The 30 best Minecraft seeds

Minecraft seeds are the codes that the game uses to generate worlds for you; worlds full of interesting landscapes and hot spots ripe for exploration. Just drop these words or digits into the seed field when creating a world and Minecraft will do all the heavy lifting for you.

Regardless of if you’re a professional miner or someone about to load up their first world, there’s something you can't control in Minecraft: the terrain itself. Whilst your mind may be brimming with possibilities, all too frequently you’ll spawn in a bland, uninspiring world full of flat grassland and the odd chicken. Hardly the canvas for your masterpiece.

Hence this piece.

We present to you here 30 of the very best, most interesting seeds we’ve found.

Minecraft snapshot 14w29b will either improve performance or "crash horribly"

Minecraft snapshot 14w27a introduced bunny rabbits. How do you top that? Well: last week, Mojang tried to compress time and space. But that didn’t work out, so for this week’s snapshot they’ve decided to “try something else and bend space around time".

Released yesterday, snapshot 14w29a infused the game with optimisations designed to tackle render performance. It’s been swiftly followed by 14w29b, which will do “even more" good for performance. Or break the game. That’s what we’re going to find out.

Minecraft is single-handedly saving the children's book market (for now)

Human children increasingly sport square eyes. Researchers paused the annual Minecon stream during a crowd shot and, using a Set Square, found that the majority of faces were offset by eye sockets at perfect 90-degree angles.

Minecraft’s partly to blame for that - children are having more digital fun than ever before. But paradoxically, it’s also Mojang who're giving the children’s print market a much-needed boost.

Minecrafting 153: Elder Guardians attack!

The first new hostile mob in a long time has been added to Minecraft in this week's snapshot, as well as some new blocks that liven up the dead oceans and a massive stack of bugfixes and engine rewrites.

Meanwhile, the community has been its usual active self. We've got a whole range of different house designs for you to take a look at, as well as a semi-automatic TNT cannon and a beautiful custom map called The Shores of Albion. Shall we begin?

Minecrafting: Getting Started with Feed The Beast

Feed the Beast is exactly what it sounds like, provided you’re aware that the beast in question is Mojang’s behemoth Minecraft, and the food that you are piling into it is mods. It’s a launcher that shovels in tweaks, rebuilds, and textures like burly men fuelling the furnaces of a great mechanical monstrosity that bursts and evolves with each additional scoop of coal.

For anyone shy of intermediate Minecraft expertise, it is potentially a little confusing and frightening too. Not only is it a new front end with lots of buttons to deal with, but it also changes the way Minecraft can function in a manner you probably haven’t even considered to fantasise yet. Portal guns, self-automated production lines, alternate dimensions, and beekeeping await you within Feed the Beast. But before all that, you need to get started.

Here's how exploitative Minecraft servers can be

Mojang are in the throes of their most dramatic community fall-out in years, thanks to an update to Minecraft’s EULA. The developers have announced their intention to enforce rules preventing players from making money in Minecraft without their express permission.

While they’ve made exceptions for clear entry fees, donations and aesthetic upgrades, hosts remain worried they’ll have to ditch payment systems that keep their servers - and in some cases, their staff - online.

Minecraft has an incredible online culture of minigames that Mojang ought to do their best to support. Here’s the thing, though: many of its most popular servers are run through by nagging microtransaction systems. More punitive than those found in any commercial game outside the App Store, these systems have taken root in a game adored by children. And Mojang are absolutely right to do something about that.

Here's the stuff you can expect Minecraft servers to charge for beginning August 1

In the last two weeks, an offhand Reddit comment by a Mojangster has escalated into the biggest community kerfuffle Minecraft’s had in years. You can’t make money in Minecraft without Mojang’s express permission, is the gist of the rule that has server hosts up in arms.

Mojang wrote a long clarification before the weekend, in which they expanded the terms of the existing EULA to allow for server monetisation that wasn’t “forced" upon players. But for server hosts who’d been running payment systems in-game for years without restriction, it felt more like a clampdown.

So, more questions from them, and more answers from Mojang - who are determined to see all servers compliant with the rules by August 1.

Minecrafting 152: Burning Flesh

Phew, what a week. The early rumbles over Mojang restricting how server owners can make money have turned into a bit of an earthquake. But now there's some clarity over exactly what you are allowed to do and what you're not.

The rest of the community, however, has been just getting on with being its usual amazing self. This week, we've got a single-player world powered by flesh, a great tutorial on A-frames, some D-Day inspired terrain and an island with a secret. Shall we begin?

Mojang clarify new rules to "prevent Minecraft servers becoming pay-to-win"

Hosts of popular Minecraft servers have been in uproar this past week over a proposed change to the game’s EULA, to the effect that nobody can make money from Minecraft without Mojang’s express permission. Voices in various corners of the community worried aloud that they’d no longer be able to afford to maintain their services, and wasted no time giving Mojang lengthy and colourful explanations of their concerns.

The developers have responded with what was missing: a clear breakdown of what is and isn’t an acceptable way to make money in Minecraft. While stricter measures are to be enforced, they’re not so broad or un-nuanced as first feared.

You're gonna need a bigger boat: Mojang's next mob will leave Minecraft's waters hostile

Come on in, the water’s lovely. For now. At present, Minecraft’s oceans are occupied only by the squid - which look alarmingly toothy, but are significantly less threatening than the possibility of forgetting about your bubble bar and drowning.

That’s to change. The new ranged mob Jeb is working on will kill squid. And it’ll kill players too.

“On hard difficulty a full diamond armor is recommended," he warns.

Minecrafting 151: A Natural Nether

Happy Swedish National Day! Yet more holidays in the land of herring and Minecraft means that there's no snapshot this week again. But instead we have a pre-release of version 1.7.10 of the game client, which has created some controversy over multiplayer servers.

I've also got a stack of amazing community creations to show you, including another entry in Kaephis' fantastic How to Build series, the best nether portal design I've ever seen, and a beautiful Game of Thrones-inspired castle. Let's go!

Minecraft EULA changes incoming; "you cannot make money with Minecraft without our permission" says Erik Broes

In the last day or so, the normally bright skies of Minecraft have been darkened by arguing, fear and talk of the EULA for Minecraft being changed to restrict players and server hosts making money out of the game beyond donations.

Some of the folk behind the private custom servers who sell services and other things like perks are in an uproar, as they say they will be unable to continue maintaining the worlds they’ve created.

What’s changed to cause the debacle? Well, nothing. But change might be coming.

Below you'll find new blocks, building guides, awesome mods, amazing constructions and a weird way to make lettering using anvils. What? You'll find out what. Let's do this.

But you should be excited about what the community's put together this week - a detailed Avatar: The Last Airbender mod, a sepia-tinged texture pack inspired by the American countryside and a weeping creeper fountain. Let's dive right in.

Do you like mesa biomes in Minecraft? I rarely find any. But this week's snapshot has tweaked mesa and desert terrain generation, as well as fixing a stack of bugs and making a few quality of life improvements.

Meanwhile, the community has been hard at work creating beautiful things for you to click on. An adorable village! A slime-piston marble run where you're the marble! A nifty obsidian generator! A replica of the original Pokémon map! The list does not end there, read on for more.

Minecrafting 147: Drop Challenges

A couple of big Minecraft snapshots two weeks in a row means that this week is naturally quieter, with just a few optimisations to the code, and a neat feature for those of you that spend a lot of time in spectator mode.

The Minecraft community, however, has not been resting. This week, we've got stacks of "drop challenges", an easy piston elevator design, a mod that adds a load of new weapons and a beautiful 18th-century city called Strandborg. Let's roll.
