Dying Light players will get super powers for one day only

Super heroes are lucky, one small plunge into nuclear waste and they get super powers for life. Normal people are lucky to walk away with debilitating tumours. Techland’s tired of seeing poor regular Joe and Joe-ettes like us living our daily lives without super powers and so, for one day only, everyone in Dying Light is getting super strength.

And it’s all thanks to a bad batch of antivirals.

Dying Light developer tools are on their way, starting with a closed beta

Dying Light got off to a rough start when it came to mods, with an early patch breaking the community’s first efforts. But after that slip up, Techland got back up and promised extensive modding tools. The studio also asked players for mod ideas, “no matter how crazy".

Those modding tools are coming “soon", even sooner for those that get into the beta.

Dying Light's Super Aggressive Zombies mod gives the undead a great sense of smell

You’ve probably been playing Dying Light and thinking “Gee, I wish these murderous, flesh-eating, monsters could smell me from a mile off." You’re in luck, reader. Modder KNG has made a Super Aggressive Zombies mod for Techland’s zombie game.

SAZ makes Dying Light’s zombies even more viscous, giving them a greater sense range and shorter temper.

Updated: Dying Light patch fixes bugs but breaks mods

Dying Light’s day one patch fixes a load of crash issues, optimises the game to run that little bit faster, it’s also breaks the community’s mods.

The key line in the patch notes is “blocked cheating by changing game’s data files." “Cheating" applies to mods that remove the film grain filter that overlays every frame of the game.

The film grain mod’s been pulled from one site after it received a DMCA takedown notice from the ESA (Entertainment Software Association).

Dying Light PC review

Dying Light PC review

From where I’m perched, Harran looks desolate. Plumes of smoke pour out of buildings, and roads are dotted with cars ablaze. But other than the few infernos and the billowing palm leaves, it looks almost peaceful. Clambering down the the Tower of Babel-sized radio tower, the real Harran starts to reveal itself; the zombie-infested city that serves as Dying Light’s blood-drenched stage.

That’s the problem with being above it all - I start to feel safe. But the moment I hit street level, that changes. Falling out of windows, crawling on top of cars, smashing against fences, zombies fill every nook and cranny of the Turkish city. So I swifty ascend again, Spider-man without the jokes, and I stare out across the roofs. These are the real streets of Harran, the rooftops and balconies, and I sit there and plan. I have to, because the hell below is bubbling with danger.

Dying Light first impressions

Hello! This isn’t a review. Sorry! As you might already know, press weren’t given review codes for Techland’s zombie parkour romp, Dying Light, until yesterday, and a day is not long enough to digest this rather large game.

I’ve taken a break from caving in zombie skulls with rusty pipes and leaping across buildings like an urban ninja to share my early impressions, though. After this, it’s back to the slums of Harran with me.

Dying Light’s ‘Be The Zombie’ mode is no longer a pre-order exclusive

Dying Light releases on PC on January 27th, and on that date there will be a small change to your previously scheduled launch. Where once the game’s asynchronous ‘Be the Zombie’ multiplayer mode was a pre-order bonus reserved only for those with enough interest to buy the game before release, it’s now available to one and all, no matter when you slap down the cash.

Dying Light physical release to be delayed outside of the US; digital release remains unaffected

Techland’s zombie parkour game, Dying Light, will see a short delay in offering physical copies of the game to regions outside of the United States. The delay will affect the physical console and PC versions of the game, which won't make it in time for the January 27th release date. The digital release however will remain on schedule.

Ampisound's live-action Dying Light parkour video will make you dizzy

Techland’s parkour and zombie game, Dying Light, is due out at the end of the month, so it’s time to start asking the question, how helpful is parkour when attempting to avoid zombie-related death?

Conveniently, Ampisound, the folks that created the excellent Mirror’s Edge parkour POV video, took advantage of a recent zombie outbreak in Cambridge, and you can see that it’s an effective way to avoid being eaten by the undead for at least a wee while.

Dying Light intro cinematic explains what's up with zombie-infested Harran

Techland’s Dying Light isn’t due out until next month, but don’t let that stop you from watching the intro cinematic in an effort to trick your brain into thinking you’re just about to play it. Though I would suggest being nicer to your brain, it’s the only one you’ve got, and nobody likes to be tricked.

Dying Light’s intro paints the scene with an exciting… news report. It’s unusual that so many zombie games still use news reports for exposition, when clearly Twitter will be the first place people look when the dead rise from their graves. Anyway, direct your eyes below for the trailer.

Dying Light system requirements, now with less crazy

Techland has released the system requirements for the free-running, zombie-slaying action romp, Dying Light. These system requirements are actually the second batch. The first demanded 16GB of RAM in the recommended list, and a GTX670 as a minimum GPU. Thankfully, this seems to have been a mistake, and the list has been updated with more reasonable requirements.

Have a look at them below.

Techland have Dying Light prepared for Oculus Rift’s release: “If they’re ready, we’re ready”

VR is the biggest thing in PC gaming right now, and developer Techland knows it. Showing us their zombie survival game Dying Light, the star of the show was the Oculus Rift. A virtual reality version of their dead city is they’ve been working hard with, battling against framerates and dual-image rendering, but they think they’ve cracked it.

“You can already plug in Oculus and play and it’s pretty good," explains the game’s lead designer Maciej Binkowski. “We’re definitely going to support Dying Light when it releases."

Watch skeletons being victimised in Hellraid's first 20 minutes

Techland really know how to make first-person melee incredibly satisfying. Dead Island - for all its flaws, like the awful quests and boring narrative - held my attention for as long as it did because flailing around, dismembering zombies was just so much damn fun.

The studio’s fantasy first-person hack and slash romp, Hellraid, looks to be continuing this tradition. Indeed, it’s particularly evocative of Dark Messiah of Might & Magic, which I ended up devouring after I grew tired of Oblivion’s rubbish combat back in 2006.

Some of the devs played through the first 20 minutes on Twitch a wee while ago, and you can watch the whole, violent affair below.

Dying Light trailer demonstrates how to kill zombies like it's night and day

A new Dying Light trailer that’s bound for this year’s Gamescom has surfaced, showing just exactly what we can expect from the parkour zombie survival game. You’ll be punching, jumping on, slicing and blowing up zombies left and right with various weapons and scenery. And you can share the fun in four player co-op; it’s all quite fun and carefree by the looks of it.

But when the sun sets, you’ll become the hunted.

Techland's Hellraid has been given a glossy new coat of blood

Hellraid is Dead Island developer Techland’s gorey first-person hack and slash RPG, and we’ve not heard much about it for a while. That’s because Techland have been presumably rather busy making significant changes.

So it’s being re-announced: a new Hellraid, not the old Hellraid. That means a new engine, new combat systems both for melee and magic, and a crafting system.
