarily" signal annualised Battlefields, says EA's Söderlund

It might have felt like Battlefield 4 followed fast in the jetstream of Battlefield 3 last year - possibly because DICE didn’t reach for Bad Company or any of their other sub-brands, instead slapping on a new number.

But actually, 2012 was the only year we haven’t seen a new Battlefield game in the last seven. Which makes it a little odd to find EA Studios exec Patrick Söderlund defending the series against claims of annualisation. It’s not a publisher policy, he says, but a happy accident caused by EA letting its studios do what they want.

DICE are pondering early access for future Battlefield games

Visceral’s Steve Papoutsis announced from an E3 stage on Monday that the Battlefield Hardline beta would be open effective immediately. He said that doing so was new and exciting, and it felt like it - at least until we remembered that Hardline is out in October, and really ought to be getting on with its beta if it’s to have any chance of expunging its bugs before then.

But earlier access to Battlefield is something DICE are considering very seriously after Battlefield 4’s launch cock up late last year.

DICE went on a fieldtrip to Hoth to make Star Wars Battlefront as faithful as possible

DICE went on a fieldtrip to Hoth to make Star Wars Battlefront as faithful as possible

DICE are dedicated to Battlefront. They know that the series is beloved, and the people making it are as big Star Wars fans as you and I. That’s why they’ve not only been studying LucasFilm’s vast collection of movie props, but actually going on field trips to the planets themselves.

Well, not quite. But they have visited the filming locations of places like Hoth and Endor to ensure the feel of these maps will be as accurate as possible.

Have Faith: Mirror's Edge 2 concept art pops up ahead of E3 reveal

DICE’s approach to Mirror’s Edge since its release half a decade ago has been oddly tentative - as if they couldn’t quite remember ever having made a pretty parkour game, but were vaguely aware they were expected to make another one.

The Battlefield developers spent years perfecting a pitch to bring to their bosses at EA, and eventually announced a Mirror’s Edge 2 at E3 last year - but even then it was in the “early stages of development".

Perhaps we’ll see something more substantial at EA’s LA conference tonight. If not, the custodians of the Mirror’s Edge Facebook page have some questions to answer.

Battlefield 4's netcode is the subject of today's community tested update

Battlefield 4's netcode is the subject of today's community tested update

With all the Battlefield: Hardline talk, you might have forgotten that Battlefield 4 is still kicking about and still needs a bit of work. Today, DICE has rolled out an update to improve the game’s netcode, minimising the delay between input and action.

It’s the first update to be developed using the Community Test Environment, where premium members can test and provide feedback on developing features. “The number of changes possible in this update would be difficult to pull off without the continued support from our community, both through direct constructive feedback and telemetry data gathered on the CTE," said DICE.

Battlefield Hardline doesn't mean DICE will stop work on Battlefield 4

Since a game named Battlefield Hardline emerged prematurely from Battlelog’s database, we’ve seen quiet acknowledgements from EA and gushing missives from Visceral Games. The only people we haven’t heard from are DICE - the custodians of the entire Battlefield series, until now.

“I want to be sure you all understand that introducing Hardline in no way means we’re done working on Battlefield 4," said DICE president Karl Magnus Troedsson today. “Nothing could be further from the truth."

Troedsson outlined a future for Battlefield 4 built on continued support, mystery new features, an expanded community test environment, and something that community has been clamouring for - a major netcode patch.

Battlefield 4 falls further as microtransactions appear

It was never going to look good. An expensive game with premium membership options also getting microtransactions. That’s what’s happening in Battlefield 4 today, with DICE and EA making a move that was predicted before the game even launched.

You can now throw money at the rickety game for the privilege of getting Battlepacks. DICE calls it a “shortcut to catch up with [your] friends on the Battlefield." A premium shortcut.

SWAT's going on 'ere, then: Battlelog update unearths references to rumoured cop-themed Battlefield: Hardline

Something acronymed BFH is coming to Xbox 360, PS3, Xbox One, PS4 and PC, according to icons buried in today’s Battlelog update.

What is it? Nobody really knows. But Battlefield redditors have cross-referenced the icons with the codename of a supposed SWAT-styled EA shooter expected later this year: Battlefield Hardline.
