Minecraft has now sold 17 million copies on PC

The newly Microsoft-owned Minecraft passed 17 million sales over the weekend, Mojang announced in characteristically casual fashion this morning.

“Not sure if this continues to be noteworthy," tweeted Minecraft Realms developer Marc Watson.

Of course, Minecraft sales are noteworthy as long as we can drudge up the figures of famous games it's outsold. Let's get to it.

Minecraft 1.8.1 will improve stability, make the ender dragon killable again

There’s a reason Mojang dubbed Minecraft 1.8 the Bountiful Update. It was the culmination of 10 months’ work, stuffed with exciting infrastructure rewrites and rabbits. But in the way of all updates, it’s yielded an equally exciting number of bugs and breakages.

Mojang have pushed out a pre-release version of 1.8.1, which they reckon will go a long way to solving stability issues and a whole host of other more colourful problems.

British Museum to be officially rebuilt in Minecraft

Museums may be stealth game bread and butter - I seem to remember Doing a Mission Impossible over a laser-guarded exhibit at some point during Splinter Cell: Chaos Theory - but they’re usually fictionalised. Perhaps that’s for the sake of level design, or so’s they don’t become thief training simulators. Either way, the officially-sanctioned British Museum in London in Minecraft will be the first of its kind. A blocky national institution built using its original blueprints.

The project is still in its “early planning" stage - and the museum are still recruiting members of the public for the big build. Will it ascend the angular podium of the best Minecraft projects ever?

Scrolls price drops to compete on tablets

Scrolls is getting dressed up ready for release on tablets. Mojang’s CCG’s been on PC for well over a year and, while not being quite as successful as the developers’ other game, it’s formed a devoted following amongst its players.

However, with an impending mobile release Mojang have had to face up to the fact that few tableters/tablists/tablerians are likely to spend $20 on a game.

To that end, Scrolls’ price is being dropped to just $5.

Topic of the Week: What are your fondest memories of Minecraft so far?

Now that Microsoft has purchased Mojang, who knows if the world(s) of Minecraft will ever be the same. Yesterday, I asked a tiny human what he thought of the acquisition. He shrugged and said “I dunno." Our children are now growing up in a world where they just don’t know things, and it’s all Microsoft’s fault.

So let’s live in the past. Let’s remember the good times, our greatest moments in Minecraft. That’s our Topic of the Week: what are your best bits? Maybe it was something you built, or a giant project you undertook with an army of friends. Perhaps it was simply just a fun mining expedition. I don’t know - these are your memories.

Garry Newman on Mojang sale to Microsoft: "I'd have done the same thing"

The world watched as Microsoft bought Mojang for a country-floating $2.5 billion, and so did Garry ‘sMod’ Newman. But while the world at large mostly wailed and muttered dire warnings, the Rust mastermind decided that this is a deal in which “everyone wins".

“Long story short. I’d have done the same thing," he blogged. “The money is enough to very much take care of all the staff. The game is in relatively safe hands. Mojang’s legacy is as a huge success story instead of a one hit wonder.

“Can you seriously say you’d have done it differently?"

Microcraft: Microsoft might be trying to buy Mojang

Minecraft is a phenomenon. Your gran probably runs her own Minecraft server. It’s common knowledge that everyone who works at Mojang is actually made of gold - which means they can’t swim, but it’s a small price to pay. This means one thing: big companies want more than just a piece of it. Big companies like Microsoft.

The Wall Street Journal reports that Microsoft is in talks, serious talks, with Mojang over the acquisition of the Swedish company.

Mojang release 10 months' work in Minecraft 1.8: The Bountiful Update

What have you done in the last 300 days? Probably lots of different little things. The Minecraft dev team at Mojang have done one, big thing: put together the Bountiful Update.

Minecraft 1.8 was published to the Minecraft launcher today. It’s taken longer than any other update in the game’s history, and incorporates a full-scale rebuild of its infrastructure. That’s the equivalent of umpteen creative mode cathedrals.

Mojang postpone Minecon until 2015; still to take place in London

Mojang have announced that there won’t be a Minecon this year as previously planned, instead being moved to “spring" next year where it is still to take place in London. The exact reason for the postponement is unknown, but the Mojang blog post by COO Vu Bui seems to suggest it was a problem to do with the venue.

“We want to make sure we can follow through with the event and we never want people to start planning to attend something that might not happen."

Minecraft Bukkit project lead quits, Mojang take over

The team lead of Minecraft mod Bukkit attempted to shut down the project this morning, over concerns with Mojang’s pay-to-win crackdown and his ability to continue distributing the mod. But within minutes, Mojang had quashed his worries about EULAs and picked up development of Bukkit themselves.

“Warren over at bukkit seems to have forgotten that the project was bought by Mojang over two years ago," tweeted Minecraft lead Jeb, “and isn’t his to discontinue."

Minecraft staffer and original Bukkit lead Dinnerbone will now see the mod through to its 1.8 release.

How a working 1kb hard drive was built in Minecraft

Notch might not have finished his second intended opus, 0x10c, but it was far enough along for us to identify the common threads in his games: home, the frontier, and a love of coding.

Budding computer scientists long ago recognised that last part in Minecraft’s redstone circuits. Here’s their latest achievement: a functional hard drive, built without recourse to Minecraft mods.
