Space Hulk: Deathwing footage finds Warhammer 40k bolted to Unreal Engine 4

There’s going to be a Warhammer FPS, for the first time since Fire Warrior proved even the most videogamey ideas can pale in execution. It’s built by E.Y.E: Divine Cybermancy types Streum On Studio, and is growing into an ambitious, squad-based tactical beast of a game.

Will it emerge from the Warp horribly mutated, or righteous in victory? This in-engine trailer seeks to suggest the latter.

Paint the board Chaos Black with Warhammer 40,000: Chess - Regicide

PC gamers of a certain age still speak in reverent tones of Battle Chess, the ‘90s digital interpretation of the ancient game which livened up piece capture with violently animated tussles.

Perhaps Battle Chess has found a spiritual successor in unlikely Warhammer 40k tie-in Regicide - an adaptation of the board game which features a plotted single player campaign and incorporates stunt-choreographed, motion-captured “merciless kill and death animations".

I just need a little: Space Wolf - the upcoming Warhammer 40k XCOM-ish CCG

Passing motorists on the M1 between junctions 24 and 25 a year or so back might have noticed the lightning rod that struck Games Workshop’s Nottingham HQ. For it was in that moment that the Warhammer custodians realised the games license they’d been jealously guarding wasn’t a finite resource. They could hand it out to whichever developers they liked, they reasoned, as many times as they liked - so long as the games didn’t step on each others’ toes.

The results so far may not have been a victory for quality control, but we’re certainly not wanting for variety. Beyond Full Control’s Space Hulk adaptation, Blood Bowl 2, Slitherine’s 40k strategy game, the Eternal Crusade MMO and whatever it is Creative Assembly are working on, there’s also a grid-based tactical card game to look tentatively forward to. Here's its first trailer.

Space Hulk: First Impressions

Space Hulk, the Games Workshop board game conversion, is now out. Pre-release copies to review weren’t available, so we’re working a bit on the hop, but Julian and I have both played it a little bit, and wanted to give you some of our early thoughts.

Frankly, it’s not great. Not even good.

Games Workshop latest: Chainsaw Warrior comes to PC

More than 20 years after anybody dared hope for an adaptation, Games Workshop’s bloodiest board game in a crowded field is hopping to PC. A suicide mission for one player, Chainsaw Warrior will ask you to face overwhelming odds in the vain hope of saving New York from a larger-than-usual outpouring of zombies and mutants.

Warhammer 40,000: Eternal Crusade Preview — War and Promises

Warhammer 40,000: Eternal Crusade Preview — War and Promises

I’m going to open this article by establishing something: I absolutely love the Warhammer 40,000 setting. There is something so absolutely imaginative about the system which begat something that now sounds as generic as “space marines."

I mean, let’s look at it: these space marines are actually in service of an emperor who is basically dead, but kept on a bizarre life-support throne which has allowed his consciousness to protect mankind from the forces of Chaos for tens of thousands of years. Except the throne is breaking down, and when it does, his decaying body will finally snuff out. And no one can fix it, because no one understands how technology works any more — in fact technology is treated as religion, not to be understood but to be worshipped.

It’s bonkers. The world of Warhammer 40,000 is bonkers, and very, very dark — after all, if Chaos doesn’t eventually kill mankind, the Tyranids, a countless horde of hive-mind aliens, will. And honestly? If you want to work in that kind of context, that kind of thing has to touch some part of your brain that just thrills you. That’s certainly the case with Miguel Caron and Behavior Interactive, who are working on Warhammer 40K: Eternal Crusade, a massive online shooter.

Dawn of War sequel a "strong possibility" from Relic despite Sega sale

It’s been three months since Relic were snapped up by Sega just as the jaws of hell closed around THQ, and we’re still conducting a slow and slightly upsetting headcount to see how many of the developers’ best-loved names have made it out with them. Company of Heroes was reported “intact" just days after the publisher switcheroo was announced. Homeworld fared less well - the venerable space strategy series was lost in transit, returned to sender and, we learned yesterday, resold to a new and unlikely owner. Last but not least, probably recovered from a dank corner of a removal truck in a cardboard box marked ‘Catering’, is Dawn of War. Which, if Relic have anything to do with it, aten't dead yet.

Warhammer 40K turn-based strategy game in the works at Slitherine

Those dastardly Slitherine kids have got their hands on the Warhammer 40K license. Wait, no, it’s not anything to do with Harry Potter, you say? They’re the folk that published Unity of Command as well as a large gaggle of other strategy titles? You’re not actually an existent entity but just a rhetorical persona that I’m able to bounce questions off in an illuminating fashion?

Well, I’ll be.

Blood Bowl: Star Coach gives the Warhammer bloodsport the Football Manager treatment

Being a professional athlete in a sport like Blood Bowl is quite the hazardous profession, if you're not eaten alive by the opposition then you're either beaten to death, run into the ground until dead, or impaled on the goal posts. It's just not a safe place to be. Yet, if you can't resist the smell of freshly killed sportsman in the morning then you may be better off going into a management position.

That's just what Cyanide are letting you do in Blood Bowl: Star Coach, a newly announced free-to-play browser game that gives Blood Bowl the Football Manager treatment.

Details below.

Space Hulk screenshots reveal the board game transmuted with turn-based tactics intactSpace Hulk is a new adaptation of the well-worn boardgame - the one that has fully-fledged humans scream in terror at pieces of plastic - for PC and Mac. It’s made by a somebody called Full Control who, and here’s the sound of a synapse forming a link in my brain, made the competent-if-linear XCOM-alike Tactical Soldier: Undead Rising for iOS.

Here’s what it looks like. Never has the onset of claustrophobia been so readily welcomed.

Warhammer: Total War now may be a thing; Creative Assembly acquire license for Warhammer series, Relic still have 40K

Bloody hell. Creative Assembly and SEGA have struck a deal with Games Workshop for multiple games set in Warhammer’s fantasy universe. A new development team has been set up at the West Sussex Total War studio and has already begun work on the first. We’re dubbing it Gnome: Total War.

Update: We have confirmed that Dawn of War forgers Relic still have their 40K license, as suspected. Phew.
