BioWare willing to change Old Republic’s free-to-play option, Preferred players getting four more character slots; “We want you to know that this is an ongoing dialogue.”It’s been months since we first detailed The Old Republic’s free-to-play restrictions. Free access to story content! It seemed glorious, a kind of collective major publisher madness. But post-launch free-to-players are finding that stricture is the operative word, thanks to limited quickbars, character slots and travel options.

Now BioWare say we can change, please please please give us another chance oh my god, what do you want us to do. And actually, they’ve made a pretty good start.

More pleading after the break.

Star Wars: The Old Republic servers now merged

In the run up to become a free to play game, Star Wars: The Old Republic is making sure everything is neat and tidy for the incoming influx of new players by consolidating servers into one high density cluster, in a way that sounds a little like a black hole forming. A black hole of high population MMO fun.

Star Wars: The Old Republic subscribers will get a Party Jawa when it goes free-to-play

Star Wars: The Old Republic subscribers will get a Party Jawa when it goes free-to-playWhen Star Wars: The Old Republic was announced as going Free to Play, Bioware decided that the best thing to do to reward their current subscribers was to let them pick the reward that they’ll get once the changeover happens. And that reward has been decided. It’s a Jawa. Just not your normal Jawa. This Jawa is a cool cat, a fly guy, the heart and soul of fun.

This is a Party Jawa.

Star Wars The Old Republic Free-to-play restrictions detailedStar Wars: The Old Republic is going to become mostly Free to Play this Autumn, following a year of subscriber numbers that clearly weren’t quite what EA was hoping for. We knew that we’d be allowed to level up to 50 without paying anything, but the details of exactly what we get without paying, and what we don’t, has been properly explained on the game’s website.

BioWare reassures SWTOR players over automatic character transfers from underpopulated serversThis is the way the universe ends: not with a bang, but with a short, deliberate snip of the creator’s garden shears. Such is the fate that awaits SWTOR’s underpopulated origin servers during BioWare’s planned server consolidation. In the inevitable panic, the developer has spoken to allay fears about where characters from pruned servers might end up.

Bioware teases SWTOR server consolidation

Comment
Bioware teases SWTOR server consolidationAfter the recent free weekend, EA and Bioware are hopefully celebrating a new influx of players, keeping their servers nice and teeming, and their coffers nice and filled. Still, with a troubled few months, plans are being set in motion to properly reinforce SWTOR’s core servers, while letting the unnecessary peripheral servers fall by the wayside. It sounds drastic, but it could be just the right move to keep the game hale and hearty.

Wargaming CEO takes aim at Star Wars: The Old Republic and subscription MMO's: "It's dying"Surrounded by a hundred or so tanks, and a few dozen of his most Tank-obsessive fans, Victor Kislyi, CEO of Wargaming.net had a few choice words to say about the state of subscription MMOs in an interview with PCGamesN. His thesis: that the business of games is being eaten alive by the free-to-play mode. “Boxed is dying off, and by that I mean consoles too, and subscription," said Victor. “Because what is a subscription but buying a box again?"

The Old Republic now available in Lego form

Comment
The Old Republic now available in Lego formIs it even possible to dislike Lego? Even if a family member had had an unfortunate Lego incident where they’d fallen down the stairs after stepping on a wayward piece, can you really blame the lovely Lego? Surely it’s the fault of whoever so carelessly left it there. The Old Republic is now available in Lego form, and luckily they’re big enough for Uncle Jeremy to see when they’re strewn on the top of the stairs.
