Mojang release 10 months' work in Minecraft 1.8: The Bountiful Update

What have you done in the last 300 days? Probably lots of different little things. The Minecraft dev team at Mojang have done one, big thing: put together the Bountiful Update.

Minecraft 1.8 was published to the Minecraft launcher today. It’s taken longer than any other update in the game’s history, and incorporates a full-scale rebuild of its infrastructure. That’s the equivalent of umpteen creative mode cathedrals.

Minecraft Bukkit project lead quits, Mojang take over

The team lead of Minecraft mod Bukkit attempted to shut down the project this morning, over concerns with Mojang’s pay-to-win crackdown and his ability to continue distributing the mod. But within minutes, Mojang had quashed his worries about EULAs and picked up development of Bukkit themselves.

“Warren over at bukkit seems to have forgotten that the project was bought by Mojang over two years ago," tweeted Minecraft lead Jeb, “and isn’t his to discontinue."

Minecraft staffer and original Bukkit lead Dinnerbone will now see the mod through to its 1.8 release.

Come on in, the water’s lovely. For now. At present, Minecraft’s oceans are occupied only by the squid - which look alarmingly toothy, but are significantly less threatening than the possibility of forgetting about your bubble bar and drowning.

That’s to change. The new ranged mob Jeb is working on will kill squid. And it’ll kill players too.

“On hard difficulty a full diamond armor is recommended," he warns.

Mojang to bring Cake Defense, The Walls and more to Minecraft Realms users as "mini games"

Minecraft Realms is the online service Mojang pitch at families not stubborn enough to work through the arcane process of setting up and running servers. For a monthly subscription, Realms players - mostly parents - get access to one of Mojang’s secure servers and can invite 20-odd friends to deface a new world.

That’s probably not for you texture pack-savvy, adventure map-happy lot. But some of Minecraft’s best-loved maps are likely to be opened up to a brand new audience with Realms’ new “mini game" option.

Mammoth Minecraft world generator update to bring "a whole bunch of new biomes"

As I clicked my way onto Jens ‘Jeb’ Bergensten’s latest blog post on biomes, I mused idly about Minecraft’s viney jungles, the last drastically new environment I remember being added to the game. Turns out that was the last new biome of any kind, introduced in March 2012. Nothing particularly exciting has happened to the world generator since. That’s to change, though. All at once, in the near future.

It's been an exciting week. After we got some hints a few weeks ago that the next update would be focused around biomes, Jeb has tweeted a number of screenshots of new landscapes in the game. The first was the image we shared with you last week - a spruced-up version of the extreme hills biome. Nothing too crazy there.

Then there was this picture, a huge set of mesas made of hardened clay in all sorts of colours, layered like the Grand Canyon. That image was followed by this map, which appears to show a number of new biome colours. Reddit user viGnoS has dived into it, taking some guesses at what the new biomes might entail - groves, taiga and even a volcano perhaps?

I spent about 10 minutes just now trying to work out precisely how Most Influential Markus Persson and Jens Bergensten are, but it seems Time have de-numbered their list. Instead, according to Will Wright and a magazine who have been doing this for a very long time, the two men of Minecraft are ‘Titans’.

After many enticing updates, Mojang have told us that the Redstone Update will be coming our way sometime this month, perhaps even sometime very, very soon. Here's a breakdown of all the most exciting features the team have said they're working on, plus a little speculation as to what else might still sneak its way into Minecraft 1.5. Is this really the definitive story of Minecraft? A review of Minecraft: The Story of Mojang

A year before Kickstarter became a household name among video gamers, 2 Player Productions were comfortably successful in their attempt to use the site to crowdfund a feature-length documentary about the creators of Minecraft. Nearly two years on, a hundred minute documentary is the result. A mixture of montages and talking heads (and featuring some of the games industry’s most famous figures), it looks outward much more than it looks inward and is more a film about the reach and the impact of Minecraft than it is the game itself, or the studio that created it.

But is it good? And is it worth watching? Only if you’re a Minecraft fan, because The Story of Mojang feels like a film for fans and perhaps even by fans. While that satisfies someone like me, I don’t know if it’s going to convert you.
