CCP producer wants to empower EVE Online players and bring in new ones

EVE Online has, since its inception, been a game where players are in control. While most MMOs are heavily scripted and players can only affect the world in fleeting, temporary ways, New Eden is filled with player driven stories and events.

But EVE’s new executive producer, Andie Nordgren - previously a technical producer - wants to empower players even more. In an interview with Polygon, she explained that she wants to give players even more of the universe, giving them more control and hopefully expanding the community.

Eve Online Crius expansion brings enough industrial change to yield "good-old fashioned space conflict"

Pew! Someone must have shot Eve Online’s next expansion with an Asteroids laser, because it’s split into ten smaller expando-rocks set to spin out across the next year. The first, Kronos, hurtled into one of the best PC space games last month. CCP’s radars indicate its follow-up is on a similar collision course. Named Crius, it’s due to make shockwaves in Eve’s industrial sector come July 22.

“As the fuel that powers the ‘infernal machine’ of harvesting, creation and destruction, the industry changes will catalyze player-driven action, create new opportunities for veterans and new players alike," write CCP. “And most likely start some good old-fashioned space conflict."

We're giving away copies of EVE: True Stories, so you can own a bit of New Eden history

EVE Online has no dearth of fascinating stories, told and retold on forums, in interviews and in EVE itself. The best of these tales of dismantled empires, betrayals and galactic wars were submitted and voted for by the community, with the possibility that some of them would become the inspiration for comics, books and TV shows set in the EVE Universe.

The EVE True Stories hardcover graphic novel spins one such tale, where one man dismantled what had been one of EVE’s most powerful alliances at the heart of the Second Great War. In a day, a director of the Band of Brothers alliance defected to Goonswarm and wiped out his alliance, ending the war.

And we’ve got two copies sitting on Tim’s coffee table just waiting to be won by you lovely folk.

CCP hit with more layoffs; another 49 employees lose their jobs

It is not a great time to be an employee at CCP. The EVE Online developer confirmed that it has laid off another 49 employees, this time in the Reykjavik office, who were part of the publishing side of the company.

"Development teams and plans for EVE Online, EVE: Valkyrie, DUST 514, and 'Project Legion' are not impacted by the restructuring," the studio explained in a statement earlier today.

CCP are "playing with the big boys" to bring Eve Online to TV

For every Eve player, there’s are nine observers cheering on their slow-burn sneakery and occasional outright villainy from relative safety on the outside.

Beyond the few who become subscribers, it’s been tough for CCP to profit directly from that interest - but they’re finding ways. Their Eve: True Stories comic with Dark Horse was the first step, and the next is a TV series. Directed by Icelandic 2 Guns director Baltasar Kormakur, it will see the developers work with “the big boys" of the small screen to retell the greatest crimes in Eve’s history.

Dare we speculatively invoke the letters H, B and O?

History in the making: Andrew Groen's Eve Online chronicle funded seven times over

Freelance games writer Andrew Groen asked for $12,500 to fund A History of the Great Empires of Eve Online. Between its three low tiers and absent stretch goals, it was a modest campaign by current Kickstarter standards - and he hoped that it might end up overfunded by $200 or so.

But as the campaign drew to a close over the weekend, Eve pilots had answered his good intentions with $95,729 - a total large enough to fund a “deluxe" hardcover edition.

Nonfiction future history - How Andrew Groen is Kickstarting EVE's first great history

In the months and weeks leading up to his Kickstarter for A History of the Great Empires of Eve Online, freelance writer Andrew Groen was terrified that it was all about to go wrong. That he was about to watch everything crumble and vanish, the way it has for so many of the MMO power-players he is writing about.

“I had this feeling that someone else was just going to swoop in and take it from me," he says. “The analogy that I used to describe how I was feeling to my wife was, ‘I feel like I just sat down at a dinner party to this giant feast. And everybody else is ignoring it. And I'm the only one who knows it's there. And I'm starting to eat it, and take little bites of it... and I'm just praying nobody else just comes and starts eating it and taking all the food away."

With $75,000 in Kickstarter funding for his book, Groen may have his banquet to himself. Now he just has to prepare one of his own for hundreds of expectant backers and a community of some of the most demanding and exacting MMO players in the world.

EVE Online: PLEX Activation Codes kill off EVE Time Codes and usurp their position

EVE Time Codes are a thing of the past, CCP announced today. ETCs have been sold by various outlets for a good long time, but they’ve declined in use thanks to PLEX. Since ETCs and PLEX basically served the same core purpose, giving more game time, CCP are doing away with ETC to make things less confusing. EVE? Less confusing? Madness.

From the start of this month, CCP began distributing PLEX Activation Codes to partners instead of ETCs. PACs enable pilots to purchase PLEX, between 1 and 28 on the account management screen. And the cost will be the same as the price of PLEX sold by CCP itself.

Huge super capital fight in EVE Online obliterates 500 billion ISK in ships

New Eden has once again been the scene of a huge engagement, this time the result of a clever bait by the Black Legion alliance. Using one of their precious Super Carriers - one of the biggest and most expensive ships in EVE Online - they managed to bait the RAZOR alliance into a trap. It wasn’t long before the event escalated into a full blown Super Capital ship warfare from both coalitions of CFC and N3.

It was a bloody battle with over 500 billion ISK ($10,000) worth of ships destroyed, and luckily I was online and nearby to view the whole thing go down.

Looking back at EVE Fanfest 2014: space trucks, MMA fighters and virtual reality

The last time I played EVE Online was five years ago. I was in a corporation whose name I can no longer remember. My job was to drive a huge freighter ship around an asteroid belt so that smaller mining ships could deposit their hauls and get back to shooting rocks with their lasers. I’d do this for hours, collecting ore, opening up my cargo hold to accept my colleagues’ valuable dirt, warping back to the nearest station to dump it and then returning to the belt to fill up again. I was a truck driver. In space. An interstellar Eddie Stobbart.

CCP "permanently remove" three Eve players behind Reykjavik monument vandalism

Last week, CCP unveiled a monument built in tribute to Eve Online and its pilots. Four days later, somebody scratched out the name of another player they had beef with.

CCP have called the incident an “insult to the entire community" - and “permanently removed" the individuals responsible from their playerbase.

“We do not tolerate this kind of behavior," they said.

It's not the size that counts: EVE Online does away with big expansions

CCP is doing away with gigantic expansions in EVE Online. Where once massive updates changed the entire universe, introducing new systems and features all at once, CCPs new approach will see the online space sim continuously updated with smaller content packs.

Ten of these updates are planned over the next year, compared to the 20 larger expansions that have built up EVE over the better part of the last decade. The first of these new updates, Kronos, is due out on June 3rd, and it’s one for the industrialists.

CCP condemn Eve monument vandalism: "What's happened is absolutely disgusting"

Eve players have finally broken CCP. The Icelandic development team see themselves as caretakers to the game’s big personalities, and in the past have been happy to hold up their hands and watch their in-game Jitas burn.

But one player has found the company’s limits, after scratching out the name of a fellow pilot they disliked on Reykjavik’s new Eve monument.

“We will not tolerate this," said community manager CCP Falcon.

What the hell is Project Legion? And is it replacing Dust 514?

What the hell is Project Legion? And is it replacing Dust 514?

Project Legion is a prototype free-to-play FPS from EVE Online developers CCP. It's a PC game based on Dust 514, the studio's PlayStation 3 exclusive shooter, and builds on the foundation that game set down: competitive scrapping on planet surfaces, the ability for events in EVE Online to impact on battles, and a player driven economy.

On paper it really does sound like a replacement to Dust 514, though the developers at CCP are enthusiastically playing down that notion. Rather, they say that it's an evolution of Dust and that both games will continue to exist independently of one another. Dust 514 players are naturally concerned that their game may have just been made redundant.

I've spoken with Dust 514's executive producer Jean-Charles Gaudechon, aka CCP Rouge, who joined the studio several months ago. Here's what he had to say about CCP's latest title.

I showed my EVE Online spaceship designs to CCP, here's what they thought

EVE Fanfest 2014 has entered its second day, with super important keynote presentations about the future of the space sandbox MMO still to come. Yesterday I flew a virtual spaceship in EVE Valkyrie, and in the last hour CCP announced a PC version of Dust 514, but today I had the chance to talk to Josh Bayer, one of EVE Online's game designers.

Bayer is responsible for overseeing the development of all of the spaceships in EVE Online, so with that in mind I presented him with my own personal ship designs, which I had carefully doodled twenty minutes before our meeting. Here's what he had to say.
