DICE: "we lost player trust" because of Battlefield 4 launch

It is a matter of public record that Battlefield 4 had a shonky launch, with players, developers and publishers now all in agreement that the DICE shooter touched down with all the grace and elegance of a swan landing on a motorway because it's stupid swan-brain thinks roads look like rivers. Get it together, swans.

But while swans refuse to change their ways or admit to their mistakes, an introspective DICE are admitting that the woeful launch and subsequent issues that have plagued Battlefield 4 have harmed player trust in the series.

Before the Fall Patch: long-awaited Battlefield 4 fixes due today on Origin

DICE will implement a “fairly massive" list of Battlefield 4 fixes today. You can tell the 1.16GB update’s a biggie because it has a name rather than a number: the Fall Patch will address many of the issues that’ve most irked players in recent months, including problems with the HUD, ‘netcode’, player movement and peering through reticules.

Visceral on Battlefield Hardline: "we take shipping a working game pretty seriously"

We can all remember the bug-ridden launch of Battlefield 4, which thankfully has gotten a lot better these days. DICE sure does, and it also extends to Visceral - the developers of the upcoming Battlefield Hardline. Speaking to GameRevolution at this year’s Tokyo Game Show, creative director Ian Milham wants to reassure us that this time it will be different.

“What you're basically asking is, 'Is your game going to work?' and the answer is yes, it's gonna work."

Battlefield 4 "Autumn Patch" sheds all the bugs; further improves netcode

It’s time for some spring autumn cleaning in Battlefield 4, and there’s hefty long patch notes to go with it. Most notable is the further improvement to the infamous netcode, which is now set automatically to high as default to all users. A slew of game modes are also being added to Obliteration Competitive sub-game mode. Of course, it wouldn’t be a proper patch without weapon changes too.

Battlefield 4: Final Stand evokes memories of Battlefield 2142

With Final Stand, Battlefield 4’s upcoming piece of DLC, DICE is presenting their vision of the wars of tomorrow while also looking back to Battlefield 2142.

“With Final Stand, we knew from the start that we wanted to evolve the Battlefield experience and offer weapons and vehicles that behave differently than anything else on the battlefield," write DICE’s Kristoffer Bergqvist and David Sirland. “Taking place on the arctic landscape of Russia, where the scientists of today are experimenting with technology that will define the battlefields of tomorrow."

War is cheap in Battlefield 4: it's free for a week and on sale

Battlefield 4 has really struggled to shake off its terrible launch. Even after countless patches and updates, it’s still got that reputation. If you’ve been put off snatching it over fears that it remains broken, then now might be the time to find out if it’s improved. EA is offering up the game for free, for a week. That’s from now until August 14th.

You can download it from Origin and play the core game and it’s multiplayer without dropping a penny

Battlefield 4 patch will put an end to adamantium shield

Battlefield 4 patch will put an end to adamantium shield

Battlefield 4’s DLC, Dragon’s Teeth, brought with it EA’s very own version of Captain America’s adamantium shield. The ballistic shield could deflect bullets, sure, but it could also deflect armour-piercing tank shells and, with a single hit, kill other players. Battlefield’s next patch will see an end to that.

It’s not the only thing being changed. DICE have been looking at “how to decrease the feeling of getting killed when behind cover." Hopefully they’ve managed this by preventing of you getting killed when behind cover. Just one of the reasons we put Battlefield 4 on trial for being a broken, bug-ridden mess.

DICE has a long leash when it comes to Star Wars Battlefront

While Lucasfilm and Disney could be forgiven for being extremely protective of the Star Wars IP now that a third trilogy is in the works, DICE head honcho Karl Magnus Troedsson says that the studio has been given a lot of creative freedom with Star Wars Battlefront.

Don’t expect that to mean you’ll be able to fly a tauntaun into the Death Star. If only.

Battlefield 4: Dragon's Teeth adds a floating restaurant and a vanishing lake

Battlefield 4’s upcoming expansion, Dragon’s Teeth, has nothing to do with the Argonautica. There will be no soldiers sprouting from canines or hunts for golden fleeces. Knowing this, as I do, makes me extremely sad.

It will, however, feature gunfights on a floating island and the ability to drain a lake. That makes the lack of Greek mythology easier to stomach.

Battlefield Hardline "doesn't necessarily" signal annualised Battlefields, says EA's Söderlund

Battlefield Hardline "doesn't necessarily" signal annualised Battlefields, says EA's Söderlund

It might have felt like Battlefield 4 followed fast in the jetstream of Battlefield 3 last year - possibly because DICE didn’t reach for Bad Company or any of their other sub-brands, instead slapping on a new number.

But actually, 2012 was the only year we haven’t seen a new Battlefield game in the last seven. Which makes it a little odd to find EA Studios exec Patrick Söderlund defending the series against claims of annualisation. It’s not a publisher policy, he says, but a happy accident caused by EA letting its studios do what they want.

DICE are pondering early access for future Battlefield games

Visceral’s Steve Papoutsis announced from an E3 stage on Monday that the Battlefield Hardline beta would be open effective immediately. He said that doing so was new and exciting, and it felt like it - at least until we remembered that Hardline is out in October, and really ought to be getting on with its beta if it’s to have any chance of expunging its bugs before then.

But earlier access to Battlefield is something DICE are considering very seriously after Battlefield 4’s launch cock up late last year.
