Former Moscow 5 owner charged in "largest hacking and data breach scheme ever prosecuted in the United States"

For over a decade, Dmitry 'ddd1ms' Smilianets ran Moscow 5, a major force in pro Dota, Counter-Strike and League of Legends. But his extracurricular activities saw him arrested last July in a global operation by the FBI’s cyber-crime unit, and his teams disassembled in the months that followed.

US authorities yesterday revealed that Smilianets is among five Russian and Ukrainian nationals charged with running a sophisticated hacking network. The group stole at least 160 million debit and credit card numbers, and consequently hundreds of millions of dollars.

Tales of the Lane League of Legends playoffs begin today, leading European teams dueling for a trip to Paris semifinals and €15,000A few of Europe’s top League of Legends teams compete for a €15,000 grand prize in the Tales of the Lane tournament, a small tournament funded by audience donations, in addition to support from Riot. It’s attracted a small but impressive group of competitors, six of whom survived today’s pool play to move onto the tomorrow’s playoff.

Today (Sunday) at 7:30 PM GMT / 3:30 Eastern, Curse EU plays mousesports in a best of three, followed by Team ALTERNATE going up against Eclypsia. The winners will move on to face SK Gaming and Moscow Five in the semifinal on Nov. 11. The English language stream is available through O’Gaming TV.

League of Legends Season 2 semifinals recap: Moscow 5 v Taipei Assassins and CLG EU v Azubu FrostThe much-delayed League of Legends Season 2 playoffs concluded last night at LA’s Galen Center, where CLG’s quarterfinal series against World Elite finally reached its end prior to a long semifinal round. With the main stage still under construction behind the casting booth, teams were forced to play from separate backstage locations without a live audience, an arrangement that may have lacked the grandeur of the LA Live outdoor arena, but which at least eliminated any chances for more of the cheating that troubled the playoffs’ earlier matches.

It was an odd night of uneven games and close-fought series, with each of the two semifinal matches going to three games.

As well as telling us about the importance of good e-commentators, they also shared their thoughts on player behaviour, including the recent arrest of the head of Moscow 5 and their attitude to discipline and bans.

Moscow 5 wins League of Legends Intel Extreme Masters at Gamescom

The Intel Extreme Masters took place in Cologne during last week’s Gamescom, with eight teams duking it out to see who’ll take home the big prize and also secure themselves a slot in the grand finals of the League of Legends Season 2 Championships, which have a prize pool of over 2 million dollars. Moscow 5 managed the feat, securing their dominance over the League of Legends competitive scene, and also protecting their IEM title, after winning it in Hanover last year.

The head of Moscow 5, Dmitry Smilyanets, has been arrested by Dutch police, and while the charges being levelled at him haven’t been officially stated, Fontanka, the Russian website that broke the story (and spotted by Kotaku), claims that it was part of a concerted effort by the FBI to crack down on credit card fraud. Moscow 5 are one of the most successful Esports teams out there, with leading competitors in Counter Strike, League of Legends and Dota 2.
