The Weekly Playlist: the one where Tim plays a console game *spit* and Rob plays nothing at allWe're always courting controversy here at PCGamesN. Tim once had five Aspirin in a day when the box said four was the limit; and, Paul: Paul thinks manhole covers keep the ocean from pouring forth in geysers; Jeremy's mostly normal, though I've not known him to make it all the way through a shift sober. But, until now, our weekly playlist hasn't reflected this dangerously counter-cultural streak: this week Tim's been playing Halo 4 *spit* and Rob's played thing. Nothing.

Creative Assembly’s Total War Battles team will make Netbook, laptop and Microsoft Surface-suitable games; iPhone merely “a good first target”Total War Battles: Shogun had barely managed to spread its scent around the App Store before it started rubbing itself against Steam. “iPhone port!", we squealed, before having our mouths forcibly shut by its undeniable quality. Shogun is the first shot fired by a team at Creative Assembly put together to work on “mid-core" games - not casual fare, but deep strategy to be played on lesser-powered devices, including wee PCs like tablets and laptops.

"The plan was to address the entire digital space, and you obviously have to start somewhere," said Total War Battles lead designer Renaud Charpentier. "Smartphones are just the harder thing to do, so it was a good first target, but our plan for what to do next was really to become a digital team that will address all the devices and stores that you have access to."

Creative Assembly lead designer says “60 to 70 percent [of games] are not good enough”, need to forefront design over tech"When you look at the market, probably 20 to 30 per cent of the games are confident, and maybe 60 to 70 per cent are not good enough," Total War Battles: Shogun lead designer Renaud Charpentier told Edge.

"Usually, they run. Most of them don't crash - most are competent technically. Most of them look okay or even good, but they play like shit."

Total War Battles: Shogun arrives on Steam

Comment
Total War Battles: Shogun arrives on SteamA new Total War game just launched on Steam, though there's a small chance you've never heard of it. It's called Total War Battles: Shogun, a port (well, a "re-imagining" say Creative Assembly, we'll give them that) of an iPhone telephone videogame. That's 'Total War Battles', which you might view with as much suspicion as 'Saved By The Bell The New Class' - but you'd be wrong. Total War Battles looks great, like what might happen if Popcap reversed into a Total War game and both parties apologised and then started just making out on the bonnet.
