Why pro StarCraft 2 has rejected the classic maps

Why pro StarCraft 2 has rejected the classic maps

If you tune into any StarCraft tournament this month or next, you’ll note that everyone is playing on the same map pool we’ve had since midsummer. In fact, just last week, the DreamHack Open Twitter account reassured viewers that DreamHack winter would be decided using the Season 3 WCS map pool.

What’s striking about all this is that every single tournament organizer has rejected Blizzard’s Season 4 ladder map pool, which was compiled via fan vote from a list of StarCraft 2’s oldest and best-known competitive maps. While fans might wax nostalgic about the days of Daybreak and Ohana, the pro scene seems to be saying that the past is best left to memory.

Minecraft's city of Adamantis: one player, three months and sixty million blocks

Minecraft's city of Adamantis: one player, three months and sixty million blocks

The Minecraft community is an extraordinary thing and we get to see impressive, imaginative builds every. Then, once in a blue moon, something truly extraordinary comes along, something that sends us reeling with its scale and its style. The city of Adamantis is just such a build, a gorgeous, enormous, elaborate and multi-tiered creation that's more like a palace than anything else.

What's more, it's the work of just one person and, much as Rome wasn't built in a day, Adamantis didn't come quickly. It took creator jamdelaney1 three months to complete, during which some sixty million blocks were laid down. Sixty million. Click through to see more images, a video and to just, y'know, be amazed.

This Minecraft machine takes the tedium out of fishing

Comment
This Minecraft machine takes the tedium out of fishingI see clever new machines and exciting, elaborate constructions coming out of the Minecraft community all the time and I'm constantly inspired. But today I want to show you something I think is extra-special yet also remarkably simple, and it's that simplicity that has impressed me.

A Minecrafter has modified a fishing machine made by one of his peers and, in doing so, has made what is usually a slightly tedious task into something that's now quick and very, very easy. He's also done it with a very economical design. He's also, quite obviously, a kid.

Donkey Kong comes to Minecraft in this crafty custom map

You can now experience the arcade classic Donkey Kong, including its introductory cut scene, by playing this novel Minecraft map and climbing your way towards Pauline, the damsel in distress. To play it you'll need the latest Minecraft snapshot, version 13w06a, and you may notice a few minor deviations between the original game and this re-imagining.

You're no longer avoiding falling barrels, for example. Instead, they're now pigs in minecarts.

The Ocarina of Time project: another recreation of a Zelda game within Minecraft

There's something about Minecraft that inspires many players not to build, but to rebuild or to recreate, and redditor kevinbonbon is just one of these people. The Ocarina of Time project is one person's attempt to create the world of the famous N64 game inside of Minecraft and, though it's still at an early stage, it's coming along well, as you can see.

That said, it's certainly not the first time a Minecraft player has taken inspiration from the Zelda series.

This Minecraft basketball court may just be a work of genius

Comment
This Minecraft basketball court may just be a work of geniusThis is the work of a group of Minecraft fans called the Farlanders and it's one of the most inventive maps I've in quite some time. Making use of the new hoppers, storage minecarts and comparators that have been included in the latest snapshots, the basketball automatically assigns team members, tracks the score for you and even launches appropriately-coloured victory fireworks.

The machinery that takes care of this is hidden well out of the way of the players and ticks away beside or underneath the court, so all you need do is play. The whole thing even resets itself when the match is won. It's a marvel of Minecraft design and engineering and is practically a total conversion, a basketball minigame. Click through to see the video explaining exactly how it works.

Minecraft fan will recreate the entire Earth to 1:1500 scale, may take some timeThat's lentebriesje's plan, anyway, using the Worldpainter tool to create the terrain, as well as heightmaps borrowed from the National Geophysical Data Center. So far lentebriesje has already made parts of Europe, Australia and the Americas available online, though because if it's remoteness there's no Hawaii yet. Like Asia, the enormous expanse of the Pacific Ocean is still to come.

How big is The War Z's map?

Comments 26
How big is The War Z's map?So we now know that The War Z only has one map, despite Hammerpoint having initially advertised multiple maps of between 100 and 400 square kilometres each. That's fine, a misunderstanding that's been corrected. The store page now correctly lists just one map, Colorado, though Hammerpoint still claim that it's 100 square kilometres in area. It certainly doesn't feel that big, so it's probably wise to check.

Would you like to know how big The War Z's map really is? 50 square kilometres? 75 square kilometres?

Black Ops 2 leak rumoured to reveal multiplayer and campaign map details

Black Ops 2 leak rumoured to reveal multiplayer and campaign map detailsHaving placed my ear firmly against my BT Homehub, I can tell you that word on the internet is that a near complete list of Black Ops 2 multiplayer maps has been leaked. The list has allegedly been extracted from the Black Ops 2 internal beta and contains the names and descriptions of 14 multiplayer maps, which I've dutifully reproduced for you below. Is it authentic? Is it lies? It's missing the Nuketown map, and that's been confirmed to appear, but it does contain the names of maps shown at this year's Gamescom. It could go either way, really. Take a look.

Deathcraft II transforms Left 4 Dead into MinecraftHere's something you might've overlooked amidst all the Cold Stream launch excitement: Valve are currently featuring Left 4 Dead community campaign Deathcraft II, a total conversion of the co-op shooter that transforms it into a zombie-ridden Minecraft world. What happens when Valve 'feature' community campaigns? They get hosted on official dedicated servers is what, meaning now's a good time to download the Deathcraft II campaign and smack some low-res zombies.

Are Modern Warfare 2 maps coming to Modern Warfare 3?

Comment
Are Modern Warfare 2 maps coming to Modern Warfare 3?Oh YouTube, is there anything you won't leak? Two new MW3 map names have allegedly been spotted floating around a map list in a private game. The sighting follows the 1.15 update on Playstation 3, and sheds light on the next DLC drop. The maps, titled Terminal and Shipbreaker, disappear once selected however, like coy, sexy ghosts. Terminal shares its name with a Modern Warfare 2 map, suggesting the return of that game's finest death-arenas in Modern Warfare 3. Which is nice.
