H1Z1 gets an early access release date of January 15th; Smedley admits it's not yet as feature rich as DayZ

H1Z1, SOE’s zombie survival MMO, has just had a release date stuck on it. An early access release date, anyway. There will be two versions, one which has yet to be announced, and a basic early access SKU that will launch on January 15th for $19.99.

“We wanted to set a high bar quality wise for Early Access," CEO John Smedley said on Twitter, just before the announcement. “Happy with where we ended even if it took longer."

Combat has arrived in Landmark; "This update introduces death"

Remember when Landmark was about building extraordinary things? Well there’s a new kid on the block: combat. Now you can hit other people with swords, and fire various projectiles at another persons face. Mind you, it’s all done within the relative safety of an arena, so you don’t have to worry about someone murdering you in your lovely house.

PlanetSide 2 gets its first new aircraft since launch: the Valkyrie

In PlanetSide 2, I fly on instinct. This involves flailing around wildly while yelling “we’re all going to die!" It’s very relaxing. And now the dangerous skies of Auraxis are set to get busier, with the introduction of the first new aircraft to hit the game since launch: the Valkyrie.

Take a gander at the gunship in action, below.

EverQuest Next is looking impressive at SOE Live

SOE’s EverQuest Next presentation was impressive. David Georgeson took to the stage to tell the story of a single character, from character creation to becoming a multi-classed hero in the middle of a gargantuan siege battle.

Along the way, a slew of classes and genuinely fascinating features were spilled, making EQ Next continue to be a very tempting prospect. And the environments - the stage that these new things were being shown off on - was a Dark Elf city created by both players and devs.

Landmark is getting combat, monsters and "consensual" PvP

Building fantasy castles, futuristic bunkers and huge treehouses is a lot of fun - but people do love a good fight. That’s why SOE is revealing combat for Landmark at SOE Live right now.

Expect armour - designed for both fantasy and sci-fi enthusiasts - that’s tailored for different playstyles, dangerous monsters living in the deep and “consensual" PvP.

Earth gets caught between Apokolips and New Genesis in DC Universe Online's Halls of Power DLC

The Jack Kirby-created New Gods have come to DC Universe Online. The residents of Apokolips and New Genesis are looking for a pick me up in the form of power from the relics of ancient deities. And they’ll be fighting each other - along with their hero and villain allies - to get that power, as they are wont to do.

Halls of Power Part I launched today, and you can take a gander at some of the scraps you could get into below.

Mammoth Planetside 2 update to land on Tuesday; new directives system, resource revamp and more

It was only last month that Planetside 2 received a huge update in the way of the Hossin continent, but that won’t stop Sony Online Entertainment from bringing us another. This coming Tuesday will see the deployment of a huge patch that will bring in new features and improvements, such as the Directive system and resource revamp.

Start building early: Landmark is on sale for the next day

If you fancy putting your creative prowess to use, then Landmark might be your cup of voxel tea. It’s not finished yet, but it’s still floating about in Early Access, so you can buy your way in early. The cheapest pack, the Settler Pack, would normally set you back £14.99/$19.99, which is a little pricey for a game that will be free at launch. You get early access, a title and a pickaxe for your cash.

If it’s the price that’s been keeping you away, then you might be a bit more interested now. All packs are 66 percent off for the next day, which is quite the discount. We got Mr. Cobbet to check it out back in March, so take a gander at his Landmark closed beta review to see if it tickles your fancy.

Wind of Change: SOE adding weather to H1Z1 and PlanetSide 2

Auraxis, the location of PlanetSide 2’s global war, is a large, diverse globe - expanding still with the introduction of a new continent, Hossin. But it’s one where the weather never changes, unless you count drop pods raining down from above as a weather phenomenon.

Weather effects have been teased by SOE since before launch, and it’s one of the things the team’s been wanting to add for a long time. Amid all the new content, it’s still not been forgotten, as CEO John Smedley revealed on Twitter earlier this evening.

Hit it: PlanetSide 2 hit detection problems encountered, fixed

You’ve got a sneaky Vanu soldier in your sights, and she hasn’t spotted you. You take a deep breath, look on either side of the ridge you’re perched on - just to make sure you’re alone - and then you fire, right at the Vanu’s skull. Nothing happens. She scarpers, and you’re left without a kill.

If this has happened to you, then you might have been a victim of dodgy hit detection. SOE’s John Smedley explained, on Reddit, that it may have affected up to 20 percent of players at one point or another. A fix is up on the public test server at the moment.

Landmark's Player Studio: "Players are better with our tools than we’ll ever be"

Player Studio just makes sense in Landmark. A game about creation and sharing is the perfect place for a marketplace for user-created items. And it’s integral to SOE’s free-to-play model, their take on which is one of the best in the business, never punishing players who don’t want to spend a penny, but offering them plenty of incentives to part with cash.

We had a chat with Landmark designer David Georgeson about the anticipated impact of Player Studio, and how it - along with player feedback and experimentation - has informed Landmark’s development timeline.

H1Z1: a sandbox where you can build a fortress and then set fire to brawling wolves and zombies

In the bowels of E3, we’re at the mercy of zombies. Not sleep-deprived, hungover journalists, but the rotting, walking cadavers that populate SOE’s new post-apocalyptic survival MMO, H1Z1.

It’s a single server, no resets and 64 square kilometres (at the moment) of forests, deserts, towns and zombies. And at first, it sounds a lot like DayZ. That was always going to be the hurdle for SOE, that immediate comparison that everyone leaps to.

But this isn’t DayZ, and ex-Counter Strike pro, now H1Z1 senior designer, Jimmy Whisenhunt offers plenty of reasons why the two games are different and can co-exist.

H1Z1 trailer asks what your evil ways will be

When the apocalypse hits, what manner of evil will you commit to survive? That’s the question at the heart of this splattery-good trailer for Sony’s open-world zombie MMO H1Z1. Alongside such questions comes footage of skidding automobiles, grand fortresses, and many, many dead people.

H1Z1 will be a massive sandbox, where you can farm, build a town or drive around hunting zombies

H1Z1, SOE’s post-apocalyptic MMO, was unofficially revealed yesterday when details emerged from the Game Talk Live podcast before it aired. What we knew was vague, though - there’d be forts, PvP, zombies and burning stuff down.

Now that the cat’s out of the bag, SOE head honcho John Smedley has taken to Reddit, providing a plethora of details about the upcoming MMO. It’s now sounding like less of a zombie MMO, and more of a humongous multiplayer survival game that just happens to also have zombies. Like DayZ, admittedly, but perhaps more ambitious.

H1Z1 is a post-apocalyptic MMO from SOE where you can burn everything down

Sony Online Entertainment’s newest title, H1Z1, is a post-apocalyptic MMO that’s lousy with the walking dead. SOE president John Smedley made the reveal on the Game Talk Live podcast, which goes live later today.

"H1Z1 is an MMO that allows players to take on the role of an apocalypse survivor who is in a world that is filled with zombies," Smedley said on the podcast. "A world! Not just a little tiny server."

Why every PC gamer should try Planetside 2

Why every PC gamer should try Planetside 2

Planetside 2 is like one big Michael Bay movie; a massively multiplayer first person shooter with explosions as far as the eye can see. It’s a brilliant mix of troop combat, vehicle warfare, and ridiculous aerial assaults. Sometimes you need to take a step back from the front lines and admire the carnage. Thank Auraxis, then, for YouTube.

Here’s what we think are the best videos to demonstrate why Planetside 2 is just so exciting. There’s glory, failure, rage, and bombers falling out fo the sky. And don’t forget: you can join in the action. Planetside 2 is free to join, and free to play. There's no reason not to try it.

Planetside 2 roadmap shows plans for the next six months of development

Planetside 2 roadmap shows plans for the next six months of developmentThe teething problems of an MMO can be many. The teething problems of a free-to-play MMO can often go unforgiven by its fledgling community, and once they’re gone it can be awhile till they come back, if ever. When the free-to-play MMO is Planetside 2, unique on the PC in its many-playered first-person shooteridge, all these problems are compounded.

SOE’s recently introduced roadmap should do wonders then to show which game problems the developer is aware of and in what order they plan on addressing them. Similarly it’s reassuring to see some of the new features we can look forward to.
