Minecrafting 153: Elder Guardians attack!

The first new hostile mob in a long time has been added to Minecraft in this week's snapshot, as well as some new blocks that liven up the dead oceans and a massive stack of bugfixes and engine rewrites.

Meanwhile, the community has been its usual active self. We've got a whole range of different house designs for you to take a look at, as well as a semi-automatic TNT cannon and a beautiful custom map called The Shores of Albion. Shall we begin?

Minecrafting 152: Burning Flesh

Phew, what a week. The early rumbles over Mojang restricting how server owners can make money have turned into a bit of an earthquake. But now there's some clarity over exactly what you are allowed to do and what you're not.

The rest of the community, however, has been just getting on with being its usual amazing self. This week, we've got a single-player world powered by flesh, a great tutorial on A-frames, some D-Day inspired terrain and an island with a secret. Shall we begin?

As promised last week, the name-changing patch is here. Minecraft 1.7.6 has been released, and it was swiftly followed by Minecraft 1.7.7 to fix some bugs. The aim of the patch is to prepare the world for the forthcoming ability for Minecraft users to change their names - a much-requested feature.

The rhythm of Minecraft patch development is reassuring. After a major patch is released, the Mojang team tends to go quiet while the community goes crazy. As the community starts to quieten down, the first few glimpses of the next patch are seen, and snapshots start arriving packed with exciting new features.

Minecrafting 101: back to school with Minecraft Harry Potter

Welcome to my first Minecrafting diary! This will be a chronicle of the many, many adventures that I have in the world of Minecraft. Some week’s I’ll be telling you about what I’m building, whatever project I’ve currently lost myself in, and other weeks I’ll be adventuring, exploring or maybe even getting a little nostalgic about my pixellated pastime.

Before I start, I have a confession: I haven’t done a great deal of building in Minecraft lately, not for a few weeks now. Sure, I’ve tried out mods and texture packs and custom maps, but I haven’t really got myself stuck into anything in a little while and I fear I might’ve lost my edge. How am I going to start a diary of my Minecraft adventures?

All this gets me thinking that I might need to go back to school, so to speak, and then that gets me thinking about a certain Minecraft server I had a quick look at many moons ago: Pottercraft, the Harry Potter server. How’s it doing now, I wonder...
