A critical flaw in Minecraft's code meant anybody could crash any server, but now it's fixed

A developer has exposed a vulnerability in Minecraft's code that can crash any server hosting the game.

The easily triggerable exploit, which involves flooding the server with infinitely looping requests for information about a specific inventory slot, brings Minecraft to its digital knees and starves the machines of CPU and memory.

Minecraft is being distributed to every secondary school in Northen Ireland, for free

Kids from all over Northern Ireland today are waking up to some great news: MinecraftEdu, an educationally focused version of Mojang’s block building phenomenon, is being made freely available to every secondary school in the country. The idea is being masterminded by the annual CultureTECH festival, with support and funding by the Department of Culture, Arts and Leisure, as well as Teacher Gaming.

Minecraft name changes will be made possible on February 4

Update: Name changes are now live! Mojang have announced that you can now change your profile name from your account page. Be sure to log out and log back in again to make the change.

Identity is already a flux concept in the most successful indie game ever made thanks to Minecraft skins. You can swap Steve’s face for the anonymity of a creeper cowl at a moment’s notice - and if you think can squeeze your own face into a fistful of pixels, you can go right ahead and draw it.

Minecraft names have been less variable - but they’ll come unstuck with the changing winds next month.

The 40 best Minecraft seeds

Update: We've added ten new seeds to our list, all found in the 1.8 update.

Minecraft seeds are the codes that the game uses to generate worlds for you; worlds full of interesting landscapes and hot spots ripe for exploration. Just drop these words or digits into the seed field when creating a world and Minecraft will do all the heavy lifting for you.

Regardless of if you’re a professional miner or someone about to load up their first world, there’s something you can't control in Minecraft: the terrain itself. Whilst your mind may be brimming with possibilities, all too frequently you’ll spawn in a bland, uninspiring world full of flat grassland and the odd chicken. Hardly the canvas for your masterpiece.

Hence this piece.

We present to you here 40 of the very best, most interesting seeds we’ve found.

Minecraft regularly gets more than 1m players playing concurrently

We knew Minecraft was big. It sold more than 17 million copies and last year Microsoft were pretty keen to spend $2.5 billion to acquire it. Now we’ve an all new reason to drop our collective jaws: Minecraft regularly has more than 1 million players playing at the same time. That’s more than Dota 2, the far and away biggest game on Steam.

Mojang will let you shed your old Minecraft username

Back in 2011 we were very different people, which might be reflected in our choice of Minecraft username. The Occupy movement was in full swing, NASA’s Curiosity rover started its journey to Mars and One Direction’s first album came out - how could we not be affected by these events?

Perhaps, however, you’ve outgrown the username OccupyHarry. These things happen. Unfortunately, you can’t change your Minecraft username. You’re stuck, living in the past. This is set to change, though, as Mojang continues to mold, polish and faff with 1.8.

The Best of Minecraft in 2014

Since its launch in 2009 there hasn’t been a ‘small’ year for Minecraft. But 2014 draws a sharp spike on the activity graphs thanks to its enormity. This year was massive for Mojang and Minecraft: a year of genuine breakthroughs in the public consciousness, a year of protecting players from exploitative servers, and a year of still selling by the millions.

Oh, and the year that Microsoft bought Minecraft for $2.5 billion.

Let's take a second to appreciate that Mojang made an announcement within a text adventure

Understandably, Telltale’s Minecraft: Story Mode grabbed the headlines yesterday - an episodic adventure series nobody can quite yet get their heads around. But we would be remiss not to spend a minute looking at the game Mojang themselves made for the occasion - a novelty text adventure called Info Quest II.

“Mojang will remember that."

Minecraft 1.8.2 pre-released with altered explosion physics and better performance

Minecraft might have changed the face of PC gaming, won over a young generation and encouraged a new mode of pacifistic play, but in places it’s made of the same stuff as all them other games: explosions.

Explosions are the subject of the game’s 1.8.2 pre-release, which was so comprehensively overshadowed by the announcement of Telltale’s Minecraft: Story Mode yesterday.

Minecraft: Story Mode is an episodic adventure series from Telltale Games

Pop over to the Mojang site about now, and you’ll find an affectionate pastiche of Telltale Games’ dialogue-with-a-deadline schtick named Info Quest II. The exposition’s a little rushed, but with good reason: it turns out Mojang are collaborating with Telltale and the Minecraft community to make an episodic adventure series about Notch’s opus.

Mojang announce Scrolls release date and patch tweaks 28 cards

At long last Mojang think Scrolls is ready to step out of beta and into the harsh light of 1.0. They’ve announced Scrolls’ release date is set for 11 December.

The collectible card game’s been in beta for more than a year, originally releasing on 3 June, 2013. Regular patches and updates have tweaked the cards, you can now play drafts against other players, and you can craft shiny cards, too.

There's also been a significant balancing patch which has tweaked the values of 28 cards.
