Uncharted director Amy Hennig joins Visceral to make a Star Wars game

When Drake-wrangler Amy Hennig left Naughty Dog in early March, her destination was undecided. It seems reasonable to assume that countless top developers courted her in the following weeks, but something drew her to Dead Space types Visceral - and not just her former working relationship with VP Steve Papoutsis. Can you guess what it was?

“We happen to be making a Star Wars game," said Papoutsis.

EA’s plan for Star Wars: CEO wants Arkham-style "deep, immersive storylines", not film tie-ins

Andrew Wilson likes Arkham Asylum! And we thought he was only into sports games and the Democracy 3 clone that is high-level management.

The EA CEO would like to replicate Warner Bros. and Rocksteady’s success with the Arkham series, if possible: greenlighting games which stand apart from the films but thread themselves nicely into the extended universe.

Star Wars: Attack Squadrons is a free-to-play space combat title

Sometimes, after I've fallen asleep, I wake up in a world where there's a new X-Wing vs. TIE Fighter and a new Rogue Squadron, but it's all a dream, cruelly mocking me. But my dreams of Star Wars dogfighting might not be too far from becoming a reality, with The Old Republic getting a space combat expansion, and now this: Star Wars: Attack Squadrons.

Details are vague, but what we do know is that it's being developed by Area 52, a new studio comprised of "industry veterans", according to their website, and the game will be a free-to-play space combat game featuring dogfights between 16 players. I'm already preparing by making the Kessel Run in less than 12 parsecs.

VR2D2: Death Star trench run adapted for Oculus Rift

It’s a match made in ObviousLand. Since steadfastly refusing to play Flight Simulator in the proper manner throughout the ‘90s, PC gamers have insisted on flying a bit too close to static objects in search of thrills and, inevitably, balls of flame. Star Wars’ Death Star trench run scene is the optimal cinematic equivalent, and it's happily been recreated for the Oculus Rift.

Star Wars Battlefront "probably" out in summer 2015

One of the surprise announcements coming out of E3 was that DICE was working on a new Battlefront game, continuing a series that had all but died as a large scale multiplayer FPS in 2005 with the excellent Battlefront II. All we were given by DICE was a trailer that mostly featured snow and the large foot of an AT-AT. There was barely any information, and certainly no release date.

But now, coming out of a stockholder's meeting, IGN reports that EA's CFO Blake Jorgensen has said that the next installment in the Battlefront series will "most likely come out around the same time that the Star Wars movies start to come out, probably in the summer of '15."

You can fly a Millennium Falcon in Outerra, the powerful Earth simulation engine

Outerra is a planet simulator. But it’s not just simulating any old planet, god no, it’s simulating our planet, the one we’re on right now! That’s a brave choice. Considering all of the planets that they could’ve chosen to simulate, they chose the one that could be held to the highest degree of scrutiny. You need only look out of your own window and spot one errantly simulated mountain to prove Outerra wrong, but you can’t, because Outerra is never wrong*.

The engine uses elevation data from satellites to render with incredible precision the valleys and plains and coastlines of our dear Earth what we live on. It’s also got aeroplane and flight physics built in, which means, thanks to modders, you can pilot a Millennium Falcon over the Alps and zip along the Pennines on a speeder bike.

*Often wrong.

Hey EA: if you're out of ideas for Star Wars games, here are five we think might be okay

Hey EA: if you're out of ideas for Star Wars games, here are five we think might be okay

Today we learned EA has bought the rights to a franchise truly near and truly dear to hearts of our team. There’s nervous excitement coming from Tim’s desk that DICE may be at the helm of a new Battlefront, Jeremy’s found it difficult to talk about anything other than Knights of the Old Republic 3, and Steve wants Visceral to announce a new Simpsons game.

But those are the obvious games for EA to be working on. These are the ones they should be drafting in their other studios to helm.

EA pick up exclusive Star Wars license, set DICE to work

The future of Star Wars’ long and occasionally fruitful flirtation with our fair medium has been uncertain since LucasArts vanished in a puff of financial logic just over a month ago. Not so now. EA have inked a deal which gives them exclusive license to publish and develop “core" Star Wars games, and have handed the keys to three of their favourite children: DICE, Visceral, and BioWare.

Obsidian are lobbying Disney with one of their “top three pitches ever”: a new Star Wars game set during the filmsPicture the scene. Chris Avellone sits in an office peppered with South Park memorabilia. There’s a rat-a-tat-tat at his door. It’s studio head Feargus Urquhart, wielding an edict for a new Star Wars game. Chris - who’d rather elope with an Ewok than watch the films again - sighs, deeply, lengthily. And then he gets to work on a script that quietly but fundamentally subverts Lucas’ spiritual parable, and emerges with the best Star Wars game in an age. Again.

That, to hear Urquhart tell it, is exactly what’s happened. If only Obsidian can get Disney to light the green paper in their arcane and unknowable publishing ritual.

Rise of the Hutt Cartel trailer shows off Makeb, suggests discordPlayers of Star Wars: The Old Republic may have sensed a disturbance in the Force. It was the arrival of this YouTube trailer, their first chance to scope out Makeb, the new planet added by the Rise of the Hutt Cartel expansion. From this footage, the scenery looks pretty damn impressive and we get to see bustling cities, a gorgeous waterfall, what looks like a parched canyon and a giant floating barge.

Star Wars: The Old Republic servers now merged

In the run up to become a free to play game, Star Wars: The Old Republic is making sure everything is neat and tidy for the incoming influx of new players by consolidating servers into one high density cluster, in a way that sounds a little like a black hole forming. A black hole of high population MMO fun.

Star Wars 1313 trailer enters Uncharted depths

There's definitely a rather different, distinctly un-Star Wars vibe to LucasArts' latest. While the flashy cinematics are exactly what we'd expect from a space opera, the dialogue hints at a much grittier experience. "It gets a lot dirtier where we're headed," murmurs one character, and we bet he's talking as much about morality as mud. As a spaceship uses an access shaft to slip below the surface of Coruscant, is it also sinking into the criminal underworld of the Star Wars universe?

Star Wars The Old Republic Free-to-play restrictions detailedStar Wars: The Old Republic is going to become mostly Free to Play this Autumn, following a year of subscriber numbers that clearly weren’t quite what EA was hoping for. We knew that we’d be allowed to level up to 50 without paying anything, but the details of exactly what we get without paying, and what we don’t, has been properly explained on the game’s website.

BioWare reassures SWTOR players over automatic character transfers from underpopulated serversThis is the way the universe ends: not with a bang, but with a short, deliberate snip of the creator’s garden shears. Such is the fate that awaits SWTOR’s underpopulated origin servers during BioWare’s planned server consolidation. In the inevitable panic, the developer has spoken to allay fears about where characters from pruned servers might end up.

Bioware teases SWTOR server consolidation

Comment
Bioware teases SWTOR server consolidationAfter the recent free weekend, EA and Bioware are hopefully celebrating a new influx of players, keeping their servers nice and teeming, and their coffers nice and filled. Still, with a troubled few months, plans are being set in motion to properly reinforce SWTOR’s core servers, while letting the unnecessary peripheral servers fall by the wayside. It sounds drastic, but it could be just the right move to keep the game hale and hearty.

The Old Republic now available in Lego formIs it even possible to dislike Lego? Even if a family member had had an unfortunate Lego incident where they’d fallen down the stairs after stepping on a wayward piece, can you really blame the lovely Lego? Surely it’s the fault of whoever so carelessly left it there. The Old Republic is now available in Lego form, and luckily they’re big enough for Uncle Jeremy to see when they’re strewn on the top of the stairs.
