Amazingly Rust’s community aren't drawing cocks on signs. It’s all Salvador Dali instead. Mostly.

Recently Facepunch introduced a new element to Rust that allows players to create their own signs and nail them to the world. This was probably done with braced arms and a hesitant smile. Surely, surely all the players would do is draw cocks all over the place. That’s what gaming is, right?

Not so. It appears that Rust’s community are a little more sophisticated than that. Salvador Dali’s The Fourth Dimension is more their kinda thing.

Rust made in a month about 40% of what Garry's Mod made in nine years

Rust doesn’t usually take hold overnight. It clings to the underside of things, invisible to those who aren’t looking for it, and spreads slowly while nobody’s looking.

That’s sort of how Facepunch expected Rust’s alpha to go - they hoped they’d built a slowburn, underground hit of Steam’s early access underside. Instead, the game hopped conspicuously to the uppermost rungs of Steam’s top seller’s list, where it remains. Facepunch were “knocked on their arses" by sales figures - and now say that Rust has dwarfed sales of the game that funded it: Garry’s Mod.

It's no surprise that our Matt says you should buy the game in his Rust review.

Rust to lose zombies, gain defence solutions; Facepunch "knocked on [their] arses" by sales

Rust sales have been “strong" since its release via Steam Early Access - silly strong. Better than Garry’s Mod, and better even than incredi-popular 2D sandbox Starbound

“We really have been knocked on our arses by sales," said Facepunch’s Garry Newman. “Our plan was to release the alpha on to Steam in a low-key way and slowly build up steam until the game was in a decent state. But our player counts have exploded our wildest dreams."

First priority has been to work with GSP to bring more servers online, and to squash residual DDOS problems (“for the most part they seem to have subsided"). Next comes the removal of zombies, and providing players with more means to defend themselves.

Our Matt recounted his issues with zombies in our Rust review - they can attack you “from about five feet away".

Rust is out on Early Access; here's our Rust review.

Thank goodness for honest toil. In lieu of anything work-related to worry about, the last week has seen humankind engage in a multitude of sins. Many chose to leave the TV on long enough to witness 1995’s Casper the Friendly Ghost in its entirety; an oddball few decided to spend their post-Christmas period pummeling the servers of Garry ‘Garry’s Mod’ Newman’s Lord of the Flies-ish survival sim, Rust, into inertia.

“We know it’s not totally our fault," wrote Garry on Friday, “but at the same time it is. If you have exploits then people are going to exploit them. That’s just how the world works."

Garry’s Mod hops over to SteamPipe next week

Steam has nearly finished a huge tablecloth-swiping operation that has seen its entire catalogue switched over to a new content delivery system. If you play Garry’s Mod, it’ll mean good things: patches issued direct from the developer without Valve as bottleneck, and more expeditious downloads. But it’ll also probably mean a couple of teething troubles.
